An infant will learn how to express himself, respond, and understand when you communicate with her. All this happens before he says his first real words around his first birthday. It’s amazing how much a baby understands already, they are listening and learning all the time, as they make sense of their world. Between two and three years old, language continues to flourish. Children acquire new sounds and establish the basis for understanding new concepts. Their ability to string words together becomes more complex and their receptive language is expanding by the day. By 4 to 5 years an atypical child should be intelligible to people outside the family. A child in this age range will also show that he understands the basic rules of grammar. And you’ll be able to understand almost all of what he child says to you. Abstract (Click) Ages 2-5 (Click) For most children, receptive and expressive language develops in a predictable way. We identify the milestones for infants and young children and provide resources for parents and childcare providers to understand what's "normal" and what's not. These can help them determine if they should be concerned, have the child evaluated or if the child is “on track” during this critical period for language growth Developing language skills is of absolute importance for young children’s success later in life both as social beings and in pursuing an education. These developmental milestones are used for benchmarks to measure progress as children acquire language skills. Promoting a learning friendly environment where you read age appropriate books and find ways to play and have fun while teaching, will help accelerate a growing toddler’s language acquisition and start preparing him or her for school. There are serious negative consequences of failing to learn how to communicate. Understanding how language develops is vital to help choose the right activities that promote and accelerate learning while matching a child’s current language skills. By using the developmental milestones, speech pathologists and other professionals can observe young children to appropriately identify students at risk for later problems and prevent communication disorders.
