Third Sunday of Easter We are an Easter people so we are a joyful people. Jesus has conquered death, broken open our tombs of sin and despair, and redeemed us in our humanity. Animated by the Holy Spirit, we live in the light and life of Christ, spreading that light and life on those around us. Let our hearts be glad and tongues exult as we lift our voices in praise to God.

First Reading (Acts 2:14.22-28). On the feast of Pentecost, Peter preaches to the Jews about the resurrection of Jesus. Second Reading (1 Pet 1:17-21). The benefits we enjoy as Christians were won by Christ through the shedding of his blood. Our response should be a life of holiness. Gospel (Lk 24:13-35). The risen Jesus joins two of his disciples on their journey, and shows them that it was by dying that he entered into glory.

Scripture Note The Gospel reading we hear today is a familiar one. A pair of disciples encounter the risen Lord on the road to Emmaus. Despite Jesus walking right alongside them for miles, they fail to recognize him, distracted as they are by the events of the past three days. As we listen to Peter’s and Luke’s accounts of events that took place shortly after the Resurrection, let us recognize our Lord in his word.

Readings for the Week of April 27-May 3 Monday: Acts 6:8-15; Ps 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30; Jn 6:22-29 Tuesday: Acts 7:51 — 8:1a; Ps 31:3cd-4, 6, 7b, 8a, 17, 21ab; Jn 6:30-35 Wednesday: Acts 8:1b-8; Ps 66:1-3a, 4-5, 6-7a; Jn 6:35-40 Thursday: Acts 8:26-40; Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20; Jn 6:44-51 Friday: Acts 9:1-20; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 6:52-59 Saturday: Acts 9:31-42; Ps 116:12-13, 14-15, 16-17; Jn 6:60-69 Sunday: Acts 2:14a, 36-41; Ps 23: 1-3a, 3b4, 5, 6; 1 Pt 2:20b-25; Jn 10:1-10

Celebration of the Sacraments

“The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify men, to build up the Body of Christ and, finally, to give worship to God. Because they are signs, they also instruct. They not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects they also nourish, strengthen and express it. That is why they are called ‘sacraments of faith’.”

— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1123
