Automotive Basic Standards Sectional Committee, TED 1

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Automotive Basic Standards Sectional Committee had been approved by the Transport Engineering Division Council.

This standard has been prepared with the view to ensure the safety of the pillion rider on two-wheeled motor vehicles.

The testing criteria have also been outlined for guidance of testing authorities, designers and statutory agencies involved in the implementation of these standards.

In the preparation of this standard considerable assistance has been derived from EEC Directive 93/32/EEC ‘Passenger hand-holds on two wheeled motor vehicles’.

The committee responsible for the preparation of this standard is given in Annex B.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value. observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)‘. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

AUTOMOTIVE VEHICLES - PILLION

HAND-HOLDS FOR TWO-WHEELED VEHICLES -

REQUIREMENTS

1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard specifies strength requirements for pillion hand-holds for twowheeled motor vehicles.

1.2 This standard does not apply to two-wheeled motor vehicles on which there is no provision for pillion seat.

2 REQUIREMENTS

Where provision is made for carriage of a pillion, the vehicle shall be fitted with pillion hand-holds system, in the form of a strap or a hand-grip(s). The pillion hand-holds system shall be so fitted that it is convenient for the pillion rider to make use of it in his normal sitting position, irrespective of whether he is sitting side or cross-saddled.

2.1 Strap

The strap and its attachment shall be designed in such a way that they withstand, without snapping, a vertical

traction force of 2 000 N (200 kg) applied statically to the centre of the surface of the strap at a maximum pressure of 2 MPa.

2.2 Hand-Grip

The hand-grip shall be designed in such a way that it is able to withstand, without snapping. a vertical traction force of 2 000 N (200 kg) applied statically to the centre of the surface of hand-grip at a maximum pressure of 2 MPa.

If two hand-grips are used, these shall be fitted one on each side in a symmetrical manner. These hand- grips shall be able to withstand, without snapping, a vertical traction force of 1 000 N (100 kg) applied statically to the centre of the surface of the hand-grip at a maximum pressure of 1 MPa.

3 TESTING CRITERIA

3.1 Testing criteria shall be as given in Annex A.

ANNEX A

( Clause 3.1 )

TESTINGCRITERIA

A-l This annex gives the factors to be considered while selecting a pillion rider hand-holds system to represent a range of variants for ‘Qpe Approval as per this standard and the extension of Type Approval Certificate on one model to its variants.

A-l.1 In general, when changes in the technical speci- fication of the pillion rider hand-holds do not affect the requirements given in this standard adversely and is still within the stipulated limits, the type approval certificate shall be extended.

A-l.2 The testing agencies shall extend this type

approval of a model to other models/variants without additional tests in case of the following:

a) Sectional dimensions of the strap or hand- grip(s) used on other models/variants are not reduced.

b) Size and number of fasteners used in attachments is not reduced.

A-l.3 In all other cases the testing needs to be carried out.
