President’s Message
Dear Members, Please join me in welcoming the 114 new members we swore in during the “Membership Mania“ weekend the first weekend in January! This event was a huge success! As usual we sold out of our famous corned beef sandwiches and our kitchen staff did an amazing job of keeping up with the demand! Many thanks to our Offic-ers, Directors and volunteers who helped all weekend to ensure the success of this event and especially to our membership team who did a fabulous job! Speaking of events, we are approaching our “high holidays” in March ...St. Patrick’s Day and our beloved St. Patrick’s Day Parade! The club holds its annual corn beef & cabbage dinner in March as well, and these are three huge events for us. We draw many members and guests for these events and require lots of manpower to run all these events. We run the kitchens on both Parade Day and St. Patrick’s Day. We are looking for help with set up and clean up for these events, as well as manning the kitchens. Information regarding these volun-teer opportunities are contained within this newsletter. We hope you’ll come out and support these events and lend a hand in making these events a huge success!
All the best, Elizabeth O’Leary President
Irish American Home Society Inc.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) The club now has an AED mounted on the wall near the front door. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm & can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. Anyone can use the AED in a cardiac emergency. It will talk you through what you need to do and will not work if you have connected the device to the person incorrectly. Please take notice of the location so that we are all prepared in case of an emergency.

New Member Screening Due to overwhelming response and feedback during our Membership Mania weekend, we are changing our new members screening and swearing in pro-cess. Beginning in April 2018, we will now screen potential new members and swear in new members all on the same night. Board Members will be availa-ble for screening beginning at 6:00 pm on meeting nights (the 2nd Friday of each month) and new members will be sworn in that same night during the meeting as usual. HELP WANTED! The club is looking for bartenders to supplement the existing bar staff. Experience preferred, but will train. People with flexible schedules and availability during the day for short notice rentals are strongly encour-aged to apply. Contact President Elizabeth O’Leary at [email protected]
IRISH LANGUAGE CLASSES
Irish Language Classes will be starting back up at the Club
in September. There is room in the Intermediate Class for
anyone who has previously studied the Irish language. We
will also be offering a beginners class for anyone with little
or no previous experience with the Irish language. If you
are interested, please contact Johanna Mackey at: Johan-
[email protected] or (860) 982.1959
IRISH SET DANCE CLASSES
Traditional Irish country set dancing classes are held on
Wednesday evenings (except the fourth Wednesday of the
month). This is a cultural function of the Irish American
Hone Society and there is no charge. The only require-
ments are hard-soled shoes and a little stamina. Classes
begin at 7:00 p.m. For more information, please call John
Droney at (860)521-2696.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians Division #2 and Ladies
AOH meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30

lic organization that promotes and encourages participation
in our religion, charity and Irish culture, following the motto,

mation contact Jamie Forzono at (860)604-3021.
Memorial Funds
Please consider naming one of two funds the IAHS has
established over the years to receive memorial donations
upon your death. Both funds are intended to memorialize
our deceased loved ones while benefiting our members .
The first is our Scholarship Fund which was established to
grant educational scholarships to the children of members
in good standing. Scholarships are awarded in June of
each year. The second fund is our Building Renovation
Fund, established to help fund the proposed new building
and renovation of the existing building.
Newsletter deadline is the 15th of the month for inclusion in
the next month’s edition. Send contributions, in WORD
FORMAT, to [email protected].
WEEKLY CARD GAME
Enjoy playing cards? Every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in
the downstairs lounge, members and guests are invited to
join in a friendly game of Setback.
WINTER STORM CLOSING
INFORMATION
The winter season is upon us and with that brings the
eventuality of ice, snow and wintry mix. The Irish Ameri-
can Home Society will do its best to remain open during
inclement weather but will close if conditions warrant.
Closing information may be found on our website and
the following TV stations: WFSB Channel 3, WVIT
Channel 30 and Fox 61. We ask that you refrain from
parking in our lot during snow storms so that snow re-
moval may be done as quickly and completely as possi-
ble. If we need a plow to return to re-plow where a car
sat during a storm, we pay additional snow removal
costs. Thank you!!
SIGN IN YOUR GUESTS!
PROTECT YOUR CLUB!
State liquor control laws mandate that private clubs
maintain a guest book where non-member guests are
required to register and be signed in by the member.
Please ensure that your guests are properly signed
in…help protect your club! Failure to comply with the
liquor laws may result in fines or other penalties such as
closure of our pub for a period determined by the Liquor
Control Commission. Please remember that you are
responsible for the conduct of your guests and they
must depart the premises when you depart…no excep-
tions. This is your club…protect it at all times! Thank
you for your cooperation.
Seisiun Every 1st and 3rd Sundays
Live traditional Irish music continues on the first and
third Sundays of each month at the Irish American
Home Society, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Come join
the singers and musicians at this open seisiun. Listen
or play along with the lively jigs and reels…sing a song
if you are so inclined…or simply relax and enjoy the
music of Ireland. A slow music seisiun is held on the
third Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is an
opportunity to learn Irish music. For more information,
contact Liz Raymond (860)346-3235.
IRISH NORTHERN AID

Friday of every month at 8:00 p.m. in the Upstairs Hall
of the Irish American Home. Since 1970, the Irish
Northern Aid Committee has been at the forefront in
support of the struggle for freedom, justice, and self-
determination for all the people of Ireland. For more
information, please contact Tom McBride (860)983-

HONOR GUARD
It is this Society’s tradition to honor our de-
ceased members by the presence of an Honor Guard at
the funeral service and interment. While we have sever-
al dedicated members who faithfully participate in this
tradition, we would like to ensure a full complement at
each service. If you are interested in participating when
the need arises, please contact Charlie Murray at
(860)633-0663 or Kathleen Blake (860)633-0587. The
Honor Guard will participate in the funeral services
for all members when the member has previously
requested or the family requests our services. If
you would like to have an Honor Guard at a mem-
ber’s funeral, please call Charlie or Kathleen to ad-
vise them of the arrangements.
