Mridanga Lessons

Dates: 26th June - 28th AugustIndividual Price: £100.00 Facilitator: Bhakta Krishna ChaitanyaTime: Thursdays, 6.30 pm - 8.30 pm

The mridanga had its advent nearly five hundred years ago around the mid-1400s when Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared on Earth. It is said that the mridanga is Lord Krishna’s flute incarnated, and also an expansion of Lord Balarama, on earth. When Lord Krsna

was planning for His descent as Lord Caitanya, His flute wanted to accompany Him. Lord Krsna said that the flute would not be a practical medium of carrying the spiritual vibrations around. Hence, the mridanga came to existence as a drum that is nice and loud, and easy to play. Since then, Bengali music and Gaudiya Vaisnava kirtans have been blessed with this avatar of the flute of Sri Krishna.

Journey of Self Discovery

Date: 16th June - Saturday 21st JuneTime: 6.30pm – 8.30pm Individual Price: £20.00

Have you ever wondered what exactly is ‘happiness’ and why we see it so often advertised, but rarely experienced? Or have you ever thought of who exactly is God and can we really see Him? What about the tragedies that strike good people - ‘why do bad things happen to good people’? The path of yoga is confusing - is there an easy explanation on what is meditation and yoga? Who exactly am I and how can I transcend bodily and mental limitations and experience unending spiritual bliss?

If you have ever had these questions, you are on the right page. The ‘Journey of Self-discovery’ is a 6-session course that answers all the above questions and more. The course is designed to take you systematically from the basics of spiritual life, to answering deeper philosophical questions about God, love and happiness.

Transformation Through Forgiveness

Dates and times: Friday 27th June 6.30pm - 9.00pmSaturday 28th June 10.00am – 6.00pm Individual Price: £20.00 Facilitator: HG Mahatma dasa

The Opening of Closet Krishna

A couple of years ago, Bhaktin Nikki Ellis had an idea - she had been managing charity shops for various organisations for some time, but had a desire to open a charity shop for ISKCON.

“We presented the idea to Jai Nitai dasa and others, and everyone thought it would be a great idea to raise money for the London temple, and not only that but it would be a place within the community where local people could be engaged in the service of Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara in a variety of ways, through donating goods, volunteering to work in the shop and also helping with various programmes that could be organised depending on the premises acquired and the facilities that were available. It would also be great place to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books and would also serve as a preaching centre.

We started to look for a suitable shop, and finally after some let downs and refusals, Krishna provided us with a suitable property, in a great position on the High Street in Rochester.

On the 2nd June a yajna was performed at the premises which was well attended and we were blessed to have HG Pankajangri dasa join us for the event.

Closet Krishna opened the next day and since then the reaction and feedback has been quite amazing and really encouraging. Already we have many people volunteering to help with the shop and programmes, and donations are starting to come through. 70 people have already signed up for the e-mail newsletter and information we are regularly sending out regarding courses and sanga’s coming up at the premises. On Friday the 14th June we will start a regular Friday evening Bhagavad Gita

sanga, with a good response from people who want to attend.

We are inspired and grateful for the help, encouragement and support of the Vaishnava’s who have helped us to make this idea into a reality, and we look forward to trying to serve Guru and Gauranga and bring Krishna Consciousness to the people of Rochester and Kent.”

Bhakta Mark and Bhaktin Nikki.

APPEALS Closet Krishna welcomes all donations of clothes (particularly ethnic), toys, bags, games, bric a brac, pictures and statues, murtis etc, CDs, DVDs, books or devotional paraphenalia.

We have rooms available on the premises that could be used for devotees practising alternative therapies. Please contact Bhakta Mark or Bhaktin Nikki at [email protected]

Ladies SangaFor ladies looking to strengthen their spiritual search and practice in the welcoming company of other ladies, a team of devotees (Akarsini Radhika devi dasi, Jaga Mohini devi dasi and Bhaktin Narada) lead a fortnightly program which acts as an informal introduction to Krishna Consciousness for beginners, or as a bonding session for those who are already walking steadily the path of devotional service.

What’s the format? The program starts at 6pm with a half hour maha mantra bhajan. Then a guest speaker is given approximately an hour to share their knowledge/realisations about a chosen topic, with opportunity for questions and answers, followed by group japa chanting and kirtan before sumptuous prasadam is distributed. The group is also treated to dramas, dramatic readings and improvisations to increase the joy of practising Krishna conscious activities and meditations together.

Any Group Outings? We take trips occasionally to the beautiful grounds of Bhaktivedanta Manor. Our recent trip there was to for a special ladies evening program with HG Mother Malati speaking about her memories of Srila Prabhupada!

When and where? The Radha Krishna Temple, seminar room (3rd floor), every second Friday from 6.00pm to 8.00pm

Who to contact?Radhika 07883823006

Testimonials

“ I have been attending for over 1 year, or 2 years. I enjoy the discussion of topics where we all can contribute and help each other. I would recommend Ladies Sanga to those interested in spiritual topics and want to learn about Krishna with a supportive group of people !”

“I’ve been going to the ladies since February 2012. My highlights: I have been inspired to sing the maha mantra and to learn the philosophy in a very nice didactic way. I would highly recommend Ladies Sanga because is a very inspiring and encouraging program for the development of a higher taste for Krishna consciousness.”

“I have been attending regularly for about one year now. Initially, the main reason I came was the warm welcome I received at the Temple and then the association with devotees. These sessions inspired me to take up Krishna consciousness more seriously. Some devotees who organise ladies sanga became very close friends who inspired me to chant regularly and increase my rounds and gave me opportunities to do services at the Temple. Their guidance and support have helped me get a more positive outlook on life. I would definitely recommend to others - I have introduced Ladies Sanga to another friend and do encourage others (eg: newcomers to the Temple) to attend the sessions.”

Men’s Friday Programme

Friday nights. What a conundrum they pose. Especially here in London! So much to choose from to celebrate the waning week of work and studies! Clubbing down the road? Pub trawl into the night? Film première in Leicester Square? Conquests through melancholic cobbled London alleyways?

Well there’s another kind of conquest in town. And as cheesy as that sounds, if you’re suffering from an unsettlingly blasé disposition toward the ‘scintillating’ options we so helpfully outlined above, then you may as well check out the scene down at Soho Street on a Friday night. You might be pleasantly surprised! For the more sober minded amongst you readers, please disregard the cheesy sales pitch above. What follows is a more mature description of this event held every week at ISKCON London.

What’s the point of it?To openly and honestly investigate the applicability, practicality and value of the philosophy and practice of Krishna consciousness in a realistic modern setting.

Who’s it for?Students, young professionals, those recently introduced to the process of Krishna consciousness. Also, for the avoidance of doubt, the men’s Friday programme is for the male attendees. Rumour has it there is also a female counterpart to this programme trying to steal our thunder. That’s fine, once they don’t steal our dinner...

Why is there gender segregation? To facilitate exploration of delicate topics that may be embarrassing in more open groups. While most events at the Temple are open to everyone, these Friday programmes were initiated to meet the requests of those visitors or newcomers who desired a more private and less formal setting than traditional temple programmes.

What’s the format?Kicks off with free dinner at around 7pm. Followed by either an open discussion, specific themed discussions, interactive presentations or discourses on specific aspects of the philosophy and practice of Krishna Consciousness, or a ‘no holds barred’ Q&A session. Closes with kirtan (musical mantra meditation).

Any group outings?Occasional retreats to the idyllic spiritual oasis out in the Green Belt of London and donated by George Harrison, the Bhaktivedanta Manor. Or if we’re too lazy, down to the Thames.

Where and when?First at Govinda’s restaurant for dinner. Which we usually collect and take up to the Radha Krishna Temple seminar room (3rd floor).

Who to contact? Bhakta Shiv (07938 994 773)

Testimonials

“I’ve attended 3 sessions. I find the philosophical conversation very interesting. It’s very open and you feel safe to ask whatever you like. I would recommend it to people on any level of understanding of Krishna consciousness. You can get something meaningful out of it, even if you’re just starting out. And of course the kirtan feels great!”

“I have been attending the programme for the past year. I was a little apprehensive about coming to the Temple, especially because I come from a Muslim background, but after reading the books by Srila Prabhupada I was very impressed by the deep philosophy of the Vedas. The amicable and peaceful nature of the devotees allowed me to question all aspects of the scripture and I received answers which were free from religious dogma. As a result I have formed good relations with members of different faiths and backgrounds and have also generated a better understanding of the religion I grew up in. I recommend this programme to anyone who is open minded and is searching for the truth in all facets of life.”

Temple Open DayThe Temple held an Open Day on Saturday 24th May, with the theme of the day the same as the previous month’s - ‘The Power of Sound’. A presentation of this topic was facilitated by Krishna Kirtana dasa, and questions and answers was facilitated by HH Keshava Bharati Dasa Goswami Maharaja. This month we included an interactive session on mantra meditation – japa and kirtana – which was led by Jai Murari dasi. The day was well attended, with a recorded number of 66 visitors. The Open Day was in the middle of a Sankirtana sprint, which was focused on Vegetarianism due to it being World Vegetarian Week. The book ‘Higher Taste’ was the focused book to distribute.

Celebrating 45 Years This year we will be celebrating 45 years of ISKCON London! Each newsletter this year will feature a special article about Their Lordships and our London Temple.

Last month we featured Mother Mondakini’s memories of Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara, and serving at Bury place. Here is a continuation of this morning class, given on Monday 28th April, where Mother Mondakini is remembering the ‘kidnapping’ of Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara by Srila Prabhupada.

Mother Mondakini lovingly told of how Mother Yamuna devi was given some brass Radha Krishna deities from a lady. Mother Yamuna told Srila Prabhupada, ‘we have some Radha Krishna deities we are going to worship for the opening of the Temple’ and Srila Prabhupada said ‘no no, give back these deities, that lady, she actually wants to steal you from me... do not worry, Krishna will come’.The day of opening was already fixed! Then one Indian man told the devotees he had some beautiful Radha Krishna deities that Srila Prabhupada might want to see.

When they reached the house, Srila Prabhupada didn’t look at Them much at first - he began small talk with the gentleman about his family, children, their education. After a while, Srila Prabhupada just said ‘this is all right, we’ll take Them.’ The man was quite puzzled - he may have expected to sell Them! Srila Prabhupada told the devotees to carry Them to the van straight away. They look the deities to the van, and the man was following, but they were too quick for him. Srila Prabhupada said ‘drive!’ Then when far, Srila Prabhupada said ‘now you stop’. He bowed down, offered the Brahma Samhita prayers with tears in His eyes, and Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara made Their appearance in London. They were actually kidnapped by Srila Prabhupada!

Boris Johnson’s Ratha Yatra Message

“I am enormously pleased to send my best wishes to all celebrating Ratha yatra in London on 1 5 June. This wonderfully colourful festival, winding its way through some of our most famous streets before reaching its destination at the heart of London in Trafalgar Square, will be a treat for devotees and visitors alike.

I wish the event and its organisers on the Ratha yatra Committee every success.”

Nrsimha CaturdasiOn Tuesday 13th May 2014 we celebrated appearance of Lord Nrsimha at the Temple. This year we were very fortunate to have HG Kripamoya Prabhu lead ecstatic Guru Puja and kirtan. He also gave morning Srimad Bhagvatam class which began with prayers to Nrsimhadeva composed by Bhaktivinoda Thakur, followed by reasons for the appearance of Sri Nrsimhadeva.

In the afternoon, a large Harinam party went out on the streets of central London and returned around 3pm for abhiseka. This year, elaborate bathing was performed amidst chanting of the Nrsimha Kavaca mantra.

Evening class was given by HG Tribhangananda dasa and HG Jai Nitai dasa. Sandhya Arati kirtan was led by HG Totagopinath dasa, and at 7:30pm we served break fast feast prasadam to more than 300 devotees.

At 9pm HG Radha Londonisvara dasa and HG Sundar Nitai dasa led Sayana Arati kirtan, and devotees danced in ecstasy until midnight.

A New Temple: April 2014 Update

Dear Friends and Well Wishers,

You have no doubt heard about our campaign to collect 10,000 names to assist in requesting land in Regents Park for a new temple for the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).Following the launch of the campaign at our 44th Anniversary Event in November 2013, so far we have approximately 2,500 signatures. Although the collection of signatures has not been happening as fast as anticipated, we are working hard to encourage all friends and well wishers of ISKCON to take part. We humbly request you to please continue to inform all your family and friends about the campaign and encourage them to sign up. This can be done using the following link: www.londontemple.co.uk

You will also be interested to know that we have recently formed a New Temple Committee who are meeting regularly to discuss all issues regarding building a beautiful new temple for Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara and Their growing community of devotees.

Our bold request of requiring land in Regents Park is in pursuit of Srila Prabhupada’s instructions to his disciples when he was personally present in London, but we are also taking into consideration that Srila Prabhupada was very pragmatic in his plans to spread Krishna Consciousness. In this regard, Srila Prabhupada was also requesting his disciples to consider other locations in London for a temple should Regents Park not be available. Our New Temple Committee is thus also pursuing this same mood.

Other issues we are discussing at present includes the timing of our campaign, especially in consideration of the magnificent Temple of Vedic Planetarium (TOVP) which is now being built in Sri Dhama Mayapur. In order to ensure its speedy completion, the leaders of ISKCON are requesting that all other major projects are put on hold until it’s opening.

In the meantime, we are therefore continuing to build up a team of committed devotees who are presently working on the design and strategy of a new temple in London. It’s a big project and requires careful planning along with patience and determination. In our next news update we hope to show you a proposed initial design of the new Temple. So stay tuned for that.

We are open for feedback and welcome any questions that you might have as well any way that you feel you can assist. Please get in touch with us at [email protected]. We also request that you continue to encourage others to sign our petition. If the request for land in Regents Park is not accepted we will greatly value taking your signatures as positive support for a new Temple for Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara in central London.Thanking you in advance for your support.

Your servant,

Murli Manohara dasaOn behalf of the New Temple Committee
