お と も だ ち-otomodachi-

Otomodachi in Japanese share two words - Oto meaning sound and Tomodachi, meaning friend. Otomodachi is a set of speakers on wheels. Music that follows you. Providing adequate amount of sound only where you are, when you need it.

course objective:

Tomiaki

- The theme was “smart home products”. How technology can enhance scenarios and lead situations to “smarter” solutions.

- Each group were given personas to design for. My group was assigned Tomiaki; a 40-year-old radio producer from Osaka, Japan. It was our job to make this person come alive, hyper-exaggerating his whole being and then, identifying potential issues in his typical day.

360:

floor plan:

The moment he comes home from work, he turns his music on. Especially on a given day where he doesn’t go out, he enjoys streaming his tunes until he winds down.

However, living in a small apartment complex in the heart of Osaka city, he needs to be aware of his surrounding neighbors. It is out of his character to be inconsiderate and a nuisance to the people around him.

-playful purity-

design theme:

-sharp integrity-

geometric, durable, structured

How can he fully experience and enjoy his music but at the same time not disturb the peace?

the model:Otomodachi fits very nicely in Tomiaki’s life. It addresses his needs by reconciling his love for music and his respect for his neighbors.

The coaxial drivers capture both mid and high range sound frequencies, delivering a full, solid sound.

With infrared and bluetooth sensors, it tracks its user’s position via smart phone/tablet. Also with it, users can either stream their music playlist or tune in their favorite radio station seamlessly!

MEET “TONY”:AFTER SERVING FIVE YEARS IN THE US NAVY BACK IN 2002, TONY WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT OFF OF THE INTERSTATE 5.

AFTER WAKING UP IN THE HOSPITAL, DOCTORS TOLD HIM THAT HE WAS 99% DISABLED AND THAT HE COULD NEVER WALK AGAN.

HOWEVER, WITH HIS DRIVE TO BE THE 1%, HE TAUGHT HIMSELF HOW TO WALK BY WATCHING HIS ONE-YEAR-OLD SON LEARNing TO WALK.

TODAY, HE CAN NOT JUST WALK, BUT HE SURFS, SNOWBOARDS, PLAYS BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL, AND IS CURRENTLY THE FASTEST ADAPTIVE ROWER IN THE COUNTRY!

TONY is IN AN ADAPTIVE ROWING CATEGORY CALLED TAMIX2X ( TRUNK & ARMS MIX DOUBLE ).

REQUIREMENTS CONSISTS OF:- HAVING A PARTNER OF THE OPPOSITE SEX -FIXED SEATS/ UPPER BODY USE ONLY-1000 METERS distance

Like any race, the strategy is to start strong ( all out ), coast into a nice pace ( level out ), increase speed ( Pick-up ), and give all that is left at the last 100m ( all out ).

WHILE OTHER ROWING CATEGORIES HAVE AN APPOINTED PERSON TO KEEP CADENCE, TONY’S GROUP HAS NOTHING.

AS A TEAM SPORT, IF THEY AREN’T IN SYNC, THEY CAN’T WIN.

ROW AS ONE

MISSION:

HIS CURRENT SOLUTIONS ARE LISTENING FOR THE SOUND WHEN THE OARS RUB AGAINST THE OAR LOCKS AND ANTICIPATING HIS PARTNERS MOTIONS.

HIS CURRENT SOLUTION RESULTED IN HIS PARTNER BURNING OUT AT THE LAST 100M OF THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS LOSING THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE QUALIFIED TO GO TO THE 2012 OLYMPICS.

User interface:plan practice via smart device.tempulse syncs automatically via bluetooth.

Download olympic record for added motivation.

With built-in accelerometer and preset settings via smart phone/ tablet, the audio and visual cue flip-flops between the different sections of the 1000m distance. Starting with visual, then audio, back to visual, and both at the very end.

Tempulse will guide both partners to have a solid cadence in their strokes and tempo changes. When race day approaches, they’ll be set without having to rely on the product! And that their approach to the 1000m - All out, Level out, Pick-up, and All out will be energy & focus-efficient till the end.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: MEET SAM:AS THE LAST “THESIS” TERM OF MY BFA PROGRAM, WE HAD THE FREEDOM TO EXPLORE OUR OWN INTERESTS AND PASSIONS.

HOWEVER, THE PRODUCT COULD NOT BE LARGER THAN A 12”X12”X12” (INVISIBLE) CUBE.

MY INSTRUCTORS WERE KEEN ABOUT THE STUDENTS DESIGNING THE PROJECT AS A WHOLE AS WELL AS THE MINUTIA --- THE PRODUCT & THE PACKAGING. THE HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE.

GRIPS: SKETCHES:XTHERE ARE TWO MAIN GRIP TYPES: TRADITIONAL & MATCHED. TRADITIONAL GRIP IS POULAR IN MARCHING BANDS AND GENER’S LIKE JAZZ. WHILE MATCHED IS USED IN FASTER TEMPO, HEAVIER CATEGORIES LIKE PUNK AND ROCK AND EVEN METAL.

FOR THOSE REASON, I CHOSE TO PURSUE THE MATCHED GRIP TECHNIQUE DUE TO THE TYPE OF CONSUMER I AM ADDRESSING.

SKETCHES WERE THE RESULTS WHERE THE STICK COME IN CONTACT WITH THE HAND, REMOVING MATERIAL THAT IS NOT NEEDED. BUT STILL KEEPING IN MIND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO ALLOW DRUMMERS TO FEEL THE STICKS. AND HAVING ENOUGH MATERIAL ON THE HAND SO THE APPARATUS WILL NOT SIMPLY FLY OFF.

COMMON BLISTER POINTS ARE INDICATED WITH GRAY DOTS.

ANKR SPEAKS ON THE IDEA OF SOLIDITY, FOUNDATION, AND A SENSE OF GROUNDING. SOMETHING THAT ALL STARTING DRUMMERS NEED IN ORDER TO HAVE AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE ON THE KIT. ANKR’S MOLDED LEATHER PIECE SCULPTS THE HANDS IN THE ACCURATE MATCH GRIP POSITION AND THE SURROUNDING BREATHABLE MESH MATERIAL ENSURES A COMFORTABLE, SWEAT-FREE EXPERIENCE WHILE MAINTAING FEEL FOR THE DRUM STICK.
