The Owl We all have friends, but what makes a good one? It’s a question we all wrestle with, but stu- dents at Irwin Academic Center follow a basic rule: To be a good friend, be considerate and helpful. Chances are, friends will return the sen- timent. Here’s what students had to say: • Cassidy Gant: “What makes a good friend is when you have a friend who will always be there for you and will stick with you no matter what, even when the times get tough. • Mia Delaney: “What makes a good friend is you should always make sure you care about them and when they’re down you should go over and help them and make sure they’re feel- ing OK.” • Anushka Pramanik: “Something that makes a good friend is treating them with respect be- cause if you treat them with respect, they’ll treat you back with the same respect. “If you’re nice to them, they’ll be nice to you. Just be nice to them, and you’ll earn it back.” Herbert L. White is editor in chief at The Char- lotte Post and advisor to IAC’s newspaper club. Irwin Academic Center May 27, 2017 What makes a good friend? By Herbert L. White On April 19, Irwin Academic Center hosted its annual fourth-grade Math Fair. Students were required to present projects that focused on how Math applies to everyday life. There were tons of projects such how geo- metric figures are used for everyday traffic sig- nals, how math applies to astronomy, and how math applies to cooking. Each student pre- sented their ideas with charts and 3D models. Fourteen finalists were chosen. There were win- ners from every fourth-grade classroom. The winner in Mrs. Reeves’ class was Tamara Williams, in Mr. Baker’s class it was Mahip Som- pura; in Mrs.Surrett’s class it was Ryan Ramzi, in Ms. Brooks’ and Ms. Smith’s class it was Jer- emiah Stith. The reason for the math fair is that they wanted to know what the kids have learned, and what was there progress for the year. All of the project ideas were very good and it looked like they put a lot of time into their projects. The student had to sit underneath the tables waiting for the judges to come around to them. All classes had other students earn honorable mention to show how they worked very hard on their projects. Adding it all up at Irwin Academic’s math fair By Mia Delaney and Cassidy Gant
