Advantages

• An agency can rapidly “scale up” their computing capabilities if a sudden requirement arises, and rapidly release those services to quickly “scale in”
• For the agency, it is as good as having unlimited provisioning which can be purchased in any quantity at any time

Resource Pooling
• The computing resources of cloud providers (storage, processing power, memory, etc.) are pooled to serve multiple agencies using a model called "multi-tenant" model
• Resources belonging to different tenants (agencies) can exist on the same physical device and the resources of one tenant may be spread across multiple physical devices
• Cloud service providers follow a very cost-effective way by dynamically assigning and reassigning resources according to tenants' demands, which enables them to charge lower fees

• Agencies can store documents in a virtual cloud where multiple users can access and edit them, hence making real time collaboration of documents possible
• Cloud computing also makes collaboration easier by enabling agency staff to share multimedia files, have online discussions, and subscribe to dynamic content

• Traditional IT resources include large data centers and server farms, which require energy 24/7 to power up and cool the servers
• Data centers have enormous energy consumption and hence have large carbon footprints, because of which they have to comply with strict environmental controls
• Cloud computing is a green computing option, since it has a much smaller carbon footprint as it uses computing power more efficiently by limiting redundant systems

Disadvantages

• Remote server security makes it harder, but not impossible for hackers to reach data
• In case of a compromise of the servers where the data is stored, the clients’ personal information may be compromised and exposed to the world

Outages

• There are a lot of instances when we have been unable to access emails due to the providers being down
• Imagine if you need a document for an important business meeting or presentation and your storage provider’s site is down
• Such outages create a lot of problems for data access

• Data ownership can be a major hurdle in cloud computing, especially if you have a lot of data to handle
• There is no clarity about the ownership of data, whether it is the uploader or the storage provider who owns the data
• Reading the terms and conditions is necessary when dealing with the cloud

• Some customers find it convenient to get rid of hard drives as it reduces costs
• Certain programs need an attached hard drive. For such programs, it becomes inconvenient to use cloud computing
