Indian Standard

SPECIFICATION FOR

HOLES FOR GENERAL FILING OF PAPER

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 31 August 1982, after the draft finalized by the Paper and its Products ( Excluding Packaging Materials ) Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Division Council.

0.2 For an efficient filing system, it is essential that the records are maintained in a neat manner and the time taken for filing papers is minimum. This is possible if the holes made in paper, for general filing, are specified with respect to their arrangement and dimensions. Further specification of these characteristics of holes, will aid in the manufacture of punches and files having compatible mechanisms.

0.2.1 This standard is based on IS0 838-1974 ‘Paper holes for general filing purposes- Specifications ‘, issued by the International Organization for Standardization.

0.3 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express- ing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard specifies the dimensions, spacing and position of the holes made in sheets of paper or documents, in order to permit their filing in ordinary files.

1.1.1 This standard applies to sheets or documents like, correspondence, standards, thin documents, that can be perforated in an office with a simple punch.

1.1.2 In general, it does not apply to sheets or documents like, loose leaf binders, special filing systems.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( reviesd).

IS : 10287 - 1982

2. ARRANGEMENTS

2.1 The holes shall be arranged symmetrically in relation to the axis of the sheet or the document, perpendicular to the line of the axis of the holes ( see Fig. 1 ).

NOTE - The axis of the holes shall be arranged parallel to the short or long edge of the sheet or the document, as required.

3. DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

3.1 Distance between centres of holes shall be 80 -& O-5 mm, diameter of hoIes shall be 6 & 0.5 mm, and the distance from the centre of the holes to the nearest edge of the sheet shall be 12 & 1.0 mm ( see Fig. 1 ).

All dimensions in millimetres.
