IRISH PAINTERS IN PARIS, 1868-1914

Julian Campbell examines the registers of the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Acade'mie Julian for the names of Irish students.

A mong the thousands of foreign students to study in Paris in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many were

Irish. Only a handful of Irish pupils studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, but dozens passed through the studios of Julian, which wel comed both foreigners and women students alike. The teaching at both institutions was highly academic, and some of the professors at the Ecole also taught at Julian's. The existence of the registers of the Ecole and the recent discovery of many of the registers of Julian's, has facilitated a much more precise study of the Irish pupils at these institutions. In both cases, I am grateful to publica tions by American scholars: H Barbara Weinburg, American Students of Jean-Leon Gerome, Fort Worth, 1984; and Catherine Fehrer, The Julian Academny, Paris 1868-1939, Shepherd Gallery, New York 1989, for drawing my attention to the presence of these registers, in the Archives Nationales de France, Paris.'

The following lists include the names of both well-known and lesser-known Irish students, as well as some completely forgot ten figures. It is significant that amongst the earliest students at

Julian's was a large contingent of women artists. The fact that many went on to gain successes at the Paris Salon is testament to the quality of the teaching they received. The presence of

George Moore's name amongst hundreds of French students, in Cabanel's atelier at the Ecole, was an exciting surprise, as was the opportunity to pinpoint the movements of elusive artists such as William Gerard Barry at Julian's. The registers also pro vide valuable information about the artists' date or place of birth, address in Paris, and so on. According to Dr Fehrer, regis ters of the women's ateliers at Julian's have recently been re-discovered.2 So further research into these Irish students undoubtedly remains to be done.
