    PART 1 (2 minutes)

    I: City & Guilds International Spoken ESOL Test, Communicator level, (give todays date). (NB This introduction only needs to be recorded before the first candidates test begins, not for

    subsequent candidates.)

    (Give candidates name.) Test begins. Hello. My names (give full name). Can you spell your family name for me, please?

    C: (Spells family name.)

    I: Thank you. Where are you from?

    C: (Responds.)

    I: Thank you. Now, in the first part of the test Im going to ask you some questions about yourself and your ideas. All right? (Choose up to five questions, one from each of the different topic areas, as time allows. Name the topic; eg Now, Technology.)

    Topics

    Health and fitness

    What are the benefits of going to a fitness club? Do you prefer watching or taking part in sport? Why? How healthy is peoples lifestyle in your country? Do you believe your area has enough sports facilities? Why (not)?

    Technology

    How important are computers in your life? Are there any gadgets you couldnt do without? How often do you use the internet? What for? How has technology changed the way we spend our free time?

    Work

    What are your criteria for choosing a job? What is more important for you, job satisfaction or money? Why? Does school prepare you adequately for a working life? Why (not)? Would you consider going abroad to work? Why (not)?

    Entertainment

    What forms of entertainment are available for people your age in your area? Is it possible to have a good time without spending a lot of money? Why (not)? How do you like to celebrate special occasions? Why? Do young people have enough free time for entertainment these days?

    Languages

    Is it better to study a foreign language at school or to learn it in the country where it is spoken? Why?

    What sort of activities have helped you learn foreign languages? What can you do outside the classroom to help you improve your foreign language skills? How useful do you think it would be to have only one international language?

    PART 2 (2 minutes)

    I: Now, Part Two. Im going to read some situations. I want you to start or respond as necessary. First situation (choose one situation from A).

    A Were friends. I start.

    Would you like to go to the cinema this weekend?

    Im your new next door neighbour. I start. Im new in this town. I was wondering if there are any good fitness centres nearby.

    Were classmates. Our teacher gave us a project to do for homework. I start. So, would you like to be my partner for the project?

    Were colleagues at work. I start. So, what do you think of the new office building?

    C: (Responds.)

    I: (Role-play the situation with the candidate approximately two turns each.)

    I: Second situation (choose one situation from B).

    B Im your boss at work. I have just asked you to work overtime all this week but you have English

    classes every Tuesday and Thursday after work. You start.

    Were strangers on the train. My mp3 player is too loud and it is annoying you. You start.

    Were friends. I want to borrow your very expensive new camera for the weekend but you know I dont look after the things I borrow. You start.

    Were neighbours. You are going on a business trip and want me to water your plants while youre away. You start.

    C: (Initiates.)

    I: (Role-play the situation with the candidate approximately two turns each.)

    I: (Role-play a third situation from A or B if time allows.)

    I: Thank you.

    PART 3 (3 minutes)

    I: Now, Part Three. In this part of the test were going to discuss something together. I have some ideas and you some different ones. All right? (Hand over candidates task sheet.)

    Its our friends birthday next month and we are thinking of organising a surprise party for him. Lets talk about our plans and make some decisions. Take twenty seconds to think about what you want to say. (20 seconds.) Why dont you start?

    FOOD AND DRINKS: just snacks and soft drinks

    MUSIC: hire professional DJ

    INVITATIONS: send invitations by email

    INVITATIONS: invite people personally and tell them to keep it a secret

    MIKES PRESENT: collect money from everyone so we can get him the new mobile phone he wants

    PART 4 (3 minutes including follow-up questions)

    I: In Part Four you are going to talk on your own for about one and a half minutes. Your topic is (choose topic for candidate).

    B A holiday you will never forget.

    C The ideal school.

    I: First, think about it for thirty seconds and make some notes if you want. (Hand over piece of paper and pen/pencil.) So your topic is (repeat topic). All right? (Withdraw eye contact for thirty seconds. Leave tape/CD running.)

    I: (Candidates name), please start.

    C: (Talks for about one and a half minutes.)

    I: (Choose follow-up questions.)

    Follow-up questions

    The best present youve ever received.

    On what occasions do you give and receive presents in your country? Do you enjoy giving or receiving presents more? Why? Is the best present always the most expensive one? Why (not)? Have you ever received a present you really hated?

    A holiday you will never forget.

    Where do you usually like to go on holiday? Why? Do you like to plan a holiday carefully or to be spontaneous? What kind of things can spoil a holiday for you? Why do you think some people prefer not to go away on holiday?

    The ideal school.

    What is more important in a school, the building or the people who work there? Do you believe school should prepare students for a working life? In what ways? How can the school benefit from the advances in modern technology? Do you think there is a place for discipline in todays schools? Why (not)?
