“Every haulier is in the same boat andeveryone is looking to make cuts. Wehave installed a GPS tracking systemon our fleet and this ensures that all

Hearty Distribution wasestablished in 2005

The hassle and strain of ensuring that goods arrived attheir port of call can be a lot to handle for somecustomers, but there are expert firms that can be

called up to take away all that worry in the freight forwardingsector.

One such business is Hearty Distribution, which over the last

seven years since it was established in 2005 has built up ahuge customer base having provided an efficient and reliableservice since its genesis.

Headquartered in Dundalk, Co Louth, the company actuallyoperates from the The Pallet Network premises in BallycoolinIndustrial Estate, Blanchardstown, Dublin. For this month's

Page 8: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

edition of Irish Trucker, we profile this burgeoningcompany and speak to operations manager Colm Heartyabout the success of the business.

Hearty Distribution is a family run business, with Colmas operations director and transport manager, while hiswife Melanie manages the administration, accounts, payroll and personnel side of the business.

Today, the company still supplies haulage services tothe newspaper industry, but its main business today ismoving pallets for a variety of industry sectors, includingconstruction, hardware, animal feeds and evenhazardous materials, for which they are certified for by theDepartment of Transport.

Hearty Distribution does 'what it says on the tin' and thatis the distribution of goods for the clients in Ireland andthe U.K. The company is also a member The PalletNetwork (TPN), which allows them to work on a broaderscale within the industry.

“We concentrate on palletised freight; distributing itthroughout Ireland and the U.K. Our fleet consists of twoartics, three rigids and two vans,” said Colm.

“I use to be delivering papers before we diversified intofreight and we haven't looked back since. The businesshas grown on an annual basis and we're confident thattrend will continue for some time to come.”

Colm feels that a decision made in 2008 turned out to bea huge boost for the business. “Four years ago, webecame members of TPN and to be honest only for it, I'mnot sure where we would be today.

“No matter where we distribute a load, we will alwayshave backloads and we are now the main agents for theLouth, South Dublin and north Wicklow areas. We workhand in hand with other companies in the industry and ithas proven top be very successful.

The Pallet Network is the number one freight distributionservice for palletised goods in Ireland with a network of 23regional hauliers, their Pallet Network Members.

TPN deliver and collectpallets and carton freightin every County in Irelandon an overnight deliveryservice. With a uniqueintegrated link to ThePallet Network UK, theyoffer a premium 48 hourexport and import deliveryservice to and from theUK.

Their members areexperienced local freightcompanies who not onlydeliver but also providetheir own national andinternational servicethrough The PalletNetwork. There is nobetter choice to transportfreight in Ireland.

“We also continue todistribute papers on abulk basis to the retailers. There are a number ofservices that we provideand these include same

next stage.Draft Compulsory

Purchase Order /Environmental ImpactS t a t e m e n tdocumentation is inplace for the CorkNorthern Ring Roadscheme. However, thisscheme is also currentlysuspended.

Regarding theCarrigtwohill – Midletonscheme, DraftCompulsory PurchaseOrder / EnvironmentalImpact Statement arealso completed - but thescheme is also currentlysuspended.

An ongoingprogramme of bridgemanagement and roadsafety schemes is alsobeing implemented.During 2011, substantialprogress was made inthis regard.

Quality pavement and minorimprovement works is another areabeing addressed. Understandably, inthe current financial climate, there is agreater emphasis on overlay and minorimprovement works as opposed tomajor schemes.

The National Roads office hasrecognised this and has endeavouredto maximise the receipt of availablefunding from the National RoadsAuthority. The allocation received at thebeginning of 2011 for pavement andminor works as part of the overallallocation was €13.55 million.

However, by virtue of acoordinated effort by allconcerned the outturn receivedin 2011 for pavement and minorworks was €28.5 million, whichhugely benefited the NationalNetwork in the county.

In late April, a significantmilestone was reached on thenew N25 Bandon / Sarsfieldsinterchange when a section ofthe new road adjacent to theDunnes Stores shopping centrewas opened to traffic.Significant works also tookplace over May Bank Holidayweekend, including theinstallation of a new 2.1 metrediameter concrete pipe under

the existing road near the SarsfieldsRoad roundabout and theimplementation of new traffic lanesnear the Bandon Road Roundabout.

Two new road sections were alsoopened over the following weeks, allowing construction of the new bridgestructure at the eastern side of theBandon Road Roundabout tocommence.

While all these construction works (aswell as associated works such as thesign refurbishment contract) have beentaking place, Cork City and CountyCouncils are fully appreciative of the

cooperative approach shown bycommuters and local residents inrelation to the projects, which are duefor completion shortly. A temporary60kph speed limit remained in placethroughout the works area to ensurethe safety of workers and motoristsalike.

These are tough times for everybodybut Cork City and County Councils aredoing everything in their power toensure that the roads network in Corkis amongst the very best in the country.Despite the obvious financial restrainshindering them, they are doing anexcellent job.

At the time of writing, Moloney’s wereoffering great deals on a large selectionof nearly-new Renault and Ford vans.Would it be fair to say that they areweathering the worst of the recession?

“It’s busy enough, thank God, buteverybody is feeling the effects of the

“We are doing a lot of van hire at themoment – small, medium and large, everything from fridge vans to box vansetc. We offer excellent long-term dealsand we are very competitively priced. Our customers would include localauthorities, leasing and hire companies, local firms and businesses andmembers of the general public.

“We have a very modern hire fleet, withnothing older than three years, and thisis standing to us big time.”

As for the future, Dan says he is quietlyconfident that Moloney’s Garage cancontinue to offer its customers theexcellent service for which it isrenowned: “We are ticking over. Weoffer keen prices andof course customersappreciate this. It’sall about price – andquality - these days. Our rates are

Service with a smileMartin Byrne is one of those lucky enough to have been able to mixbusiness with pleasure to develop a thriving business that has served himwell for three-and-a-half decades. The Laois man called on his lifelongpassion to conceive and develop Martin Byrne Car Dismantlers in Stradballyand the family business is today recognised as one of the leaders in its field.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS76

Irish Trucker recently popped into the yard of Martin ByrneCar Dismantlers at Killone, Stradbally, County Laois and itwould be fair to say that these people are happy in their

work. That’s probably one of the reasons why they are also sogood at what they do! This business enjoys a stellar reputationfar and wide and there is a palpable sense of purpose andenthusiasm about the operation that goes a long way towardsexplaining Martin’s success and popularity.

The eponymous founder holds all the relevant waste permitsto collect scrap vehicles nationwide and he is prepared to payfor these with cold, hard cash. Parts are salvaged from theunwanted cars / vans and these are in turn sold at anaffordable rate to customers from all over the midlands and

much further afield. As business models go, it’s a fairly simpleone. But also very, very effective.

That’s not to say the business just blossomed by chance. Tothe contrary, a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into buildingMartin Byrne Car Dismantlers up over the years but theproprietor’s irrepressible passion for cars drove him on andthe result is impressive – as a whole host of satisfiedcustomers will readily testify.

Martin’s daughter Lisa works alongside him in the familybusiness and she explains: “Dad would have set the businessup 35 years ago, when he was 18, so this is what he has beendoing all his working life.

“He bought his first car when he was 18 and literally took it

Waste permit are in place tocollect scrap vehicles nationwide

Page 24: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

apart himself and sold the parts. That’s where the businesscame from. He just kept at it and gradually built it up.”

Today, Martin Byrne has a presence nationwide and he alsohas his own End Of Life facility on site in Stradbally fordisposing of waste vehicles. He employs nine people, whichis a major accomplishment in the current economic climate. The value of those jobs to the local rural community isimmeasurable.

Lisa continues: “We take scrap cars from the public for cash.

A lot of these would be 1997-to-2004-reg. We then sell theparts and crush the rest of the vehicle. We have a very largefacility here with a lot of storage space, storing both old carsand parts.

“We also sell some damaged, repairable cars.“We have two lorries out on the road every day and we

would pick up about five cars nationwide every day. As wehave the waste collection permits for every county, we areable to operate nationwide. From all the scrap cars we collect,

Page 25: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

we have a vast range of spare parts butwe also have suppliers in Dublin whocan supply us with new parts for ourcustomers if we can’t get second-handones.”

While the economic downturn hashad a severe effect on manybusinesses, Martin Byrne CarDismantlers has so far survived theworst effects of the recession. Businessremains reasonably brisk and Lisa saysshe would be happy enough if theycould continue along current lines:

“We are kept going and I supposethat’s all you can ask for these days. You have to appreciate the work youhave and thankfully we are kept tickingover. We provide an excellent service. You will always have your quiet times atdifferent stages in the year, like anybusiness, but generally we are doing

okay and we can’t really complain.“We are trying to take in as many

vehicles as we can so we can keepstock levels as high as possible.”

Regarding the catchment areacovered, word of mouth has ensuredthat Martin’s reputation has spread farand wide. “We get customers from allover,” Lisa confirms. “Martin is in thisgame so long now that he knows a lotof people and he has a lot of goodcontacts all over the country. Most ofour customers would be local but weget business from all over, includingquite a few from Dublin.”

As for the future of Martin Byrne CarDismantlers, it’s a case of full steamahead. They will continue to do whatthey’ve done so well for the past 35years, adding to their product rangeand services as much as possible. “We

have extended the business over the

years and bought adjacent land to

enable this expansion,” Lisa

concludes. “We’ve had a new crusher

shipped over from Bulgaria and we can

now crush the vehicles here on site

before bringing them to Dublin to be

disposed of.

“We’re trying to get the message out

there to the public that we are prepared

to pay cash for their scrap cars. We

have people out on the road every day

and we will collect the cars for free and

make a payment in cash up front. We

will take care of the collection or, if

customers would prefer to drive the

cars in to us, that is fine as well.

“We are getting in a lot of cars all the

time but I’m sure there are many more

out there just sitting around going to

waste. This is Martin’s lifelong passion

and he has managed to keep it going

and build it up over the years. We’ve

invested a lot of money in the business

and we hope this will serve us well in

the future.”

So far, it’s been working like a

charm…

MMR: The recyclingspecialistsMMR: The recyclingspecialists

The recycling of ferrous and non ferrous metals is a specialised area thatonly a few companies in Ireland concentrate on. One such firm is Donegalbased McElhinney Metal Recycling and for this month's edition of IrishTrucker we speak to the company's managing director Kelvin McElhinneyabout the success of the business.

The fleet allows Kevin totransport a wide range of

materials

With a fleet of six trucks at their disposal,

McElhinney's can cater for all types of scrap

metal, big or small.

“From a tin can to a transit van we recycle it, and we'll even

collect it! We pay cash for all scrap metal delivered to our

yard at Glenside Park, Ballybofey. Our on-site drive on

weighbridge will accurately weigh your metal, means that you

get paid straight away,” revealed Kelvin.

With an array of vehicles that include skips, grabs and

recovery vans, McElhinney Metal Recycling can collect a

wide range of scrap. The business is based at Ballybofey, Co

Donegal, having moved from Letterkenny last September and

Page 28: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

in the intervening years, the company has made a majorinvestment upgrading the facilities to the proper standard.

“We service local authorities, private business and thegeneral public six days a week with a modern fleet ofcollection vehicles fitted with grab loading cranes. We alsooffer a state of the art mobile crusher and shearing service toassist in the collection of all types of scrap metal waste. Weprovide Roll On-Roll-Off type skips in all shapes and sizes.”

With a modern fully waste permitted scrap yard facilitystrategically positioned in Letterkenny they are one ofIreland's most successful and innovative recyclingcompanies.

MMR has developed a reputation as being the one of theleading players in its field of expertise, specialising inrecycling ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The company hascertainly moved with the times and no expense has beenspared in installing the latest machinery and technology toensure that all metals are disposed of in the proper manner.

The process of car and light commercial dismantlers haschanged dramatically over the years and a few years ago, theterm 'car breakers' was made defunct as operators in thisindustry were ordered to obtain the necessary licence tobecome Authorised Treatment Facilities.

Established five years ago, the company grownconsiderably during the intervening years and through its site, they now have all the facilities to manage all the scrap thatpasses through the yard.

Responsible disposal of all metals also reduces the amountof such scrap being illegally dumped and Kelvin stressed thatall legislation is properly adhered too.

“The legislation has changed a lot even in the few years thatwe have been in business. There is a lot of paper work nowand everything has to be recorded from when its first in ourpossession until it goes to recycling.”

There are many differentstrands to the haulage industryand one of those is wastemanagement, which isarguably the most contentiousof them all, given the legislationand regulations that areinvolved in the day to dayoperations. In the past decadeor so, waste management hastaken on a whole new meaningas the consciousness aboutthe environment and thedamage that is being done byus is being highlighted andscrutinized a lot more andrecycling is now a priority foreveryone from homeowners tomulti-national companies, butas Kelvin reveals, the strain ofdisposing of scrap can be apainless one.

“The metal is weighed and wewill pay accordingly. Thebeauty is that rather than

Summerhilldistributioncelebrate 15 yearsThe success of any business can be gauged on their longevity and the factthat Summerhill Distribution Ltd is celebrating its 15th anniversary this yeartells its own story.

Summerhill Distribution wasestablished 15 years ago

Page 32: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile thisRoscommon based company and speak to managingdirector Pat Hyland about the changes that have

encompassed the industry in recent years. The haulage trade has suffered more than most since the

Celtic Tiger stopped roaring about three years ago. Higherfuel prices and lower rates have made it very difficult tosurvive in the industry and unfortunately for some they havenot survived these testing times.

However, experience counts for a lot during these daysand Pat has that in abundance as he has been involved inthe industry for many years. “I started up the business about15 years ago, I was an owner driver with C&C and my firsttruck was a Volvo 192. From there I expanded over thefleets and the fleet now consists of nine trucks all of whichare Volvo,” said Pat.

“We specialise in groupage and mainly deliver drinks fordistributors. We have a yard in Ballydangan in Roscommon, where we also have a warehouse. This industry is customer

driven and it is all about providing the best service possible.Pat revealed that ensuring that deliveries are on time is their

main priority and this is something that they strive to beconsistent at. “All deliveries have to be made on time, this iswhat the customer expects and nothing less is acceptable. We employ ten people here, most of whom are drivers andthey are very reliable, many of them have been with me foryears. The drivers are the ones out there representing thecompany on a daily basis and dealing with the customersregularly and we're very fortunate to have such dedicatedpeople on the books.”

Summerhill Distribution Ltd is a family run business as Pat'swife Angela and daughter Carol are involved in the day to dayrunning of the company while younger siblings Ciaran andSharon are already showing an interest in the haulage trade.

Pat prefers Volvo trucks to carry out their daily schedule andhe has always chosen the Swedish make. “I find that Volvoare the most reliable trucks on the road and I've always used, right from the start.

“We deal with Reynolds Trucks in Drumraney in CoWestmeath and have been doing so form many years now.We have a good working relationship with them and they takecare of the majority of our maintenance work.

“It is important to ensuring that downtime is kept to aminimum and to this end we make sure that the trucks arekept well maintained. The fleet is kept relatively new, althoughwe are not changing them as frequently as we use too a fewyears back.”

Pat reveals that they like everyone else in the country havehad to tighten their belts when it comes to expenditure. “Thisindustry has taken a massive battering in the last few years. The rising cost of fuel is the main issue with everyone. It is

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 85

The companyspecialises in

groupage

Page 33: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

crippling the industry and ithas become increasinglyhard to make a profit andwith rates being slashed aswell, I would have the saythe future looks very toughunless there is somethingdone about it.

“The Government don'tseem to be willing to doanything about the price offuel and although there hasbeen talk of a fuel rebatescheme being introduced, Ipersonally can't see thathappening in the next fewyears. But, there needs to besomething done, it really isat crisis point now.”

Despite all this Patrevealed that having areliable customer base is amassive plus in this industryand it is something that he isvery grateful for. “We knowour customers and theyknow us. We are fortunate to beworking for such reliable people. Youhear horror stories of all hauliers notgetting paid for months on end, butluckily we don't fall into that category.

“That doesn't mean that we can reston our laurels and we have to ensurethat we keep supplying the service thatthey want, otherwise they will just taketheir business elsewhere and who canblame them.

“Business has certainly improvedslightly in the last year, but untilthere iss o m e t h i n gdone about thefuel prices, Ithink mostcompanies willstruggle. Insaying that weare happy withour workload, although that'snot to say thatwe are activelyseeking morework all thetime.”

The whole area of legislation andstandards in the recovery sector haschanged significantly during Jamestime in business - but while some mightthink all that paperwork could be anobstacle to business, it's something hewelcomes greatly.

“There is a lot of paperwork, but it hasto be done in order to keep everythingabove board. The legislation in thisindustry has changed a lot over theyears and rules are there to be adheredtoo.”

James admits the job can be very

much seasonal and stated that thelast few winters were a very busyperiod for the company. “Thiswinter was quiet enough as it wasmild, but the couple before thatwere very hectic.

“Thankfully not every call out wasan accident as there was a largenumber of breakdowns. We arestill kept busy enough with the cartransporter and that sees us goingto the UK a few times a week tobring vehicles back for some of themain dealers in the country.”

Vehicle transportation is a specialisedand highly skilled service

Harron Transport Ltd. is a vehicletransport service provideroperating throughout the UK

and Ireland, specialising in car and boattransport. By providing an unrivalledlevel of service over the past decadeand more, the company has built up anexcellent reputation nationally asexperienced professionals offering a

reliable vehicle collection and deliveryservice.

using Harron are manifold – all theirstate-of-the-art auto carriers hold up to13 cars and the company is fully-insuredto guarantee complete peace of mind.Competitive rates for the transportationof new and used vehicles are providedand a friendly, reliable service is offeredat all times.

The range of services includes – but is

Page 44: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

not limited to – car transport, fleetservice, port collection and delivery, boat transport, plant machinerytransport and specialist vehicletransport. While traditionally vehicletransportation can be stressful, HarronTransport Ltd. completes its work witha minimum of fuss. Its well-presentedand highly-skilled and –motivateddrivers – who are carefully-chosen andfully-trained – use the latest satellitenavigation systems and hands-freemobile phones to ensure that they arecontactable at all times.

No job is considered too big or toosmall. From a single car to a full fleet ofvehicles, Harron Transport Ltd.possesses the equipment, manpower, expertise and wherewithal to provide acomplete vehicle transport solutiontoday.

Reflecting on the genesis of thebusiness, Gerald Harron, whoestablished the company, notes:“We’ve been transporting cars since

January, 1996 and we went limited in2002. I had a background in the motortrade myself and I saw an opening inthe market to set up a companyproviding a car transport service.”

It was an inspired decision. Thingshave gone from strength to strength forthe County Fermanagh headquarteredcompany but this has not happened bychance – a lot of time, effort andmoney has been invested in providinga superb level of service and, gradually, Harron Transport hasestablished a reputation for itself asone of the best in its field operating inthe British Isles:

“In the early days, we transported alot of damaged cars,” the founderrecalls. “I had lived in London and Istarted buying and selling cars after Icame back home and I bought a lorryto transport them home as nobody elsewas doing that at the time. Thebusiness just grew from there. We nowwork all over the UK, Northern Ireland

and the Republic of Ireland.“We move new and used vehicles,

working mostly for dealers (whoaccount for about 80% of the work) andgarages. We provide a completeservice from source to destination, including shipping.”

The Harron fleet comprises sixtransporters at present, all rigids whichare manufactured by TransporterEngineering, Rolfo and Hoyner. Theseare maintained in top condition andhave the muscle and efficiency toprovide an unrivalled service. “There isplenty of competition in this line of workbut we have been at it a long time nowand we provide the best service andthe keenest rates,” says Geraldconfidently.

Currently providing gainfulemployment to a crew of ten, HarronTransport Ltd. is performing well atpresent despite the national and globalfinancial crises that are wreakinghavoc with the transport sector and

with people’s livelihoods in general:“We’re still quite busy,” the managing

director confirms. “Even though there’snot a massive demand for new carsthese days, the second-hand marketremains very active and thankfully weget a fair bit of work from that. We arekept going and we’re always on thelook-out for new drivers. You needgood drivers in this line of work andours are the best. We take them in andtrain them to the highest standard sothat they can go out and represent thecompany – and our partners –withdistinction.

“We also have a full-time mechanicand we do all our servicing here on-site.”

Looking to the future, Gerald isoptimistic that he can continue to growthe business through ongoing steadywork in car transportation and also byfurther exploring new emergingavenues in the area of boattransportation:

“We are happy with the car end ofthings at the moment and I would alsohope to build up the boat transportationa bit more. We’re very busy around theLough [Erne] here at this time of yearand there aren’t too many others inNorthern Ireland providing thisparticular service.

“We have a new Andover-built trailerespecially for that. It’s tailor-built fortransporting boats and there’s bigdemand on that trailer in thesummertime.

“At the end of the day, we know whatwe’re doing and we offer an unrivalledservice from start to finish. We providea complete package including vehicleescorts, permits, traffic managementetc. and our safety record is second tonone, so I’m hopeful that people willcontinue to use our service.”

No doubt they will – you can’t getbetter than the best!

It is a common known fact that every haulier owns a number of trailers andthey are as important as the trucks that they have in order to ensure thesmooth running of the business.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 99

The before and after shots of a trailerrefurbished for Enva Environmental

Nonetheless, when it comes to needing service andrepair work on trailers, some garages frown upon thisarea and have no interest in doing such procedures.

This is where Clare based Mid West Trailer Works strivesahead of its competitors and Irish Trucker spoke to managingdirector Aiden McAteer about his area of expertise.

Having worked in Toomebridge manufacturing trailers for anumber of years, Aiden realised that there was a niche in themarket for trailer maintenance and in 2010; he established hisown business at Thomond, Industrial Estate in Sixmilebridge.

“I have a good few years experience in the industry havingworked for C-Tech and Central Welding and Tanker Servicesin the past and I decided to set up on my own, having talkedto a number of hauliers in the area about getting somebusiness.

“Thankfully, some of them gave me a chance and from therethe customer base has expanded over the last 18 months. It

wasn't the easiest of times to start a business, but throughplenty of hard work, I've managed to get it off the ground.

“I've found that getting out and meeting the customers is thebest way of attracting business as you can tell them face toface about the service provided.

“We always feel that if customers are happy leaving, thenword of mouth will carry through. We are committed tooperating our business by keeping the interest of ourcustomers in mind at all times. We also offer a pick up andcollection service, which customers can avail of.”

The facilities at the plant in Sixmilebridge are second to noneas it is a purpose fitted out premise that has all the moderntechnology in order to complete their task to the highest level.

“We offer a unique service in that we specialise in fleetmaintenance. Trailers have progressed a great deal over theyears and there is a lot more work attached to them thesedays,” said Aidan.

There are two full time employees and one part timer at thebooks of Mid West Trailer Works and they work together tomeet the demands of the customer, which sees them workingoutside the normal office hours on a regular basis.

“We know that haulage industry centres on time and whena trailer is in with us, it's not making money for the owner, sowe endeavour to have a quick turnaround. We can completea full refurbishment of a 40ft trailer in a week, which is goodgoing.”

They will also check trailers before they are due a serviceand it is basically preventive maintenance, which cutsdowntime for all owners, a pleasing factor for everyoneinvolved in the haulage industry.

Aiden revealed that during the current economic crisis, itwas important to inform customers of how much they wouldbe paying for the company's service.

"People are certainly a lot more price conscious now thenthey would have been a few years back and I'd like to thinkthat we are very competitive when it comes to pricing jobs.

“These days' people want to know what they will bespending and this is another unique service that we provide. It is something that we have worked on for some time and thefeedback that has been received back is very good.”

At a time when many businesses are focused on survival,Aidan has placed an emphasis on ensuring that thecustomers come first and making sure that they feel safe inthat they are receiving a top quality service at a reasonableprice.

“I want to get across that we are introducing a fresh newapproach to the business. Any new customers will bewelcomed and if they want we can carry out any sort of workon the trailers."

More and more hauliers are ensuring that their trucks and

trailers are kept inpristine condition toensure longevity. Toachieve these goals, many are turning torefurbishment work aswell as generalmaintenance andrepairs.

Mid West Trailers hasbuilt up a large customerbase over the years andAiden revealed that theiraim is to ensurecustomer satisfactionthrough a high level ofservice.

“We have gained areputation for highquality repairs andrefinishing work. Whatour customersfrequently comment onis the service that ourteam provides from firstcontact to thecompletion of anyproject.

“We pride ourselves inbeing able to offercomprehensive repairand refurbishmentservices on all makesand specifications oftrailers.”

A dedicated paintbooth and shot blastingarea allows Aiden toperform refinishing workto the highest standardwhether it be a small jobsuch as a crash bar rightup to a 45ft trailer, all ofwhich can be done ineither one-pack or twopack paint systems.

Aiden admits that likeall businesses the lastfew years have beentough especially in an industry that involves haulage as it hasbeen hit harder than most.

“It certainly has been a tough couple of years, there is noquestion about it, but many hauliers are turning to placingmore of an emphasis on maintenance and refurbishmentwork and we are reaping the benefits of that.

“We have set our ownstandards and it is up tous to maintain them andtry to improve on them. Ido feel we are heading inthe right direction and ouraim is to maintain ourcustomer base andhopefully expand on thatover the next few years.”

Ballantine’s dayIn business for almost 60 years, A.S. Ballantine Ltd. has forged a stellarreputation for itself in the quarry and civil engineering sector.Headquartered in Strabane, County Tyrone, this family business alsoprovides a comprehensive heavy haulage service. Irish Trucker caught upwith director Stanley Ballantine to take a closer look at the impressiveoperation.

A.S. Ballantine Ltd. wasestablished by Albert Ballantinein 1953. During six successful

decades working in the quarry and civilengineering contracting business, thecompany has made quite animpression. The superior product theyhave been quarrying, supplying anddelivering over the years hascontributed to this relentless growth - itis an intrinsic part of the roads, homesand utilities which make life today moreconvenient and comfortable.

In a nutshell, A.S. Ballantine Ltd.provides quarry products, contractcrushing and screening services, asphalt and tarmac supply, heavy planthire and volumetric concrete batchingtrucks as well as a keen heavy haulageservice with a range of vehicles

available from low loaders to dumpers.Today, the business is fronted by the

founder’s sons Stanley, Jonathan andWesley, whilst a fourth brother Raymondruns a separate but related companydrilling quarries for blasting. “Wespecialise in the supply of quarry stoneand all types of crushed rock,” Stanleynotes. “We also have a second quarry inConvoy, County Donegal, which webought in 1979, quarrying building andaggregate stone.”

A fleet of ten vehicles includes sixtipper units, one Scania and threevolumetric concrete mixers, which mixthe concrete on site in accordance withprecise customer requirements. “Theseare American mixers – made byArmcom – mounted on Volvo andScania bodies,” Stanley continues.“They are especially good for smallerjobs. The customer doesn’t have toworry about the quantity as he will getthe exact amount and the concrete canbe mixed to any strength on the spot.”

A.S. Ballantine Ltd quarries a high-quality Whin stone, which onceprocessed provides products for its

asphalt / tarmac plant, for use in thevolumetric concrete batching trucks andquality hardcore supply for theconstruction industry. They also operatea plant hire service, based aroundmodern equipment with rigorousattention to safety and reliability.

Moving in line with technology, constantly embracing new methods andequipment, A.S. Ballantine has grownorganically since the early days.Ongoing investment in mobile crushingand screening equipment has facilitatedthe growth of the business and the sixdecades of experience garnered sincethe company’s genesis are key to thecontinued success of this multifacetedoperation.

The team at A.S. Ballantine implicitlyunderstands every aspect of theindustry they operate within, offeringboth versatility and expertise to a widerange of satisfied customers, with amajor emphasis on excellent quality(products and service) at all times.

“All of the stone is supplied locally. InDonegal, it’s mostly farmers and privatebuilders who purchase it,” says Stanley.

The company is headquarteredin Strabane, Co Tyrone

The company has beenquarrying since 1953

Three volumetric concrete mixers, which mix concrete on site

Quarryingfor stone

Page 50: Irish Trucker magazine August 2012

“Since the tax went up to £2 a tonne ayear ago – a 50% increase in price -stone is quite expensive in the Northnow. People don’t want to pay the taxand they will do anything they can toavoid paying it, so that’s a problem forus.”

All the plant, equipment and vehiclesare maintained in excellent condition.

Regarding the haulage fleet, Stanleyreveals: “We used to have a full-timemechanic and did all the maintenancein-house but Sean Kelly Commercials inFintona looks after the Scanias for usnow and some of the drivers double upas mechanics.”

Stanley has a soft spot for oneparticular lorry in the A.S. Ballantinefleet: “We have a six-wheeler Foden andit is a brilliant lorry. It’s 400 horsepowerwith a 16-speed gearbox. It’s strong andreliable, with lightweight steel andrubber suspension, and it would go upthe side of a mountain. We have twoFodens in the fleet at the moment butwe bought eight new ones back in 1976.They’re a great lorry … it’s a real pitythey stopping making them.”

The director admits that some days arebusier than others but says the team atA.S. Ballantine will “keep tipping along”.He concludes: “We’re also doing a bit ofcontract crushing and screening for thelikes of Norman Emerson and ColtonQuarries and that keeps us ticking over. We’re doing some mobile crushing for

Fermanagh District Council and somecrushing & demolition as well.

“We also sell IntegraSpec insulatingconcrete formwork which is used forbuilding energy-efficient houses, resulting in an air-tight house that holdsthe heat brilliantly.”

Clearly, A.S. Ballantine Ltd. isn’t goingto be caught with all its eggs in onebasket. It’s due to this foresight that thecompany is still going strong almost 60years after its inception.

McCallister Transport is anexceptional general haulagecompany, fronted by managing

director Jonathan McCallister, andheadquartered in Banbridge, CountyDown, along the main Belfast to Dublin(A1) corridor. Offering warehousing andshipping facilities, the companyspecialises in general and specialisedroad haulage.

Jonathan’s father Trevor was the manbehind the genesis of the family businessalmost three decades ago. He reflects:“Trevor McCallister & Sons is anagricultural merchants, which I set up in1984. We would always have beeninvolved in a bit of haulage, due to thenature of the main business. About tenyears ago, we diversified and set up aseparate haulage company, calledMcCallister Transport.

“We’d have come from an agriculturalbackground, originally selling andtransporting fertilisers. Our first lorry wouldhave been an AEC, which was built inEngland and was more than ten years oldat the time. Those were very popularlorries back then. We then had a Ford Dseries, TK Bedfords, Volvos and LeylandDAFs.”

Today, McCallister Transport operates afleet of three Scanias - R580 and 164-480.With the fleet of available trailers includingflat-beds, curtainsiders, low-loaders, liquidtankers and bulk blowers, they canprovide a wide range of transport solutionsto a host of satisfied customers.

Operating throughout Northern Ireland, the UK and the Republic of Ireland, typicalcargoes include fertiliser, timber, steel, shipping containers, agricultural produce, grain, machinery, plant, furniture, houseremovals, dry goods and hazardousgoods.

McCallister Transport can also offer up to8,000 sq.ft.of warehousing.

They ship weekly to and from the UK viaStranraer, Heysham or Holyhead. Afamily-run business, providing personalattention to individual customer needs anda quality, punctual and affordable serviceat all times, McCallister Transport comeshighly recommended by its longstanding

list of regular customers.Fully licensed and with a fantastic record

in Health & Safety, the company is notcurrently feeling the ill effects of therecession that’s gripping Ireland andthreatening to spill over from the Eurozoneinto the UK.

As Trevor reveals, things are going wellfor the family business, thanks largely tothe stellar reputation they haveestablished for themselves down throughthe years as a company that can bedepended upon, with almost threedecades of experience (between theagricultural business and the haulagecompany) in excellent customer service:

McCallisterTransport is athriving family

business

“We’re busy enough at the moment.Depending on the time of year, we wouldbe importing and distributing differentproducts – timber, coal, steel, plastics, fertilisers etc. – and I suppose theworkload would be different from oneweek to the next. But we’re ticking overquite nicely at the minute so we’re notgoing to complain. “We’re happy enoughand a lot of our customers are stickingwith us, which is reassuring. Jonathanhas been MD of the transport companysince we set it up ten years ago and it hasbeen going well. We have a solidreputation and there’s plenty of workthere at the minute to keep us going.”

As for the future, Trevor saysMcCallister Transport will concentrate onproviding its existing clients with anunrivalled level of service whilst alsokeeping an eye out for new openings andopportunities. As they have thewherewithal to transport literally anything,

they are not limited in terms of thesolutions they can provide; this versatilityshould continue to stand to them in thefuture as it has clearly done to date:

“Word of mouth means that we arealways getting enquiries and of coursewe will always look at anything that willturn a profit. We have the capacity tocarry literally any load in Ireland or in theUK so naturally we consider anyproposals that are put to us. You wouldn’ttake on a job just for the sake of it, but ifthere’s a small profit to be made, then wewill give it a go. At the end of the day, weare here to provide a service and wehave the equipment, the personnel andthe expertise to do so at a reasonablerate. But margins are very tight and ratesare low at the moment, so it can bedifficult to get the balance right and keepthe books balanced. But we’ve done okayso far.”

Of course, the biggest threat toeveryone operating within the transportindustry is the spiralling cost of fuel andtalk of further increases to UK pumpprices in the form ofyet another carbontax will do little toalleviate the growingsense of uneasebeing felt byoperators. With theprice of diesel alreadyat an all-time high, the situation is surelycoming close to beingunsustainable.

While companiesare forced to try topass these increaseson, there is only somany times they cando so before theyreach breaking point.

It’s a headache everyone could certainlydo without, as Trevor concludes: “Fuelhas increased in price by more than100% since McCallister Transport wasestablished. It now accounts for morethan half of our overall running costs, which is a big concern.

“Hopefully, something will change in ourfavour soon. In the meantime, we willcontinue to provide both new and existingcustomers with a quality service that theycan depend on.”

The best by MoylesFronted by a man with half a century’sexperience of the motor industry, Moyles Garagein Nenagh, County Tipperary offers a stellarrange of services including sales (new andused; cars and vans), parts, servicing, repairs,NCT preparation and VTN testing of light andheavy commercial vehicles. Irish Truckerpopped into the well-appointed facility on theOld Birr Road for a chat with founder / proprietorTom Moyles.

Ideally located within the heart ofthe midlands and just 90 minutesfrom Dublin, Moyles Garage on

Nenagh’s Old Birr Road suppliesquality new and pre-owned cars, 4X4s,MPVs and vans to a wide selection ofsatisfied customers. But thetransaction doesn’t end with thehanding over of keys - the back-upservice provided is quite simplysecond to none.

Specialising in Hyundai but with athorough working knowledge of allmanufacturers, Moyles Garage offersthe complete package - sales, service, parts and everything in between.Operating a new computerisedcommercial test lane, the CountyTipperary place of excellence alsoprovides VTN testing for light andheavy commercial vehicles.

The founder boasts a veritable wealthof experience of the motor trade. TomMoyles served his time with E.A.Moynan on Clare Street, Nenagh. Healso worked with Oliver Madden,Cloughjordan, Kellers Garage, Nenaghbefore returning to E.A Moynan for afurther 12 months. E.A. Moynan thendecided to close their garage and Tomfound himself out of work.

“It was a bit of a coincidence that Ifinished back where I had started. Iwas just after building my own houseand had little or no money to my namebut I managed to start working formyself at the rear of the house. I haveoften said that I started with the skyover my head. I had to work outside inall weather,” said Tom.

“I would like to thank those peoplewho came to me to get their repairs

and servicing done, in fact some of those people are stillloyal customers today. As I had just borrowed to build ahouse, the bank would not lend any more money to build aworkshop. I had to save bit by bit to build a workshop 20ftx 22ft. I worked from there from 1975 to November 1990.”

Building the business was Tom’s aim but he had to do sothrough a personal tragedy.

“It was during this period that I suffered my greatest loss.In June 1981 my lovely wife, Elizabeth, was diagnosed withbreast cancer and in July 1983 she lost her battle with thedisease at the age of just 34. She was a wonderful lady inevery way. I was left with five children to bring up, rangingin ages from one to 12-years-old. To this day my children

have never caused me any problems and are my bestfriends.”

As the business continued to grow, Tom purchased land onthe outskirts of Nenagh on the Old Birr Road where he built amuch more spacious workshop.

“On the 2nd of November, 1990, I started here on the OldBirr Road. The following year I built a new heavy testingfacility and in 1992 light goods testing came in and weextended the testing to two lanes.

“I took on the Hyundai franchise in 1991. I was the thirddealer in the country to be appointed. I kept the Hyundaifranchise until March 2004. As with all distributers Hyundai

wanted new showrooms built and at that point in time marginswere getting smaller and overheads were getting higher. I hadno debts and intended to stay that way, so I did. I am now aHyundai sub-dealer.”

With a sophisticated, state-of-the-art on-site workshop andembracing all the latest equipment/technology, MoylesGarage provides a full range of workshop services includingservicing, NCT preparation and both mechanical andbodywork repairs, working on all vehicle types. This businesshas come a long way since Tom took it upon himself to go outon his own almost four decades ago and all the signs are thatthe future is bright for Moyles Garage, despite the economicdownturn currently wreaking havoc with the industry ingeneral.

“I would blame the Green Party for a lot of the problems thatwere caused to the motor industry. They have a lot to answerfor. People that bought vans etc. now cannot afford to taxthem or keep them. As a result garages have lots of spareparts that we cannot sell,” said Tom.

On the testing side of the business, the prime location ofMoyles Garage brought regular business from local fleets, including the likes of Eircom, An Post and Nenagh Co-Op.There were boom times for a while but, as Tom points out witha rueful smile, fleets have dwindled in size since those headydays of short-lived national prosperity and a large percentageof this work has dried up. Still, he’s kept reasonably busy andcontinues to provide an exceptional level of service acrossthe board.

“We can cater for everything from cars to light and heavycommercials. We keep the workshop up-to-date and we useall the latest tools and technology. It’s important to keep up tospeed with developments in the industry. There are two fully-qualified mechanics here at the moment, plus myself.”

Tom manages the test centre himself and he admits that, with the workload unpredictable, he experiences a lot morequiet days now than he did in 2011: “This time last year thetest centre was booked up fully two weeks in advance. Now

you take it day by day. There has beena huge drop-off compared to this timelast year.

“To be honest, we would struggle butfor the fact that we haven’t manyoverheads. This allows us to focus onproviding a quality service at anaffordable price. I own everything hereand it’s all fully paid for with no loans ordebts hanging over the business.

“When I built the garage, interestrates were 21% and I had bought a 2.5acre site which has served us well. Imanaged to get it paid for within eightyears and that has left us in a verystrong position. We’re in a greatlocation and we have plenty of spacehere.”

It’s difficult to measure the sheeramount of work that Tom invests intothe garage. He runs a very tight shipand puts in the hours – every day! He isopen for business from 8:30am until7:00 pm and is the first man in and lastman out.

Moyles Garage carries all the main

parts for topmanufacturers, includingHyundai, though the MDnotes that “Hyundai are soreliable that you need tostock very few parts…”

As for the currentdownturn, he adds: “Theseare bleak times for themotor trade in Ireland andI’m worried that it could getworse before it gets betterbecause there are a lot ofempty houses and cars ‘offthe road’ and things aregoing from bad to worse. We get enquiries now asking how mucha service will cost and that neverhappened before. Obviously, there area lot of variables involved in everyservice and you can’t give a definiteprice over the phone as vehicles haveto be serviced properly, some peoplecan’t afford to spend their moneybecause of all the uncertainty and whocould blame them.

“Either way, thingsare hard forgarages. We onlyhave about 50% ofthe commercial workwe used to have. The fleets havediminished and thetradesmen aregone. It’s a totallydifferent landscape.

“I’m in my 50thyear since I startedin the industry andI’ve seen a lot ofchanges, a lot of upsand downs, but thisis definitely worsethan the 1970’s.

Back then, everybody had room to goforward. Now people are justemigrating because there is no hopeand you even see cars just abandonedat the side of the road.

“Finance is difficult to get and it’s onlyreally customers with their own moneywho are buying cars. Sales are low, soservicing and testing have become thebread and butter. Fortunately, webenefit from a lot of repeat custom fromclients we looked after over the yearsand that’s keeping us going.”
