The Seaside Highland Games held each year on the shores

of the Pacific Ocean in Ventura, California are preparing to en-joy this, their TENTH ANNI-VERSARY YEAR! Great plans are coming together for the full-blown Scottish Festival visitors

have always loved: the bagpipe and drum bands, the Highland (and Irish) dancers galore, the Scottish Heavy Athletes (the LARGE MEN THROWING STUFF) and three stages o"er-ing an array of the best Scot-tish/Celtic entertainers to be found anywhere! Of course, many Clan Societies and oth-er Scottish organizations will be represented—about eighty strong—as well as fiddles and harps, skittles and beer! OK, maybe not skittles, but we do have a new HARP GLEN spon-sored by the Clan Currie So-ciety which will be an exciting destination. Look for the only Scottish Fiddle Competition on the West Coast conducted and taught by Champion Fiddler Colyn Fischer and his Peat-Fire Flame partner, Shauna Pickett-Gordon.

Sara Goodman’s All Breed Herding Dogs will show their skills at rounding up the flock

in their own arena near the Highland Heavies and Bydand Forever, the commemorative company of the Gordon High-landers will do their amazing black powder drill on both days in Morgan Arena.

AND, we are very pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS 1st MARINE DIVISION BAND from Camp Pendleton will be on hand for the entire weekend!

!e MARINE BAND will take part in all major Festival Parades and Ceremonies start-ing with the Games GRAND PARADE AND OPENING CEREMONIES at NOON on Saturday. Be sure to be on hand at this great show of pageantry, color and patriotism as they lead the hundreds of pipers, drum-mers and Clansmen in this Grand March. All venues come to a halt as we celebrate our her-itage—our American heritage (with a LOT of Scottish thrown

in)—in this brief break before the grounds become a beehive of activity again.

Many of you know about the Friday night pre-Games functions at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel—the Single Malt Scotch Tasting and the “A Scottish Evening” dinner,

entertainment, fashion show event immediately following. At least the 350 of you who at-tend are aware…. BUT, what even the most hip among you do not know is that there will be an ALL NEW SCOTTISH

The Seaside Highland Games are one of the years highlights not to be missed!... parades, music, delicious food, games, a bit of shopping and entertainment of all sorts.

To mark the fifth year of the ever growing LA Irish Film Festival, a traditional Irish Currach will be built by an

artisan /boatwright from Donegal. !e theme for year five is aptly “Sea of Exchange”, representing the emigration of people as well as films. !e Currach is the ideal symbolic vessel of this exchange. Comprised of essential elements and put together with diligent attention to detail, it in itself will be a key work of art in this year’s celebration. !e five day process will begin in the lobby of the opening night gala venue and will continue through the next 4 days of the festival, amid the displayed works of Irish painters and artist and festival patrons. On day five of the festival, a family beach day is planned with the ceremonial launch of the currach in the Pacific Ocean.

Currach builder Donal Mac Polin will make the journey from Ireland and shepherd a hand picked team of local craftsmen through the ancient steps of construction and assembly. In this way the pres-ervation and handing down of Irish culture will be truly international. !e Sea of Exchange continues.

The Currach Project

Looking forward into the hull of an Iniskea Curragh.

Irish Music: NEWS & REVIEWS

New CD and Tour Announced

Following a lifetime of success as a founding member and leader of the legendary Wolfe Tones for some 40 years, Der-

ek Warfield has now assembled some of the finest young talents on the Irish music scene.

His love for our musical heritage is such, that a way to pass on our tradition was of vital importance. So a new day dawns on the Wolfe Tones legend and over 50 years on from his debut performance, Derek Warfield is delighted to present ‘!e Young Wolfe Tones’.

Since 2011, Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones have crisscrossed the Globe and held concerts across seven di"erent countries! 2011’s nomination as Ireland’s best folk group has helped put Derek Warfield & !e

Young Wolfe Tones in the ranks of the best known and sought after Irish groups today. Now the fame and stature they deserve and enjoy for their quality musical presentation of Irish ‘rebel songs’ and tradi-tional music is greater than ever.

Old and new fans are delighted with the release of Derek Warf-ield’s latest CD, WASHINGTON’S IRISH. !e CD is a work of love for Warfield and a mission of great importance for him as a seri-ous historian as well as a gifted musician.

Wrath of McGrath

We wanted to do a feature on Wrath of McGrath for our 20th Anniversary issue for a lot of reasons. One very special reason

is that this great Irish American Band was once called IRISH EYEs and they were the first group that we wrote about in 1992 when we started as the Irish News of California.

!rough the past 20 fleeting years, a lot of things have changed (besides our respective names) but there has been one unfailing constant; Evan and Terri McGrath have a great Irish band and they consistently deliver a great show and Irish Music experience.

!e Wrath of McGrath Band has been a McGrath family ven-ture over the years, as mentioned they started in 1984 as “Irish Eyes” and consisted of founding members Evan, (vocals, guitar, harmonica, and guitar synthesizer) and wife Terri, (vocals, flute, piccolo, keyboards, tin whistle, and tambourine). Evan’s and Terri’s son Brendan McGrath played with the Wrath for a few years as lead guitarist but now has his own band, !e Heist, which consists of 5 “twenty-somethings” who strictly perform Classic Rock.

!rough the years Wrath of McGrath have played all over Southern California; just a few of their concerts and performances were at the Irish Fair at Santa Anita for many years, at FAIRPLEX in Pomona since its inception in 2002, for the Irish Day Civic Cer-emonies at City Hall and at the LA Plaza and as the headliners for several years in Redondo Beach at the south Bay St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival. Also for many year, Wrath played pub gigs, private events and we’’re told even the occasional Bar Mitzvah throughout California.

We are still dedicated to old fashioned com-munication and service to the Irish and Irish American community. We participate and at-tend as many Celtic and Irish Events as pos-sible. Now, by choice the Wrath have slowed down a bit and play a little less but they are always an integral part of the Irish Fair at FAIRPLEX in Pomona and have been performing about once a month at the venerable Ireland’s 32 Irish Pub in Van Nuys.

We look forward to covering their dates and concerts for many years to come. Meanwhile you can always check here and in our Weekly Irish E-Missive for their public appearances. You can also enjoy their CDs and they are available at the Fairs and appear-ances as well as on CD BABY.

When Vampires Meet

Actor and Folklorist Albert Ryan

Halloween, October 31 is that dark Autumn Night

of blood sucking vampires, flesh eating ghouls and brain eating zombies!

It is also the night when two relatively new vampires will stalk the cities and towns of America. !ey are Lord Gorf, the Irish Vampire from the old world and Sidarius, an ancient Syrian Vampire. !ey actually both haunt not only America but the whole world.

Lord Gorf will roam around not just in Hollywood, the Irish Pubs, theaters and streets of

By Sir Albert RyanAka -Lord Gorf, the Irish Vampire

America but also the ancient burial mounds and fairy circles of Ireland as well as the dark ruins of Stonehenge in bloody old England. Dressed in an Emerald Greed Edwardian suit with a ru%ed shirt, green bow tie and his signature Emerald Green Cape and Top Hat with long black hair and Mutton Chop sideburns, he has chalk white skin, blazing green eyes and ruby red lips with two long sharp fangs.

Sidarius, the ancient Syrian Vampire has his haunting terri-tory staked out as well! He will

roam around not just the an-cient burial grounds and ruins such as the Roman Colosseum, the Acropolis and the Pyramids and Sphinx but also the favorite spots of unsuspecting tourists and revelers throughout SoCal like the Chinese !eatre and the Greek !eatre. He is especially drawn to the to the Hollywood Wax Museum and the Cleopa-tra Exhibition at the California Science Center too. None of these places will be safe, look for Sidarius dressed in a long flowing ankle length silver and grey Turkish Carpet Style Robe with a black Dracula inspired cape with a silver or purple sat-in lining! He sometimes wears a black satin sash around his large waist, black gloves and black and silver Aladdin style shoes.

He wears his dark jet black hair in an Elvis Presley style and sports a Vincent Price type of mustache. !e blazing purple eyes are another dead give away! His neck is usually wrapped in silver beads and his gleaming sil-ver medallion on a silver chain hangs from his large whit neck. Be careful, especially on dark streets or alleys as Sadarius has the power to transfor instantly into a blood sucking, flesh eat-ing silver or black bat, cobra or even a Scorpion!

Actor and writer Sir Albert Ryan, our favorite Halloween Columnist, will once again be portraying Both Sidarius (!e Ancient Syrian Vampire) and Lord (!e Spi"y Irish Vam-pire) Gorf in full costume this

pearances at Halloween Events, Festivities, Fundraisers and Par-ties. Contact him through his websites: www.LordGorf.com or www.Sidarius.com

By Greg Patrick Red Dreams Falling

Greg Patrick. A dual-citizen of the Republic of Ireland and the states. Hails from the Galway/Connemara region where he worked with great horses for years, otherwise from the traveling people. An enlist-ed man’s son he spent his youth in the South Pacific and Eu-rope. Lived in California and London, returning to beauti-ful Ireland whenever possible.

“A dreamer is one who can find his way only by starlight. His curse is to see the dawn before the rest of the world wakes up to it.”-Oscar Wilde

!eir star-crossed and blade-crossed love was like that of Helen of Troy. Her was a face that was said to have “launched a nigh a thousand ships and arrows.”Yet so too could love be salvaged of hate, life be drawn from death.!e iron-shod hooves of the Norman knights were the tread of impending doom to the defenders of Waterford and at last he who was more warlord than “knight in shining armour”sought the renewal of life from the carnage wrought by the sword.

Like the phoenix of Scheharazadian lore was the tenacity of life during the dark ages of the isles.Yet so too was the oasis of passion yearned for all the more poignantly.!e radiance o"ered the vile contrast of hate shone all the more resplendently for it’s absence, like stars to night’s ebonite sea.As vibrant a juxtaposition as the sight of him nigh silhouetted against a grandly embroidered tapestry adorning the wall.He strode with a leonine grace and yet somewhat halted of gait as that of an equestrian fighter into the bardic assemblage. He came to enslave only to be enthralled in turn.

His high-borne shoulders marked him a feudal baron yet there was the more so of the untamed marcher lord to him, betrayed by his gaze of balefire microcosmed , for it was said that the bonfires of Wales never left their eyes. !e feigned auspices of gentility were as naught to his armour clad statuesque bearing.!e aged bard took no notice of him much less arise in deference as he sang in his arcane tongue, with sightless eyes. His sonorous poetry arising like a conjured High King’s ghost in their darkest hour.

Silhouetted she was against a resplendent crimson background of writhing hearth tendrils like charmed serpents, with the aspect of a Celtic queen enthroned yet more so like a demigoddess enshrined upon a dais.Conjuringly, beckoningly he played though he knew in his heart that no bard could do her exquisite beauty justice in the tongue of mortal man.It is well for the harp is the instrument of bards and angels.

!e chieftains were flanked by kerns and menacing gallowglass retainers yet even so the Norman knight was fearsome to behold. His armour still bore flecks of their rival clan’s blood it might as well have been their own blood.Even their rebel king could scarce suppress an inward shudder at this statue of Ares rendered animate.

!e usurper had sent for the mercenary army with the promise of his matchless daughter and the throne of Tara to be won by the sword. His betrothed the fairest of Erin’s daughters he beheld at last.Hers would ever be a loveliness unsung by the troubadours as none could do her justice in mere words of homage.!e song was all in her eyes and his sonorous gaze was a Gaelic serenade in tribute.!e freckles that constellated her facade of a Grecian goddess seemed myriad. !e pallor of her face seemed coroneted by a banner like cascade of braziered tresses of a Celtic demigoddess.

Like a hippocrene of bardic romance it seemed rendering her reginal countenance all the more striking. It seemed to Nordic eyes as if she were coroneted withthe Aurora Borealis itself as ever he beheld with pixilated eyes by dragon prowed ship.None had seen her like since Lady Guinevere passed into the mists of legend.

He was more Irish then than any there dared to be.Hiberiores hibernes ipsos. She seemed to have strayed from the illuminated manuscripts or a heroine from the sagas of the Gael returned. Her eyes seemed as voluminous as the Irish sea and yet more so in their unfathomed depth. He felt hopelessly lost in them as eyes of glacial blue met emerald sparkingly.

Ere he had first seen her he was scandalized by the emissary’s words. It was explained to him that despite his Nordic inclinations according to Brehon laws of the Dal Cais Celtic women could not be merely promised to a man. One cannot speak for a Lady of Erin. Much less her heart. He has to propose on bent knee not merely throw her across his shoulder and carry her o" like “the barbarian” he apparently was in their eyes. She had the right to refuse him and Aoife Mac Murrough was Amazonian enough in her inclinations to do just that.Yet in those rare moments of spontaneity that had proven so iconic he do"ed his helm and knelt to the lady of his heart of his own accord.

Like the Celts, the Hispanic Folk Traditions consider their ancestors to be important and an influence on our lives. Día de los Muertos, (The Day of the Dead) is a celebration, based on a merging of ancient Aztec rites with Catholicism. The tradition grew from the belief that the souls of the dead return to visit with and be with their loved ones. Many of the traditions are consistent with All Souls and All Saints Day in the Catholic Tradition.
