WelcomeWelcometo Cuba, Missouri has painted the town, in a
big way! The city’s 12 murals have attractedattention far and wide. The Missouri legislaturehas proclaimed Cuba, “Route 66 Mural City.”The murals have been featured on televisionshows and in magazines and newspapers.Travelers along Route 66 post notes on theinternet of their Cuba experience.
It all started in 2001 when Peoples Bankcommemorated its 100th birthday by painting amural of the bank’s first cashier and long-timepresident. It also depicts the town’s first Model T.
Murals Everywhere!The first mural was so impressive that VivaCuba, a community beautification group,adopted a public art project to complete12 murals along Route 66 in Cuba. Thismulti-year project would involve thousands ofman-hours of work and thousands of gallonsof paint, and provide opportunities for local andnationally known artists.

Celebrating History and MysteryEach mural portrays an intriguing scenefrom Cuba’s heritage, from dramatic CivilWar battles to a mysterious stopover byAmelia Earhart. A campaign appearance byHarry S. Truman and an unauthorized photoof Bette Davis add to the mystique. Often,Route 66 tourists and other visitors gather andsnap photos of these supersized works of art.

Cuba’s Gold StarBoys from WorldWar II are shownhere, aboard the BlueBonnet Frisco Train,which whisked awaymany of Cuba’sservice men tojoin the war.The train was amajor form oftransportationfrom 1927 to 1967.
From 1895-1920, Cubawas the largest producer,processor, and distributorof apples in thestate of Missouri.The apples wereshipped by train inbarrels. Although theapple industry is longgone, barrel-makingremains one of Cuba’smost stable andproductive industries.

Paul T. Carr built this cottage style filling stationin 1932. In 1968, Bill Wallis converted it to the firstoffice for Wallis Oil Company. Bill died in 2001,but his family continues his legacy of business andphilanthropy. 6 This mural shows Al West Sr., Cuba’s mayor from1946-1958. During that time, the city purchased theelectrical system, paved and lit streets, and extended itswater and sewer systems. The Millworks recreates the look of the 1948 Roberts-JudsonLumber Co. Millworks Building. “Measure twice, cut once,”was very much the rule when employee of 54 yearsFrancis Nixon worked here. The River depicts the use of the river as a source ofrecreation, beauty, and transportation. During the 20s-40smany river resorts flourished along the rivers. The muralsponsored by the Bass family of Steelville, reflects their

In November 1948, Academy Awardactress Bette Davis and her husbandarrived in a Packard station wagon
