Program Terms and Principles

Chain of Commitment - a group of individuals who come together in a unified and collaborative effort to increase their individual and collective effectiveness. Unlike a chain of command, individuals within a chain of commitment are motivated by a sincere desire to improve themselves, their teams, the value they deliver to customers and stakeholders, and the environment in which they work. In the FULL INFUSION program, individuals must be part of a chain of commitment to qualify for personalized coaching and access to our educational materials.

Forensic Organizational Analysis (FOA) - a specialized assessment designed and administered to identify aspects of an organization’s operations and/or culture that are preventing optimal performance. Generally speaking, most reasonable people want to perform at a high level. When they don’t, it is often because their energy is being consumed by a need to cope with hardship. Because FOA is a way to identify where energy is being lost on coping, it sets the stage for positive change that can dramatically improve the feel and functioning of a team.

Mentors Among Us (MAU) - a program in which our executive coaches conduct live or recorded interviews of individuals having significance to our host organizations. Each interview, which last about 60-90 minutes, is conducted as an educational experience for the organization’s current members. Whenever possible, we seek to interview people who have high levels of institutional knowledge, are highly respected within the host organization, and have insights that would be of educational value to the audience. As part of the FULL INFUSION program, we conduct and record one MAU interview, usually in the latter half of the program.

Multimodal Blending - an approach to facilitating enhanced team functioning through the building of individual effectiveness at scale. In the FULL INFUSION program, we focus on presenting educational content that reinforces the coaching and consulting we do for our host organizations. Although most of our content is pre-prepared, we present it in a customized way whenever possible, which is informed by what we learn through our assessments and coaching sessions. Multimodal blending is simply the diversification of strategies leading to the host organization’s growth and enhanced overall performance.

Strategic Organizational Analysis (SOA) - a specialized assessment designed and administered to evaluate the strengths of people, teams, and organizations with an emphasis on scanning the host organization’s strategic environment for key opportunities to improve its culture and operations. This has the effect of expanding the overall capacity to deliver value to customers and stakeholders with minimal resistance. The SOA is a forward-looking assessment driven by an optimistic and resolute urgency to establish and advance key strategic priorities that raise the performance and reputation of the team or organization. The SOA is completed immediately after the FOA.

More than Leadership - Developing Executive Talent in Forensic Science January 21, 2020 by John M. Collins MA, SHRM-SCP

Over the last two decades, we’ve made it a priority in forensic science to teach leadership skills and build leadership awareness. This was a good thing.

For the better part of a century, the technical and scientific underpinnings of the profession matured. But as the 20th century drew to a close, we recognized the need to be more effective in how we managed our laboratories and leveraged the capabilities of our human resources.

Now in forensic science, just like so many other occupations, leadership training and trainers are about as easy to come by as office furniture. And, for the most part, this training delivers reasonable value to a wide variety of forensic science professionals hoping to expand their managerial capacities.

Once again, however, the evolution of forensic science has hit a snag.

As a profession, we seem to have grown satisfied with our attempts to develop leaders by simply teaching leadership principles. Fortunately, we can do better.

More than ever before, forensic science is in need of executive leadership talent - talent that transcends the rudimentary managerial themes to which most of today’s leadership training exposes its students. Executive leadership talent is a class above, requiring far more than just knowledge.

So what is a forensic science executive? The primary differences between managerial leadership talent and executive leadership talent lie within specific aspects of leadership performance that can only be gained through extensive experience, coaching, and mentoring.

Executives are leaders of leaders. In addition to the knowledge and insights they have gained through learning, the most successful executives are masters of self, easy to trust and difficult to upset. The vision they have of the future, combined with their justified sense of confidence, allows them to transcend the occasional hiccups that fluster the garden-variety manager. Executives are living examples of the towering heights that sound leadership can achieve when accompanied by an impressive mastery of one’s emotions and thinking patterns. True executives are a step above the rest, and we need more of them - not only in forensic science, but in every profession.

Executive talent arises from the many victories and defeats that come with hard-earned experience. And when the years of experience are not quite sufficient, effective coaching and mentoring can fill the gaps - allowing the emerging executive to learn from the experiences of others.

We need strong executive talent in forensic science. But to bring it to scale, we need to deepen and broaden the experiences of our current and emerging leaders.

Professional Intelligence - Putting the Frosting on the Expertise Cake July 1, 2020 by John M. Collins MA, SHRM-SCP

Most modern workplaces today have high demands for specialized knowledge and skill - what most of us like to call expertise.

An expert is a person who’s accumulated a very detailed and nuanced understanding of a subject matter to the extent that she is able to perform work, hold a job, solve problems, or answer questions that the rest of us can’t.

You might say that an expert is a sort of intellectual superhero who stands ready to provide help when hope would otherwise be lost. Few things are more impressive to watch than a skilled expert practicing her craft.

Said another way, we value expertise because it enhances our quality and duration of life.

What we find, however, is that a high level of technical expertise, more specifically, sometimes correlates with deficits in social skills. Although one’s technical or scientific capabilities are advanced, his ability to interact effectively with a variety of people in a variety of situations and circumstances may be limited, even impaired.

In my practice as an executive coach and leadership facilitator, I specialize in working with people, teams, and organizations that have a mission of public consequence - those whose work environments are technically, intellectually, or

ethically demanding. I’ve worked extensively with accountants, attorneys, airport executives, forensic scientists, engineers, and other professionals whose jobs require high levels of expertise.

The very skilled technical and scientific experts with whom I work also demonstrate high levels of professional intelligence. They are empathetic, engaging, and sensitive to people’s needs and wishes. They are coachable, accountable, and able to cope effectively with workplace pressures and stresses - both expected and unexpected.

But there’s one more thing I should mention - most of them are leaders. They are people who once worked in the technical or scientific trenches of their organizations but were, at some point, promoted into positions of leadership. Now, as leaders, they are responsible for dealing with the deficits in professional intelligence they now see among certain employees who repeatedly inject an unhealthy dose of toxicity into their teams’ work environments. So my clients look to me as their coach for insights on how to repair the damage.

In my opinion, there is no useful or valid causative relationship between high technical or scientific aptitudes and deficits in social skills. One does not cause the other in most instances. What is clear, however, is that the processes by which teams and organizations build the “hard” technical and scientific competencies of their employees too

often fail to incorporate the teaching of the “soft” professional skills of teamwork, tactfulness, diplomacy, conflict management, and stress resiliency that are necessary to enjoy a productive and satisfying career.

Adding to the problem is the need for today’s employers to quickly recruit, select, hire, and train employees who can do the work that needs to be done now. But it’s very important for employers to seek out job candidates who have a personal history of being coachable, conversational, and able to interact with different kinds of people even while engaged in complicated work activities.

Professional intelligence is one’s capacity to be successful in all aspects of work, and to be a capable negotiator of the opportunities and frustrations that are inherent to the employee-employer relationship.

Professional intelligence, you might say, is the frosting on the expertise cake. It’s what gives technical or scientific expertise its beauty, its warmth, its luster, and its charm. It’s also what allows us to trust and appreciate the person armed with impressive credentials and qualifications - the person we call the expert.

It’s time to rethink what it truly means to be an expert. Only then will our training and education programs catch up with modern expectations.
