GEORGE FORMICOLA Italian LanguageGeorge Formicola started his career in education in 2011 when he became the first Supplemental Instruction Leader for Italian at Wayne State University. Since then, he has taught Italian courses at the University of Michigan, Grosse Pointe Public Schools, and the Italian Club of Livonia. He currently teaches Italian Conversational for PPL.
Even though his maternal and paternal grandparents were born in Italy, English was mainly spoken at home as George grew up. After taking Italian at Macomb Community College, he earned a B.A. and M.A. in Italian from Wayne State University. George once sat exactly where his students sit today. He believes anyone can become a native speaker!
Incorporating educational technology has always been a huge part of George’s teaching techniques, but when classes switched to a virtual format due to COVID-19, George developed new ways of using technology to engage students. Online video games were developed for students to use as a study tool, a virtual reality tour of Rome was created so that students could “travel” to Italy. The incorporation of these tools, as well as Italian music playlists, listening activities with native speakers, and videos from George’s YouTube channel, all contribute to the Italian language and culture experience.
From the metro Detroit area to as far as Boston and San Francisco, all who log on are eager to learn Italian. His unique approach to using technology, combined with his passion for all things Italian, make taking any course with George Formicola an enjoyable experience.
