IDENTIFICATIONOF PARTS FORCOMPLETE,FILLEDTRANSPORTPACKAGES WHEN TESTING
( First Revision)
O. FOREWORD
0.1This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) wasadopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 10October 1988, after the draft finalized by theTransport Packages Sectional Committee had beenapproved by the Marine, Cargo Movement andPackaging Division Council.
0.2 Packages may be usuaiJy of different shapes, suchas parallelepipedal, cylindrical or in the form ofsacks and bags. An “agreed standard on identifica-tion of parts of package provides a basis for unifor-mity of understanding while testing packages.
0.3 This standard was first published in 1973 andwas based on the International Standard 1S0 2206-1972 ‘Packaging – Complete filled transport pack-ages — Identification of parts when testing’, issuedby the International Organization for Standardi-zation (1S0). Subsequent to the revision of the1S0 standard in 1987, this standard has been revisedto bring it in line with the 1S0 standard. In thisrevision the identification of various shaped packageshas been made simpler by equating it to aparallelepipedal packages and identifying the compo-nents as surfaces, edges and corners as illustrated inthe figure in the standard.
1.SCOPE transported. If the transport position is not known, the manufacturer’s joint, if it exists, shall be placed
1.1This standard establishes a system for identifying vertically on the observer’s right.parts of complete, filled transport packages when 2.LI Surface — When the package is placed withtesting. one end surface facing the observer, the upper surface
2. IDENTIFICATION OF PACKAGESof the package shall be identified as No. 1, the sideon the observers’ right as No. 2,the bottom as No. 3,the surface on the observer’s left as No. 4, the nearest
2.1 Parallelepipedal Packages — The packages shall side as No. 5 and the side farthest away as No. 6be placed in the position in which it is intended to be ( see Fig. 1 ).

NOTE – Tf the package has more than one manu-facturer’s joint, the principle outlined above should beadopted by arbitrarily selecting oneendas No.5.
2.1.2Edge — Each edge shall be identified by thedigits designating the two surfaces the junction ofwhich forms this edge ( for example 1-2 identifies theedge formed by the meeting of the upper surface ofthe package, No. 1, and the right surface, No. 2 ).
2.1.3 Corner — Each corner shall be identified bythe digits designating the three surfaces that meet toform this corner ( for example, 1-2-5 identifies thecorner where the upper surface, the right-hand sideand the side nearest to the observer meet).
2.2 Cylindrical Packages — The ends of two perpendi-cular diameters on the upper surface of the cylindershall be designated as 1-3-5-7 and the other ends of

lines parallel to the cylinder axis passing throughthese points respectively shall be designated as2-4-6-8. Each of these lines shall be designated as1-2, 3-4, 5-6,7-8 ( see Fig. 2).
Nom-If the package has one or more manufacturer’sjoints, one of the joints should occupy the position5-6. The remaining designations shcn.dd then be madeon the same principle as outlined above.
2.3 Sacks and Bags — The sack or bag shall be placedon a face with the sealed end towards an observersuch that the side seam, if any, of the sack or bag ison the right ( or a seam on the right and a seam onthe left if the sack has two side seams ) or the longi-tudinal seam is downwards and the top ( filling end )of the sack is away from the observer. The upper-most face shall then be identified as No. 1, the sideon the right as No. 2, the lower most face No. 3, theside on the left as No. 4, the sealed end ( bottom end, that is the si& facing the observer) as No, 5 and thefilling end as No. 6 ( see Fig. 3 ).

2.4 Miscellaneous Packages — Depending on thenature and shape of the package, it may be conve-nient to give a number to each section of the packagein accordance with the method derived from one ofthose indicated in 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3.
