On the subject o ideology, I believe

Indonesia remains as one o thecountries with judicially conducive

and established democracy. Indonesia

is also one o the important and

leading democratic countries in South East

Asia. Historically, Indonesia can be considered

as the most revolutionized countries in terms

o its political ideology. In attempt to reach

the real democracy, (in which the transers,

discoveries, and expression o ideas, opinions, and thoughts are justiable and liberated)

Indonesia has passed several momentous

political reormations. One o the signicant

revolutions was in 1998 which is oten called

as “era o reormation”. At this point, the iron-

handed regime o Soeharto was tumbled

down by people o Indonesia, led by thestudent movement. During the regime, the

actualization o democracy had been impeded

as the access and opportunities in expressing

ideas and opinions (especially regarding the

governmental works) had oten been restricted

and oppressed by the central government. In

respond to the democratization as the part o

globalization, many Indonesians at that time

ound this restriction as dictatorial governance. Thereore, by May 1998, the reormation took

place where Soeharto gave up his position

as President and by that time, our political

ideology revolutionized in accordance with

the next presidents’ governance, which is to

say, the real national-wide democracy where

people are now living in era o inormation

literacy reedom, participation in every national

political policies, and open-mindedness.

On the subject o International Relations,

Indonesian oreign policies remain as

independent and active. The policy is

independent because Indonesia does not

take any sides o world powers, whichmeans being neutral and objective in acing

international issues. The oreign policy is

active to the extent that Indonesia does

not sustain a passive or reactive stand on

international issues, but inquires about active

participation in their resolution. In other words,

Indonesia’s independent and active policy isnot a neutral policy, but it is one that does not

align Indonesia with the super powers nordoes it bind the country to any military pact.

Essentially, it is a policy designed to serve the

national interest while simultaneously allowing

Indonesia to cooperate with other nations to

eradicate colonialism and imperialism in all

their orms and maniestations or the sake o

world peace and social justice (Embassy o The

Republic o Indonesia, Washington, D.C.). I we

see through this point o view, it indicates that

Indonesia has managed to be “laissez-aire”or exible yet deensive in positing itsel in

international arena. Nevertheless, actualizing

it is hardly easy. As the ‘newbie’ in establishing

the real democracy, acing the trans-cultural

and multidimensional eects o globalization

and ree trade, Indonesia seems to have

several diculties to survive its political, social,

and economical stabilities, both at national

and international levels. Furthermore, in thehighlight o multiculturalism, establishing

a strong tolerance and solidarity within our

society is a vital thing to create a just and

civilized humanity in order to reach a stabile

national security. Unortunately, until this

moment, Indonesia still needs to struggle

more to reach this point regarding so many

hindrances. Indonesia is now acing a dilemma

in actualizing a social integration. There are stillsome cultural, religious, and ethnic conicts

happen in several parts o Indonesia. Not only

that, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, prescriptive

thoughts, and prejudices regarding people

rom dierent background and ethnicity exist

in almost entire society. This kind o situation,

hamper us in reaching a good and benecial

uture o the country. I the people themselves

are not united and solid in one mission and

vision, keeping their own interests, and hurting

each other, then how can we create a good

uture together? I most o the people inside

the country can not even manage to respecteach others’ dierences, then how can we

manage to be able to ace cultural dierences

at international level?

In respond to the problems mentioned

above, on the subject o youth, I believe it is the

most potential source or us to tackle problems

in Indonesia. The prospect and competence o our young generation is the sole determinant

o predicting our uture success. Younggeneration is our human capital. Thereore, in

producing and rearing young generation, lay

the essential groundwork or the ormation

o human knowledge, skills, creativity, and

innovation. That is to say, productive and

knowledgeable young generation is the

key ingredient in the recipe or success

and prosperity in the post-industrial and

globalization age, both at national and

international levels. In this case, what exactlyhas the most to do with producing convenient

young generation nowadays and in the uture

is education. Thus, establishing convenient and

prevalent educational policies are crucial.

Conclusively, in achieving political, social,

and economic stabilities both at national and

international levels, young generation is really

important as they are “sprouts” o our humancapital. Thereore, Indonesia needs take morecredits in managing and improving its youth’s

qualities, which in this case, education is the

signicant instrument or actualizing it.

So ar, what Indonesia has achieved

according to MDGs? Which goal

that has been achieved better than

other goals? Reerred to UNICEF-

Indonesia’s website, Indonesia

seems more successul in achieving 2nd

goal o MDGs which is “by 2015, all children

can complete a ull course o primary

education, girls and boys”. According to

that act, I will emphasize my writing on

Indonesia’s achievement in 2nd goal o

MDGs.

MOVING TOWARD TO BETTEREDUCATION IN INDONESIA WITH

MDGS

Millennium Development Goals are eight international goals that have been agreed by 192 countries, members o United Nation (including Indonesia). The aim o MDGs is toencourage development by improving social and economic conditions. All o the goals areexpected to achieve in 2015. | By: ARYA SATYA NUGRAHA

Decades ago, most o Indonesians

thought that education was not playing

important role in human’s lie. They

thought that education just wasted their

money and they couldn’t earn money

or their daily needs with it. At that time,

people did not consider education as a

long-term investment. They also did not

think that literacy played tremendous

role in human’s entire lie. During t hose

dark decades, many parents chose to let

their under-aged children working in rice

elds instead o going to school. People

anak sekolah, source: Kompasiana

i S P E A K u P

also married in very young age (compared

with today’s situation). Instead o getting

primary education, a 13 years old girl might

have been proposed as soon as she got her

rst menstruation. She then got married

with a boy whose age was not much older

than her. This teenage married-couple

did not have a chance to get primary

education. They, as well as their parents,

did not even realize that getting primary

education was a right that’s supposed to

be ullled especially or young people. We

couldn’t blame on them or their parents

who gave such permission; the situation

made this thing happened. It was caused

by a wrong paradigm that lived in society.

What Indonesia has achieved according

to the 2nd goal o MDGs is a remarkable

achievement. The old paradigm has

changed with the new one which co nsiders

education as an important need, as

well as shelter, ood and clothes. Most

parents who come rom dierent layers o

economic have agreed that education is a

channel to do social mobilization and to

get better social stand. The rate o literacy

is increasing due to public ’s awareness in

education especially the primary ones.

Statistic shows, rate o children in Indonesia

who attend elementary school (SD) is 94.7

percent and the percentage o kids who

attend junior high school (SMP) increases

every year. Maybe this achievement is an

eect o government policy that has madenine years education (during SD and SMP)

become compulsory or both boys and

girls.

Despite those high achievements,

government still has some undone tasks

according to 2nd goal o MDGs. As written

in constitution, government must allocate

20% (per year) o total government’s

expenditure (in APBN) or education. In act

the 20% o total government’s expenditure

in APBN is not ully organized and not used

by ministry o education to make primary

education become more accessible,

especially or those who live in remote

region. Even the 20% expenditure is used

by another institution/ministry or civil

servants training. Many people still doubt

Indonesia’s achievement in providing

accessible primary education or all citizens,

though the statistic almost reaches 100%

citizen’s participation in primary education.

Besides, we can still nd dierent quality

o education; the government has to x

it. Government must ensure that every

child in Indonesia gets education equally;

there must be standardization in recruiting

teacher, especially teacher or primary

schools because we know primary school

plays important role in shaping one’s

personality so that government should

give higher wages or qualied-teachers

who teach in remote regions.

Five years to go to 2015, the year when

all the targets o MDGs are expected to

achieve. The government should not only

consider the achievements according to

MDGs quantitatively but also qualitatively.

The matter is not only about “how much

children have attended the primary

education?’’ but also “how good is the

primary education in Indonesia?” By the

year o 2015, I hope all o us can live in

better Indonesia where everyone gets what

they are supposed to get, such as good

education.

Free Trade Areas are agreements among nationsthat decrease or diminish trading boundariesand protections to enhance economic activitiesamong member countries. It is part o the eortto create equal opportunities o development

through easier access or investments and trading.

Indonesia as a member o international communityalso takes part in ree trade area agreements. The mostrecent is the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA).

This cooperation between China and ASEAN memberstates reduces taxes or goods traded between theparticipants and provides easier access or investorsto invest capitals in both regions.

Active participations in CAFTA oer hugeprots or Indonesian economic development. Itprovides opportunities to build stronger economyand enhances economic growth. Mainly, there arethree main benets or Indonesian government onparticipating in CAFTA.

First, CAFTA provides new potential market orIndonesian economy. China is a potential market dueto its largest population o more than 1.1 billion people.

This huge amount o population benets producersdue to high consumption. The CAFTA reduces tax andother barriers that prevent Indonesian goods romentering the Chinese market as well. Thereore, itcreates wider possibilities or Indonesian producers tomarket their goods in China and gain more prot romthe new market. It leads to the growth o Indonesiannational industry which increases national economicdevelopment and provides

higher job opportunities.  The CAFTA also provides

easier access or investorsrom both countries toinvest on either region. Thiswill increase the number o investments in Indonesia.

The biggest problem inIndonesian economy is thelack o capital. A signicantincrease in the amount o investment shall solve theproblem o capital and allowIndonesian economy to growrapidly. It provides possibilitiesto create new industries thatopen bigger employment

opportunities and enhancement in current industrieswhich shall improve the national economic. Foreigninvestments in Indonesia also enhance transer intechnology and experts. This shall decrease theIndonesian technology and capability gap, thereoreimproves quality and eciency in production.

The third benet rom Indonesia’s participationin CAFTA is the improvement and enhancement o international relationship with China. An agreementin ree trade area shall increase interactions betweenboth regions and create more intense relations. Chinais a growing international power; thereore goodrelationship with China shall benet Indonesia in bothpresent and the uture. An agreement in ree tradeareas may also open possibilities or cooperation inother sectors and areas.

The agreement between China and ASEANmember states, including Indonesia, to ratiy ree tradearea cooperation between both regions show thatglobalization is actuating in areas o lie. It benetsIndonesian through easier access towards existingmarket and higher possibilities or investment alsocreates a better relationship with China. Thereore,CAFTA serves as a policy that provides great potentialor economic development which is essential indeveloping countries like Indonesia. This agreementalso acts as a stepping stone or Indonesia’s urtherparticipation in creating ree trade areas with othercountries, in other regions.

THE BENEfITS Of INDONESIA’SPARTICIPATION IN CAfTA

Globalization is growing around the world. The rapid development o technology and inormationtranser surpasses national boundaries and increases international interactions. It allows nations to enhancecooperation among each another, creating new opportunities and possibilities. One o the actual orm o globalization is the creation o ree trade areas.

By: MAHESH DADLANI

First is a classic reason o all things: we’re

not ready yet. An ironic reality as the idea

o ree trade and globalizations have been

discussed since 2001, giving us a nine years

gap compared with its ormal launching

day: January 1st, 2010. But this statement itsel

came rom the mouth o The Trade Minister Mari

Elka Pangestu! She said that Indonesian industries

do not have right requirements to enter the

ree trade and some o them also to ace some

environmental issues that must be minimized

rst i we want to get a long with globalizations.

Second, most Indonesian industries possess

bad corporate governance: they reek o

corruption, manipulation, insider trading, and

other rauds. It’s not a good thing since ree trade

and globalizations demand good corporategovernance in every single industry with a rm

grip o airness, transparency, accountability,

and responsibility. According to a survey held

by McKinsey either, oreign investors are also

hesitant in investing their

money to a country having

lots o such bad practices

as they ear the risk. How

will Indonesia survive i all

bad sides o its industries

will later be exposed to

public and thus no oreign

investors want to invest their

money here?

Third, by entering the ree trade and

globalizations, we will ace a tough competition

with countries like China, with its mass-

production competency, Japan, with its Total

Quality Management (TQM) competency, and

South Korea, with its continuous innovation.

And here the problem lies: most o Indonesian

industries still have a moderate productivity,

quality, and innovation; they naeed a long time

to catch up with their perormance.

In summary, Indonesia is like a small y

among the giants concerning ree trade and

globalization: we are not competent enough

compared with them. However, it doesn’t mean

that we don’t have potential, we do. What should

be done quickly is exploring this p otential: on the

side o natural resources, we should have usedit wisely to be certain o its sustainability so that

they can support our industries or a long time;

on human resources, we should give them more

training to hone their skills and competences;

and on capital structure, we should encourage

Indonesian people to invest their spare money

into an Indonesian industry rather than save it in

a bank account and persuade the government to

support Indonesian industries, especially Usaha

Kecil dan Menengah (UKM) with more nancial

subsidies. What a hard way to take, but i we can

complete them all, we’ll be a giant too in a short

time.

INDONESIA INfREE TRADE ANDGLOBALIzATIONS:LIKE A fLY AMONGTHE GIANTS

i S P E A K u P

Talking about the implementation o reetrade and globalizations in Indonesia is liketalking about a double-edged sword: get it right and we’ll have an economic burst in notime, but get it wrong and we’ll ‘die’ without

a chance to resurrect even just or once. Why? There are several reasons that can be used todescribe this efect.

N

owadays, the phenomenon o

Indonesian youth in promiscuity is

increasing year by year. Based on

Badan Koordinasi Keluarga Berencana

Nasional (BKKBN)’s survey data, about

200.000 emale teenagers in West Java have

done abortion per year. Moreover, Pusat Keluarga

Berencana Indonesia (PKBI) stated, Indonesia has

reached 2.3 million abortion cases every year and

30% is contributed by teenagers. We can see one

o the causes rom the act that Western culture

has inuenced Indonesians especially youth’s lie

style such as ree sex beore marriage, abortion,

wild parties, hedonism, and else. The weakness

o norms and values in Indonesian people

(youth generation or example) has made them

no longer hold Eastern lie style; they become a

generation with no clues about what to do and

not to do also who just live by the ow. Many

youth think that being young is time or having

un and do anything as ree as they can because

they think lie begins in 30 something, not now.

On the other hand, some youth may have

dierent belies with “Western Era- generation”as I have mentioned above. They realize that lie

only happens once and youth should maximize

their lives by doing anything with good

purposes, even to make changes or others’

lie. Still, they have not got the adjust area or

medium to share ideas together, to discuss also

to give solutions about youth’s phenomenon,

and to bring changes to the world, especially

by youth movement. I there is any medium to

guide and to make youth movement, I am pretty

sure that youth can change their point o view

about living. Even they can bring changes to this

country and the world. This shows that youth are

not a problem; indeed they are solution.

The key is to involve as many youth as we

can. Government and the upper circle like

enterpreneurs, social workers, even educators

like teachers and school principles should

involve and motivate youth generation, not

underestimate them. For example, DPR’s

Commission or Youth should not only make

law or regulations or youth; they should also

make a big event whereas many youth can

involve in it nationally. They can have “I love

Indonesia” as the theme. Such event can show

Indonesia’s uniqueness and potential that might

have not been known or realized by Indonesian

youth. Maybe they previously only knew Batik

as Indonesian amous culture and Bali as the

greatest island in Indonesia. In act, Indonesia

have a great natural resources and beautiul

islands as well, like Rajaampat in Papua (which

is legally owned by Indonesia, but used and

cultivated by the Dutch and the Australian.

Youth is the uture o this country and the

world. I youth generation stand up together, I

believe they can make changes. I am certainly

sure that ISAFIS is the perect medium or youthmovement. They can share ideas together with

other youth rom oreign countries, exchange

dierent point o views with dierent cultures

around the world, and adjust the work style by

workorce diversity so that they can learn rom

the best. They also can learn another country’s

culture by having cross-cultural exchange such

as learning traditional music instruments and

local dances between countries. Indonesian

youth then would realize indirectly that their

country is actually a great country. Thus, by

standing up together with other youth around

the world, they can make changes!

Robert F. Kennedy stated, “this world demands

the qualities o youth: not a time o lie but a

state o mind, a temper o the will, a quality o

imagination, a predominance o courage over

timidity, o the appetite or adventure over the

lie o ease.”  I denitely agree with this perception.

As it has been widely known secret, this world is

always advancing towards globalization. Thereore,

in order to comply with globalization, people (youth

or oremost) need to be aware with how to deal

with humans worldwide. Youth need to learn that

in this global world, there are abilities that they

need to master such as communication skill to the

international community.

This communication skill could open up relations

rom all over the world. We should admit and agree

that nowadays people who master more than one

language would be easier to nd jobs or to interact

with people rom other countries. English is a very

important language to master but without good

communication skill, most o the knowledge will be

meaningless.

Youth in Indonesia sure have great desires,

dreams, and spirit to create better Indonesia. By

an organization like ISAFIS, youth can strengthen

and develop their communication skill. I really

believe that young generation is the relevant actor

or development because they have signicant

contribution to their amily, community, and society.

Discussion and inormation share about any kind o

issues with the government and Non-Governmental

Organizations will encourage and inspire the youth in

giving solutions due to their need o medium or skill

development. I also believe that youth in Indonesia

can be ‘the people’ who take real action to continue

and to maintain their country with their ideas, dreams,

spirits and passions. I believe that i youth can take

action, nothing is impossible.

Indonesian youth should have a wide perspective.  They must base their knowledge on the ull

consciousness that Indonesia is part o history and

global society dynamism. We have to maintain good

relations with our neighboring countries. Some

issues in other countries, to some extent, need our

consideration. We should be active in participating

in the international arena since we cannot simply live

alone.

Young people must also possess a multidimensional

perspective. Perspective is good or the youth in order

to understand that they cannot only think o their

own interests in absolute terms. Win-win solutions

are necessary to solve common problems. Some

aspects, like universal soul and multidimensional

consciousness, are indeed important or young

leaders in the uture. By having such consciousness,

they will be able to create a “more humane” society.

Thus, to build good international relations, I

believe three things are needed: belie, goodwill, and

idealism. Belie is the result o incessant dialogue and

mutual understanding. Also, along with the presence

o goodwill, cooperation and understanding among

countries are possible. The role o the young, with

their universal soul and multidimensional perspective,

is a necessary prerequisite. Ater all, young people do

have aspirations to be leaders in the uture.

Indonesia is a densely populated country and comprises with 17.508 islands. Within thisarchipelago, Indonesia reserves many heritages;

one o them is its youth live therein.

In his interview with Fareed Zakaria, he said he didnot want to ollow any prescriptions given by anytheorists and orces. He only wanted to implementhis own prescription that based on Singaporeaneveryday live.

So what prescription did he mean?  The most questioned question regarding to his

stances toward Singaporean lives is whether democracyis applicable or not in Singapore. He was so amous orhis critics upon the spread o America’s democracy byAmerican government. When Fareed Zakaria asked thisto him, he only said that America’s democracy is justundoable.

Singapore under Lee Kuan Yew has grown so ast inits economy, trade, and nancial lie, but not with itsdemocracy. People were banned to gather without policepermission. The political climate has been unriendly tothe opposition. All o these have resulted an enormousstability on its political lie and not orget to mention LeeKuan Yew’s People Action Party’s lie. For his opponent, his leadership has been the most criticized.

To respond these critics, he described what hecalled his prescription. He simply said that economicdevelopment was more important than democracy.

“First let’s get a decent livelihood, then we can talk about superior orm o government and democracy isthe superior orm o government,” he added.

Lee Kuan Yew later on explained about his intentionin building Singapore. First world oasis in the third worldcountry is what he had dreamed about to achieve what’snow Singaporean has enjoyed. Now Singaporean canenjoy all results which Lee Kuan Yew has strived or. A hugeamount o GDP, high level o economic development, agood system o education, a clean government, and lastbut not least, the modern city o Singapore.

All o these were achievedunder his leadership, despitethe critics that oten describehim as an authoritarian leaderwho doesn’t respect democracy. This gure has reminded me toFareed Zakaria’s thesis. He said,“An authoritarian leader whoserespect individual reedom ismuch better than a democraticgovernment who doesn’trespect individual reedom.”

At last, maybe the rightword to end this opinionarticle is that Lee Kuan Yew hasproven how succeed he wasin building Singapore with hisown prescription that basedon Singaporean lives. WhatMahathir Muhammad ever said,“A great leader is like a doctor, always listen to their peoplerather than do thing with theirown way”.

LEE KUAN YEWHis efort to build and to develop Singapore to be like now is something incredible. At thebeginning o this city-state, no one believed Singapore could progress into a giant economic and modern country. But now we can see how Lee Kuan Yew has turned those predictionsto be proved wrong.

“I wonder no signicance impact would

be brought by Obama’s coming except a

eeling or Indonesian that they are still

being remembered. The time he spent in

Indonesia or his visit which was less than

24 hours indicates that in act, Indonesia

was not that important or United States

o America, but maybe important or

Obama. I attempt to exclude Obama

rom USA because at the beginning o

his speech, I elt like he speech as an

“Indonesian” who just came back to his

hometown. However, in the middle o

his speech he came back to his nature

as a representative o USA. It was like

he opened his mask and talked as an

American especially when he talked

about economy. He said implicitly that

the amount o Indonesian people could

be a potential market or American

goods. He strongly urged a good tie in

economics cooperation, though overall

his speech was about Islam and USA.

 This indicates how important Indonesia

as their market. From this reality I try to

be realistic, seeing that actually we don’t

gain anything signicantly. His visit

sounds like nostalgia to him or maybe

his coming to Indonesia was merely as

one o his deeds to decrease his guilty

because he had delayed his visits three

times beore. Moreover, maybe what

ISAFIS got a chance to see Mr. Obama last November.

Some o ISAFISians have their own judgment about his speech.

also comrmed that there are plenty

things to do by Indonesian government

to enhance our participation in the

LuKMAN OESMAN – ISAFIS VICE

PRESIDENT

“What I noted rom his speech is

he highlighted on development,

democracy, and diversity in Indonesia.

He said Indonesia and America are

engaging comprehensive partnership

in all level, scope, and spectrum. Both

Indonesia and America have stake to

each other development: Indonesia as

the emerging market in Asia Pacic and

America as the standing economic power.

The growing middle class in Indonesia is

a potential market or American goods

as well as an alluring investment place.

He hoped that more and more people o

Indonesia could go to American school

along with the more people o America

to learn o Indonesia and gain more

intercontinental understanding.

Another thing is what I grateul

to be an Indonesian. I surely do not need

Barack Obama to tell that Indonesia is a

very amazing country with its diversity.

People with dierent religions, ethnics

group, and traditional language can stand

side by side and reinorce togetherness

to establish a sustainable development.

Its openness o press, embracement o

people aspiration, and inclusiveness are

the shared values across the archipelago.

And I eel this much clearer when I have

personal experience to travel to another

country and to eel that “Thanks God, I

am Indonesian!”

That day would be a memorable

day or the rest o my lie. I still can hardly

believe that Barack Obama was right in

ront o me and addressing the word

that shook the world instead o watching

his video sharing or universal hope o

change. He once again ignited me to

learn more and work hard my country.

I should nish my study in Indonesia to

deepen my basic o nationalities and

let me study abroad to broadening my

horizon. This is the time or me to take

the pillar o my generation. Yes, Sir, yes

we can. See you in America!”

INDAH gILANg PuSPARANI

USA tried to gain rom Obama’s coming

to Muslim World was because they need

to build a good name as a riendly state

to those countries. Thus, their trillion

dollars o business could be hold because

their business with investors rom Saudi

Arabia and other Muslim countries

would be sae. It would also gain USA

much. Hence, I want to emphasize here

that as Indonesian, we shouldn’t have

much euphoria or Obama’s visit. He still

brings the hegemony o USA though

maybe on the other side, he puts

himsel as a success “Barry” who was

  pulang kampong (coming back home)

and pledges to have Indonesia as their

partner not as oe.”

SRI REZEKI – PROJECT OFFICER OF

 JIMuN

“Unlike his Cairo speech that has been

adored by the global society, his speech

in Indonesia was not that adoring and

important on the substance. His speechin Jakarta was only talking about

Indonesia as a country but not as a part o

the world. When many called his speech

in Cairo as his message to the Muslim

society, his speech in Indonesia did not

show such thing, except the normative

one. This speech, or me, had shown the

less important role o Indonesia in global

society especially in Muslim world.

I democracy and Islam in Indonesia

is some kind o an image o modern

Islamic society, why does Obama never

use Indonesia as one o his connector to

the Islamic world instead o using it only

to campaign his understanding about

Islam to the Moslem world?

Then in Asia context, his word on the

important role o Indonesia in the Asia

Pacic region was something that he

Christiana Fieres (Secretar of the uNFCCC)

and Felipe Calderón (Mexican President)

Going back some days ago and rememberingmy personal highlights, I would like to talk abouttwo people that I had the opportunity to talk

to and who changed my perspective on theInternational ght against Climate Change.

First o all, as a part o the “Adopt A Negotiator”tracking team, we had the chance to meet thesecretary o the UN Framework Conventionon Climate Change (UNFCCC), Mrs ChristianaFigueres.

I must admit that she is a very nice, down toEarth woman. Born in Costa Rica, Figueres eelspassionate about her homeland being aected byclimate change.

There was a special moment on the chat wehad where I asked her what was her motivationin combating climate change. Her answer let mespeechless, as with tears in her eyes she said that

the main inspiration was “us, young people”.

She explained that she elt guilty or the planether generation is leaving to new ones, as everyday we have more species on extinction andpeople are dying because o human actions onthe planet.

Another great moment that will remain inmy mind was when I could ask a question in theplenary directly to Mexican President: FelipeCalderon.

I was nervous at the very beginning, when hechose me to talk and ask a question in ront o thenegotiators and ministers inside the place. Butthen, when I started speaking, everything seemedto make sense.

I asked the perspective o the president onyouth as activists and communicators, observersor leaders on ghting climate change at theconerence. I asked i our voices had been heard.

Being able to raise my voice, and representyouth voices that had been working with oraround me was very signicative or me. I receivedsome applauses ater giving my question, andnally, the president mentioned the importance o having youth as an inspiration or negotiators, andas a way on supporting and helping the process.

COP16 was a great experience but I will keep onollowing the process ater Cancun. I you would liketo know more about it do not hesitate to ollow meon twitter: @andrea_arzaba or read my posts at:

http://adoptanegotiator.org/author/andreaarzaba/

For several days I have been reading somenews that state or have stated that COP16 was a

ailure. Others take a bit more positive attitudes.

Personally, I think that Cancun was a key to

revive the negotiating process to combat climatechange, which means progress. Denitely: a

long and tiring process. It was my rst COP andI must say I learned a lot during the last two

weeks, perhaps much more than what I could

have learned immersed in books and news o the summit. I want to share some points that I

consider key to understanding a little more o thenal conclusions rom the climate summit:

The creation o dialogue and networking•

between government, NGOs, researchers,

journalists and observers was invaluable. All thesedierent perspectives enriched the process, all

voices were heard and I think mostly directedtowards the path o right action.

No international agreement was reached•

to replace the Kyoto protocol in this 2012, when it

ceases to be valid, but negotiators returned to runthe process and the negotiations were positive.

The text pressented by the end o the conerencementioned the creation o a green und to help

developing countries cope with the heat and putin place a mechanism to combat deorestation.

Important messages to civil society:•

the importance o acting locally, without waiting

or the delegates o each country to agree on adocument. Act Locally, Think Globally.

Personally, to ollow the steps to the•

delegation o Mexico made me realize theimportant role that took the country at this COP,

and the commitment it has made to combatclimate change. Moreover, its leadership hailed

by almost every nation, earned them the prize“silver lining” or the transparency provided in the

Cancun negotiations.

I really hope what Mexican negotiators stated

will become a reality, and I’ll be tracking downthese negotiators and key players, who have

shown exceptional work during the past t woweeks. Because it is now, ater the talks when real

work comes!
