O .T .C .— C A M P 1936.

T w o O fficers and nineteen C ad ets attended th eir annual O .T .C . Cam p, this year at Strensall, Y ork . An advan ce p arty o f one officer and three cadets went on the day previous to the arrival a f the m ain con tin gents. T h e m ain p arty arrived at S tren sall w ith baggage at about 3 p.m . on August 29th. T h e w eather seemed none too certain as the B u ry contingent, together w ith h a lf a dozen larger ones, m arched the m ile and a h alf from Stren sall S tation to the cam p.

i8 S c h o o l Y e a r B o o k , 1936.

Infectious diseases had brought the num bers at cam p down to barely tw o-th irds and the B rig ad e consisted of three B atta lio n s instead of four.

T h e first three days w ere spent in becom ing acclim atised and in and in platoon engagem ents. O n S atu rd ay afternoon a v isit to Y o rk w as arranged and a fair num ber of the contingent spent the tim e on the river or view ing the w alls and other ob jects of h istoric interest. O n the Sun day, being wet in the m orning, the usual C h u rch parade w as held in the recreation tent. T h e contingents were afterw ards inspected by S ir A lexander W ardro p , G .O .C . in C ., N . Com m and, and the C h ie f of the Im perial G en eral Staff, F ie ld M arsh al S ir C . D everell.

O n M ond ay m orning there w as a fire pow er dem onstration— alw ays a pop ular entertainm ent at cam p. O ne o f the new B ren G un s w as on view . T h ere w as a R . A. B a tte ry in action also, and a T an k dem onstration.

O n the T u esd ay , there w as a R .A .F . dem onstration in w h ich the p lanes sw ooped down on us to w ithin a few yards o f our heads w hile our jo b w as to fire back and repel them . T h e w hole w as an exercise to accustom us to attack b y air.

T h e re w as b oxing and a sing-song every night and a band playing earlier in the evening and, w hile in som e respects the w eather w as not all that it should h ave been, e veryb o b y enjoyed the eight days under canvas, and cam e aw ay feeling that a great deal had been learned

It m ight be as w ell to repeat here the rule that attendance at cam p is a necessary condition for any prom otion of a boy in the Corps.

A s there w ere not duties enough for two officers w ith one contingent, 2nd L ieu t. J. L . B agsh aw e attended a prom otion course w h ich he duly passed.

T w o C am p s w ere held during the year. O ne week at W hitsun tid e and n early three w eeks in A ugust.

T h e W h itsu n cam p w as one of the coldest and w ettest w e h ave ever experienced, but w hen the sun shone on the last tw o days, we were prepared to forget all about the d iscom fort of the beginning.

H ik in g over the h ills to vantage points w as m uch enjoyed, but C o lw yn B a y lost som e o f g lam our w ith the lack of its early visitors during th is period of cold and w et.

T reasu re hunts in the woods, and gam es on the sands w ere the pastim es, but bath in g could not find a p lace in our activities.

A lth o u gh the w eath er o f the Sum m er m onths cam e in for a great deal of criticism , our A ugust cam p o f n early three weeks boasted all fine w eather w ith the exception o f tw o wet days.

B o y s w ho tried cam p for the first time, w ere im pressed w ith the lo vely surroundings, but soon fell to the long, long trail so ab ly b lazed by old tim ers, and w ere delighted to be introduced to “ M a W illia m s’s ” w ho supplies an yth in g from lollipops to ice cream .

B a th in g w as very popular, and three of the b oys entered the open sw im m ing sports held at the R h o s Sw im m in g Pool. H ad th ey not th ought that the shortest w ay betw een tw o points w as a jo lly good curve, they m ight h ave beaten all com ers,

T H E D U K E O F Y O R K ’S C A M P , 1936.

A fter a long jou rn ey, apparently m ade sh orter by the thought o f our destination, our school contingent, both o f us, arrived in L o n d o n — half-an-hour late. T h is necessitated a hurried dash in a taxi across London to the “ R o y a l M e w s ” w here we w ere d ivided up into various sections under given letters. B efore proceeding fu rth er w e w ere taken through the royal stables, the groom sm en acting as our guides, after w hich w e set o ff across London under the supervision of our group leaders, to L iverp o ol Street Station , w here w e boarded a train, w hich anyone would h ave taken for a tin of sardines, w hen the four hundred had packed into it, and so set o ff for H alesw o rth , w h ich is the nearest station to S outhw old , w here the C am p is held.

O n arriv in g at H alesw orth w e took our final connection for South- wold, w hich was, for a change, a bus, and as H afesw orth C o rp oration had not sufficient o f these, on e h a lt o f th e party had to rem ain behind until the buses could con vey the other h a lf to cam p and return for them .

O n ce in cam p our first th ought w as supper, and after h avin g been satisfied in this direction, our next urgent desire w as for a bed. T h is w as supplied after a short entertainm ent in the form o f films. E ve ry night w e found our beds very w elcom e, and w e w ere even supplied w ith hot w ater bottles at night, but m ost o f the cam p d idn ’t seem to like this idea, since they took the form o f an earw ig or two.

Su n day brought w ith it rather w et w eather, but this did not disturb cam p life m uch, since we w ere p ra ctica lly left to our own devices after C am p P rayers, and the rest o f the d ay w as passed in discussing the rules of the tournam ents w hich were to follow during the rem ainder of the week.

M onday m orning saw the beginning of these tournam ents, the ch ie f of w h ich w as a gam e nick-nam ed “ F oot and M o u th ,” w h ich w as so rough that the question w as asked in C am p , “ w as the inventor o f F o o t aud M outh a sh irtm aker.” ? T h ere w ere m any oth er m inor gam es such as tug-of-w ar, h urdle racing, and putting-the-shot. T h e afternoons and the periods betw een tea and supper w ere free, but w ere m ore often than not spent in ch allen ge m atches betw een sections.

A fter supper the w hole cam p m ade a dash for the entertainm ent m arquee, the entertainm ents consisting o f turns given b y cam pers, and films.

T h e R ev . R . H yd e rehearsed and introduced the turns and co n sequently becam e one of the best known figures in cam p b y the end of the week. T h is w as the daily routine o f cam p for the rem ainder of the week.

24 S c h o o l Y e a r B o o k , 1936.

O n T u e sd ay afternoon our royal host, the D u ke o f Y o rk , visited us and stayed overnight until W edn esd ay afternoon. H is R o ya l H ighness follow ed the general routine o f the cam p, bathing w ith us and taking great interest in the gam es, and on leaving cam p he said how thoroughly he had enjoyed h is b rie f stay.

F rid a y jn ig h t, being the last night in cam p, w as a special one, A fter an extra long entertainm ent w h ich lasted until about 11-30 p.m ., the cam p m arched out to S outhw old Com m on, w here a huge cam p-fire w as lit, and the w hole cam p joined hands and sang “ A uld L an g S y n e .” Th en the night w as ended b y a strenuous pillow fight, after w hich m any had to spend the night w itho ut pillow s.

E a r ly on S atu rd a y m orning w e all departed for London, w here we fin ally dispersed, leaving, I am sure, h ap p y m em ories to 400 boys and th eir leaders, o f th eir w eek ’s stay at th is m agnificent cam p.
