NO NAME CALLING WEEKNo Name Calling Week, January 15-19, 2018, is a week

organized by K-12 educators and students to end name calling and bullying in schools.

The week is rooted in the idea of #KindessInAction — not merely recognizing the importance of kindness, but actively adding kindness into our every action. It's about calling people the names they want to

be called and avoiding slurs and stereotypes.Activities:

1. Daily quotes on intercom with daily announcements.2. All will be invited to design and wear a nametag with

their given name on it, reminding us of the importance of using people's names (vs. any other term) to address or refer to them. This is the only name we are meant to be called! All Staff members will participate.

3. Students can make posters with ties on them; colored in ties; poster will say, “We are all tied together.”

4. Door decorating contest for each grade level.5. Students can pick a name of someone in their class.

They then draw a copy of their hand on a piece of paper, cut it out, and write the student’s name in the palm; then they will write five nice things about them on each finger. Staff members will have the same option to do

1. Parents/Guardians will receive letters explaining the importance of talking to their children about “No Name Calling Week” underscoring our continued mission to have parents reinforce themes taught in school. This letter will be sent home the Friday before our school-wide activities begin.

2. In order to kick-off , “No Name Calling Week,” all are invited to design and wear a nametag with their given name on it, reminding us of the importance of using people's names (vs. any other term) to address or refer to them. This is the only name we are meant to be called! All Staff members will participate.

3. Tuesday through Friday, during morning announcements, students will read quotes about showing all students respect. Quotes are as follows:

a. Day 1. “In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr. Students, let’s remember that it is important to speak up if you hear/see another classmate, our extended family, being mistreated by others.

b. Day 2. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Martin Luther King wants us to remember that the more love and kindness we show, the less hate can stay in our surroundings.

c. Day 3. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” This is a famous quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His dream was that people aren’t judged by their looks, but by what’s in their hearts. Let’s remember to get to know people and not think we know everything about them based on how they look or where they come from.

d. Day 4. “The time is always right to do what is right.” ~Dr. MLK. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wants us to remember that we should never wait to report any instance where we see someone being mistreated.

4. Teachers will be given a packet of activities to reinforce our commitment to student safety for all. (http://www.bugforteachers.com/files/Download/no-name%20calling%20elementary.pdf)

Tuesday Quote of the Day: “Just because a person doesn’t put hands on you, that doesn’t mean that they are not abusive. Abuse is control, blatant disrespect, and also hurtful words. Don’t settle for emotional abuse thinking it’s ok because is not physical.”

“The tongue has no bones, but it’s strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words.”Wednesday Quote of the Day:“Calling someone ugly won’t make you beautiful. Calling someone stupid won’t make you intelligent. Making someone miserable won’t make your life happier. So, WHY DO IT.”

Thursday Quote of the Day:“Watch your thoughts, they become words.Watch your words, they become actions.Watch your actions, they become character.Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”

Friday Quote of the Day:“Because no matter what happened, I had the peace of mind of knowing all the chatter, the name calling, the doubting- all of it was just noise. It did not define me. It didn’t change who I was. And most importantly, it couldn’t hold me back.” -Michelle Obama

Name-Calling Week is an annual week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds and providing

Introduction to No-Name Calling week will be made by Ms. Hasan, the building’s HSSC:

Bullying can happen in many different ways. It can include teasing, being hurtful to someone, ignoring them or hurting them. It can also happen anytime – in person, online, on the phone, in class, on the bus, in your neighborhood, or even in your home. Bullying is usually done by people who do not feel good about themselves. They often need to put down others to feel better about themselves.

Bullying is never ok. The great thing is that there is much that you can do to stop or prevent it. If you see bullying happening whether to you or someone else, you need to take action.

This week Irvington High School will be participating in No Name Calling Week. We ask that you all take the pledge to end name calling and bullying in schools.

This week is rooted in the idea of #KindessInAction – not merely recognizing the importance of kindness, but actively adding kindness into our every action. It’s about calling people the names they want to be called and avoiding slurs and stereotypes.
