Irregular Verbs(It’s all about the patterns)

volo, velle, volui, no 4th p.p.

• What is the one thing you notice about this verb that indicates it is irregular?

• There is no 4th principal part.• Is there anything else that seems unusual?

• The 2nd principal part does not have -re• Does the 3rd principal part seem typical?

• Well it ends in – i like most other 3rd principal parts.• What conclusions can we make?

Conclusions

• We will not be using the 2nd principal part like we normally do.

• Since it is the 2nd principal part that forms the present, imperfect and future, it is these tenses that are irregular.

• We will use the 3rd principal part as we always have. So the perfect, pluperfect and future perfect tenses will be regular.

Here is another way to look at things.

• MEMORIZE the present, imperfect and future tenses of these new verbs.

• The other tenses follow the same steps as ALL other verbs, so review those steps from your folder. By the other tenses, I mean the perfect, pluperfect and future perfect.

On the next slide you will see the principal parts for the new verbs.

MEMORIZE THESE PRINCIPAL PARTS.

PRINCIPAL PARTS

• volo, velle, volui - want, be willing, wish • nolo, nolle, nolui - -not want, be

unwilling, not wish• malo, malle, malui - prefer

Important Information

• The present tense of these verbs is the most irregular. You will have to memorize the forms.

• The imperfect and future are irregular because they do not follow a set of steps, but…

• The imperfect and future are easier because they have an easier pattern to learn.

• There are NO PASSIVE forms to learn.

On the following slides you will see the present tense for three verbs.

• volo, velle, volui•nolo, nolle, nolui•malo, malle, malui

Present Tense of volo

volo - I want , I am willing, I wish

vis – you want, you are willing you wish

vult – he (etc.) wants, he is willing, he wishes

volumus – we want, we are willing, we wish

vultis – you want, you are willing you wish

volunt – they want, they are willing, they wish

Present tense of nolo

nolo - I do not want , I am unwilling, I do not wish

non vis – you do not want, you are unwilling you do not wish

non vult – he (etc.) does not want, he is unwilling, he does not wish

nolumus – we do not want, we are unwilling, we do not wish

non vultis – you do not want, you are unwilling you do not wish

nolunt – they do not want, they are unwilling, they do not wish

Present tense of malo

malo - I prefer

mavis – you prefer

mavult – he prefers

malumus – we prefer

mavultis – you prefer

malunt – they prefer

Now let’s compare them

Remember to look for the...

…patterns

Present tense of ALL three verbs

volo nolo malo

vis non vis mavis

vult non vult mavult

volumus nolumus malumus

vultis non vultis mavultis

volunt nolunt malunt

Do you see the patterns?

vis non vis mavis

vult non vult mavult

vultis non vultis mavultis

Now look at these

volo nolo malo

volumus nolumus malumus

volunt nolunt malunt

So its all about taking the time to see the patterns.

Now it is time to practice.Translate the following into Latin.
