NATIONAL BUSINESS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING Dear Colleagues, The NBEA Executive Board met on November 2-3, 2018, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile with an extensive agenda and challenging initiatives for discussion. Directors presented written and oral reports from their specific regions. A great deal of time was devoted to deliberating and examining membership and membership strate-gies/initiatives in terms of recruitment and retention. The 2019-2020 Strategic Plan was presented, deliberated upon and adopted. The fall membership campaign – NBEA Membership Renewal Campaign and Membership Videos - was launched to run during the month of November. Of note during the campaign was developing a “Recruitment” piece by each re-gion for posting on YouTube. The focus of the video is to bring an active and live message that our regional member-ship can identify with and motivate lapsed members to activate their membership. A major objective is to initiate and continuously strengthen a new and robust recruitment program to bring in new members and keep our current mem-bership engaged. The NBEA 2019 Annual Convention & Trade Show will be on April 16-20, 2018, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, a familiar location to all of us. All members are encouraged to attend and please make your room reservation early! The convention registration and housing information links are on the NBEA website. An area of concern discussed is finding volunteers to serve as Session Coordinators and Liaisons for scheduled presen-tations at the convention. A greater effort is needed to encourage members attending the convention to step forward and volunteer to serve, i.e., encouraging fellow members and friends to volunteer to serve, especially when the initial “Call Out” is sent out by the Convention Committee. The Business Education Research Conference (BERC) will be held during the convention. In addition, an NBEA Hall of Fame 2019 induction ceremony will be hosted during the convention. More information will be forthcoming.

Respectfully submitted, Dr. Hector Lopez Eastern Representative & Director, U.S. Chapter of ISBE Professor & Chair, Business Department Hostos Community College, City University of New York 718.518.6626 [email protected]

CLASSROOM TIPS

The end of the year generally finds people and businesses in a more generous mindset. They are more willing to

make donations. Have you considered creating a project for donors to choose to fund?

Donors Choose is an organization that aids educators with funding projects. Have you considered the idea of

taking students to see a business, event, or landmark that is outside of your area or even the country to learn

more about international business, politics, or history? If so, one of the barriers to implementing the idea is gen-

erally funding. Create a Donors Choose project. Then, take the students to see the world or event. Assist stu-

dents with seeing all of the international business aspects from the adventure.

Here are some links to aid with creating the project.

https://help.donorschoose.org/hc/en-us/articles/218977367-How-to-create-a-project-a-guide http://renovatedlearning.com/2014/09/29/5-tips-for-creating-donorschoose-projects/ http://ditchthattextbook.com/2015/03/20/12-tips-for-funding-classroom-projects-on-donors-choose/

Service learning is an opportunity to aid students with understanding other cultures, business mindsets, and

more. Service learning can help build character as well. There are many websites and ideas for service learning.

A word of caution – be sure the students and you will be covered in the event of an accident. Look into the liabil-

ity for the project. Check out these links for service learning.

2019 Call for Proposals: Workshops, Presentations and Posters

91st SIEC-ISBE International Conference Kefalonia, Greece

July 28 – August 2, 2019

C ONFERENCE THEME: “Diversity in Business Education.” Diversity is a broad term, but as educators apply it to Business Education,

more focus is possible. The 2019 SIEC Conference Committee would like to emphasize how diversity can bring people together—students, workers, educators, business managers, consumers, etc., and with a better under-standing of diversity as it exists today, learning from each other is proba-ble—with greater preparedness for the future.

Diversity is a powerful force that is shaping business currently since we are moving more and more into the global exchange of products, ideas, and business contracts. Some ideas follow:

How does the next generation of working life cope with a globalized world of uncertainty, changing work demands, struggle for sustainable businesses, climate instability?

How can we focus on value creation? How do we encourage powerful self-directed learning and innovative

ways of thinking and learning? How can schools and businesses learn to capitalize on the business

opportunities created by diverse populations, workforces and mar-kets? Businesses can learn how to hire and retain diverse employees or find themselves without enough workers to keep their operations run-ning.

How do we as educators fit into this need? Do educators promote di-versity in their classes and in their faculties?

How can we be better leaders and examples in preparing for the global workforce and its requirements?

Cultural diversity, age diversity, gender diversity, cross-cultural train-ing, innovation prospects--because of broad-based international busi-ness contacts—all present opportunities for everyone involved. Re-search on the many facets of diversity and a review of best practices provide a varied field of study.

Migration is also a key element triggering greater diversity. Not only ethnic minorities, but older workers, women, members of religious minorities, and workers with disabilities are some types of diversity where we may find training needs.

Conference formats Members are encouraged to submit research-based proposal and/or prac-tice-based proposals that support learning and teaching. Practice-based proposals may explain a project or activity that is valuable to the classroom teacher. Presenters should also focus on the interaction with the audience
