2 Terms and definitions

Fur the ourposcs of this European Standa rd. the terms ann defin itions following apply

c) contain liquids . pastes or solids (lor Instance powde rs or qranules):

,J ) be resistant to the st resses Imparted dunnq handling and transport as determined by tests.

NOTE 1 A lower size urnit IS not spccurod but an IBC of less than 0,25 m3 (250 I) IS atvpical and may require specralcon srderation 1'1 rela tion to appropriate perf ormance tests

tJ0 TE 2 IBCs may be desrqned lor sing le-trip or multi-trip use They may be desrqnsd to Iotd-cowr, or be dismantledwhen empty. They may be fitt ed Wi th an inne r liner

2.2metal intermediate bulk containerIBC havmq the body made of a metal such as steel or aluminium . designed to be in contact with the contents(either direct ly or through an inne r liner), and self-s upporting when empty.

2.3f lexible intermediate bulk container (FISC)IBe haVing the body made of a flex ible matena l such as wove n fabric . plastics film or paper. designed to be incontact Wi th the conten ts (eit her directly o r throug h an inner liner), and collapsible when empty.

2.4rigid plastics intermediate bulk conlainerIBC having the body made of plastics. des iqnec to be In contact With the contents (either directly or through aninner liner). rtqrd In that it IS self-support ing when empty or filled. and With the stresses of distribution (e.g. stacklcadmq) taken entirely or mainly by that body.

2.5composite intermediate bull, containerIBC comprising structural eqUipment in the form of a rigid outer casing designed to jake the stresses of distributionand enclosing an inner plastics receptacle designed to be in contact with the contents (either directly or through aninner liner). The IBC is designed so that. once assembled, the outer casing and inner receptacle form, and areused, as an integrated single unit for filling, storage, transport and discharge. The inner body may be rigid,semi-rigid or flexible but is not designed to directly take the stresses of distribution.

2.6fibreboard intermediate bulk containerIBC having the body made of fibreboard designed to be in contact with the contents (either directly or through aninner liner), and self-supporting when empty or filled.

2.7wooden intermediate bulk containerIBC having the body made of sawn timber or wood panels such as plywood or reconstituted wood, designed to bein contact with the contents (either directly or through an inner liner). and self-supporting when empty or fiHed.

2.8inner linerliner for an IBC comprising a separate tube or bag inserted in the body but not forming part of it and designed to bein contact with the contents.

2.9inner coatingcoating for the inner suriace of an IBC designed to be in contact directly With the contents

EXAMPLE The inner surface of a mild steel IBe is provided with an inner coating in the form of one or more layers ofpaint. This inner coating may be designed to protect the mild steel from interactions with the contents, or vice versa, or both.

This Indian Standa rd which is Identical to ISO 15867 : 2003 'Intermediate bulk con tainers (IBCs) fornon -dang erous goods - Terminology ' Issued by the International Organization tor Standarrnzation (ISO) WBSadopted by the Bureau of Indian Sta ndards on the recommendation of the Transport Packag es and PackagingCo des Section al Co mmn tee and approval of the Transport Engineering Div ision Council . .

The object of this standard is to define the various terms used in the class ificat ion and charac tensncs ofintermed iate bul k co ntainers.

Intermediate BUlk Containers (IBC s) cornpnse a famil y of large pack aqinqs whi ch are int ermediate betweentho se desc ribed in (a) and the 'tanks ' described In Ib) below

a) Transport packagings such as drums and sacks (bags ) are ge nerally manufactured within an uppersize limi t irrespect ive of the form of the contents. Suc h up per size limits are generally not speci fiedfor non-dangerous co ntents though they are for dange rou s goods. drums for example are limited toa capacity of 450 Iitres and to a mass of contents of 400 kg; and

b) Forms of 'tank' inc lude road tank vehi cles (for example for motor spint ) and ra il tan k wago ns . Theyalso include portab le tanks which may, for Instance, be Similar to the containment vessel of a roadtank vehicle but fitted with lifting devices .'Tanks' are normally regarded as items of transport equipmentrather than as packay ings and their use may be described as transport in bulk. In some circumstanceshow ever. su ch as in the ma rine mode . the term 'bulk trans port may be restricted to tank ships .

To de fine an IBC. it is nec essary to take account of size. the capab ility for mechanical hand ling , the na tureof the contents and the methodolog y for assessing performance.

Th e term lnterrnediat e Bulk Containers (lBCs) oriqmated In the English languag e to de no te a speci fic fami lyot co ntainers . !t is oft en transla ted into oth er languag es as a non-speci fic torm. In such Insta nce s referencemay be made io this standard fo r R denrution .
