I am Isabella Cinà, a second year student at the University of Waterloo, School of

Architecture. This portfolio is a collection of my work and interests to date.

I am a dedicated and enthusiastic student and I am very excited to become immersed

in the creative process of design in the work force. I am a fast learner and enjoy

picking up new systems and concepts. I am a motivated student and an enthusiastic personality with a passion for all forms of

learning; all I need is an opportunity.

Thank you for taking the time to look through my portfolio. Enjoy!

01nomadic capsule

The design for this project developed from two ideas: shipping crates and inf inite space. This

pre-fabricated capsule was designed to be extra smal l and eff icient for a nomadic l ifestyle and to accommodate a community based environment.

The spaces transit ion into each other creating a l inear f low between the private and publ ic.

These extra smal l l iv ing units are also designed to be environmental ly sustainable through the

use of natural l ighting and venti lation, as wel l as passive heating and cool ing systems.

02Royal Bank of Canada

The Evolve Sustainable Design Competit ion chal lenge is to design a net-zero energy and

water-wise bank branch for the Royal Bank of Canada. It leads architects to explore the design

and function of a typical structure and develop ways to minimize its energy and water use

through the use of passive systems. This branch uses solar energy with PV panels, a greywater

system, rainwater col lectors, kalwal l panels and large south facing windows in order to aquire

net-zero energy consumption.

03collector’s house

This is a house designed for a rock and mineral collector. The private and public spaces are organized into a specific

hierarchy throughout the house. There are two separate entrances; the first leads into an underground public

exhibition space that also includes a personal workshop for the owner. The second is a private entrance into the semi-private living spaces. Finally the upper level is a private loft

that opens up to a rock garden on the roof.

cast - Plaster is poured into a foam cube filled with balloons. Once dry, the foam walls are torn off to reveal the cast.measurment - Without breaking the cast, sections and plans are extracted through a variety of measuring techniques.transformations - This is a study of the measured drawings using a series of repetitions, reflections, distortions, and rotations.sculpture - Extracting information from the transformation study, a paper sculpture is created without the use of any adhesives.

station exhibitionGhost Town is an exhibition of the unbuilt and

speculative work of twelve emerging Melbourne architecture practices. It is about giving a life to

the dead-end, rejected projects that are inevitably part of any architectural practice. Bild Architecture’s

Catalogue of Splendid Failure presented a cabinet filled with models of unbuilt work recording four

years of past tested ideas. Although each of these design ideas were not used for the particular project

for which it was originally intended, together they have created a catalogue of design ideas that may be

drawn on in future projects.

explorations06

The following pieces are part of a collection of visual and interacrtive explorations. I attended the Toronto School of Art before beginning my

undergraduate degree in architecture. I was able to explore space and the unconcious through ex-

perimentation of subject matter and materials.

07human intervention

As you walk into the park, you are immediately attracted to the riverbank; however the first thing you encounter is the tree. The

branches extend outwards over the open space and create a natural canopy. A permeable wall of rope was constructed with the intention

of providing seating and a place of rest. The wall is an extension of the main protruding branch. It is still clear when nature ends and the human intervention begins through the use of materiality and form.

The wall of rope is built to be tensile in order to allow for people to lean against it while sitting on the ground. Wind also causes movement in the tree and resonates in the rope. The wall appears continuous from

certain perspectives, but is actually composed of individual walls or ‘hammocks’. These hammocks can be travelled through and are also

angled to focus on different views across the river, creating a deeper connection with nature.
