Unwanted wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead, sagging

identical twins. A study in the November 2013 issue of Plastic and

Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the

American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) says that twins who

smoke show more premature facial aging, compared to their non-

smoking identical twins.

Comparing Smoking and Non-smoking Identical Twins

The twin study demonstrates that even a 5-year difference in

smoking history can cause noticeable differences in facial aging in

twins. Of the 79 twin pairs studied, fifty-seven were women of

average age 48 years.

Compared to their identical twins, smokers had more

sagging of the upper eyelids, as well as more saggy lower

eyelids and bags under the eyes. Facial wrinkles were also

more, including more pronounced nasolabial folds (lines

between the nose and mouth), wrinkling of the upper and

lower lips and sagging jowls.

The results of the study highlight that the effects of

smoking on facial aging are most apparent in the middle

and lower third parts of the face.
