0 FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part III ) was adopted by the Indian Standards

Institution on 29 July 1977, after the draft finalized by the Fishing

Vessels Sectional Committee had been approved by the Marine, Cargo

Movement and Packaging Division Council.

0.2 This Standard is Part III in the series on otter boards, Part I and

Part II cover general requirements of flat rectangular otter boards and

rectangular horizontally curved otter boards respectively.

1. SCOPE

1.1

This standard ( Part III ) deals with the materials and general require-

ments of oval otter boards.

2.

TERMINOLOGY

2.1 For the purpose of this standard,

the definitions given in IS : 7595

( Part I )-1975” shall apply.

4.

CONSTRUCTION

4.1 The constructional details of oval otter board complete with fittings are

shown in Fig. 1. The sides of the board shall be strengthened by mild steel

sheet and the bottom part shall be filled with cement and iron pieces.

4.2

For protection against corrosion, all metal parts shall be painted with

a paint conforming to IS : 1404-19704.

5. DIMENSIONS

5.1 The length and width of an otter board shall preferably be in a ratio

of 1.6 : 1.

5.2

Brackets

5.2.1 The fore bracket shall be fixed and the rear bracket shall be of

adjustable chain bridle, fixed at distances of 22.5 ~percent and 39 percent

of the total length of the otter board respectively from the fore and rear

edges of the board.

5.2.2 The brackets should be positioned at the symmetry axis of the

board and their apex should fall approximately at 40 percent of board

length from the fore edge.

5.3 Rings -

The fittings for rings on the outer side of the board for

connecting the back strop shall be approximately at 20 percent of the length

of the board from the rear edge of board.

5.4 Back Strop -

The length of the back strop and bridle shall be as

agreed to between the manufacturer and the purchaser (see Fig. 2 ).

5.5 Shear Angle - Shear angle for oval otter boards ranging between 30”

and 40” is considered most suitable.
