Is Smoking Related to the Facial Aging
Process?
Unwanted wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead, sagging
skin under the eyes, and deep lines around the mouth are common
signs of facial aging. Smoking is also one of the factors that have
been linked to premature facial aging. Other factors that can
contribute to premature aging include sun exposure, drinking, and
weight gain. Smoking limits the blood supply that keeps the skin
tissue supple and healthy, resulting in facial wrinkles. The longer a
person smokes, the faster he/she shows the signs of aging.
It has been found that a smoker’s skin ages faster than that of a
non-smoker. This fact is better explained by a new study of
identical twins. A study in the November 2013 issue of Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the
American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) says that twins who
smoke show more premature facial aging, compared to their non-
smoking identical twins.
Comparing Smoking and Non-smoking Identical Twins
The twin study demonstrates that even a 5-year difference in
smoking history can cause noticeable differences in facial aging in
twins. Of the 79 twin pairs studied, fifty-seven were women of
average age 48 years.

Compared to their identical twins, smokers had more
sagging of the upper eyelids, as well as more saggy lower
eyelids and bags under the eyes. Facial wrinkles were also
more, including more pronounced nasolabial folds (lines
between the nose and mouth), wrinkling of the upper and
lower lips and sagging jowls.
The results of the study highlight that the effects of
smoking on facial aging are most apparent in the middle
and lower third parts of the face.
Is There an Effective Treatment?
Wrinkling and sagging can contribute to a tired facial
appearance. The visible signs of aging can be treated to a
certain extent with minimally-invasive plastic surgery
procedures. Facelift is one such option. Technically known
as rhytidectomy, this procedure can improve visible signs of
aging in the face and neck such as sagging in the mid face,
deep creases, loss of muscle tone in the lower face, and
loose skin and excess fat under the chin and jaw.

Advanced facelift techniques are available that can
provide less downtime, reduced discomfort, and quality
results.
The face can be made more appealing by removing excess
fat. Reliable plastic surgery practices utilize less invasive
radiofrequency treatments to help improve the signs of
aging and ensure minimal recovery time. Both BodyTite
and Fractora use radiofrequency waves for facial
rejuvenation and skin tightening effects.
BodyTite: Advanced BodyTite™ radiofrequency liposuction
is used to perform facelift surgery that is ideal for
patients with skin laxity and/or stretch marks along with
fat deposits. The procedure is performed under local
anesthesia and involves only minimal swelling, bleeding
and scarring. It can also treat specific parts that include
the lower regions of the face, brow area and neck.

Fractora: Fractora™ radiofrequency wrinkle treatment
slows down the effects of aging and restores the youthful
look of your skin.
The latest advancements in minimally invasive skin
rejuvenation and tightening, Fractora is an FDA approved
hand piece that is developed to work with the BodyTite™
system. Using RF waves, Fractora can effectively treat
smoker’s lips, loose skin of the cheeks, jowls and neck,
crow’s feet and wrinkles and lines around the eye, lip and
chin area.
Experienced plastic surgeons combine facelift with other
procedures such as brow lift and eyelid surgery for far more
attractive aesthetic outcomes. It is recommended to
choose an AAAASF-accredited plastic surgery center for safe
and superior results.
