EDITOR’S NOTE

Half way already through 2014 and we have been our every busy

productive selves, taking Karate and martial arts to a whole new level.

Pushing ourselves and pulling through. Why you may ask though do we

continue to enjoy such success? With all the hardships we face in our daily

lives, in a society, so far relatively unappreciative of our endeveour? Some

may say commitment, true! But it takes more than commitment to be

productive, discipline you may add, true too! Who can argue… but if I

were to quote YAGUCHI SHIHAN I would say strong foundations, I would

say don’t save technique… the embodiement of the core principles of

Shotokan Karate-do.

As we prepare for the upcoming Regional Team Kata & Kumite Tournament this

October, our message to students is to keep training, keeping in mind ‘strong

foundations’ for proper stance and posture. So on this note a gentle reminder to all

that Friday classes at Sacre Couer Hombu Dojo have been selected for holding

competitor training and judging clinics! Do your best to join, the experience is added

value for all especially now that the October competition is closing in.

Within the next few months we will be re-launching our Facebook page and migrating

from the Facebook group to get bigger exposure. Having said this, for anyone having

any videos or pictures from our past events, they are kindly requested to pass them on

to the marketing committee.

Thank you for your contributions to this issue and best of luck to you all in the Regional

Tournament!

PRESS RELEASES Kokushokuren ISKF Lebanon – 14th Annual Gasshuku Karate Seminar The Kokushokuren ISKF Lebanon has hosted, under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of Japan in Lebanon, Yaguchi Shihan, 9th Dan, ISKF Technical Committee Chairman, to give its 14th annual Gasshuku on traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate-Do. The seminar was sponsored by Optimum Invest, 22 Degrees, Climate Technology, and Nour Artisanat. And held at Champville – Dik El Mehdi from July 13 thru 19 for all ages. On this occasion though, Kokushokuren ISKF Lebanon shares an excerpt from Yaguchi Shihan’s memoirs, spawned from over 65 years of practicing the art, – ‘Mind and Body Like Bullet’ – on the importance of commitment to succeed no matter the circumstances in such a rigorous disciplinary art: ‘I believe many people started Karate while Sensei Funakoshi was instructing because they wanted to be like him. They saw him training when he was still relatively young, saw how amazing he was, and they wanted to be able to do what he could do. He was known to be very fast, although he rarely sparred. This group of people idolized him, and I think maybe they became too dependent upon him. They became quite confused and lost after his death. Some quit training. I found it interesting that after all the dedication to Karate and training, they couldn’t continue after the master passed on.

About a month after the funeral, we held a Sensei Funakoshi Memorial Demonstration in the Ryogaku Memorial Hall. The term enbu-kai literally means demonstration club, it was held as a memorial and demonstration by all of the Karate clubs of different styles.

Many martial artists turned out to honor Sensei Funakoshi’s memory at this enbu-kai. In all, it was attended by about 8,000 people. Practitioners from each style performed demonstrations: Wado, Goju, Shoto-kai, Shotokan, Shito. Masters Nakayama, Ito, Nishiyama, Sugiura, Kanazawa, Mikami and I represented the Shotokan style. Sensei Okazaki couldn’t participate because his knee was broken at the time (in fact, it took a year for his knee to heal), but he watched. We demonstrated kumite (sparring), kata, and basic techniques, as did all of the demonstrators of all the other schools. I was a third degree black belt at the time, but I felt I didn’t compare with any of those masters. As the Japanese saying goes, I felt like a frog that lives in a well and never knows the ocean.’

Spreading the Art (extracted – from his book ‘Mind and Body Like Bullet’)

When Sensei Yaguchi first arrived in the United States, he spent a little time in California, and was then sent to Denver to teach and train. After eleven months of near starvation and frustration in Denver, he asked to return to Japan. Instead, he was sent back to California, where he spent the next six years as Sensei Nishiyama’s assistant. He was appointed the coach for the American team for the 1972 World Tournament.

Born in 1932 in Hiroshima, Japan, Sensei Yaguchi began Karate training in 1952. He tested under Master Funakoshi for his first and second-degree black belts. As one of the first graduates of the JKA Instructors Training Program, he has played an important role in the growth of American Karate, the internationalization of Shotokan Karate and the founding of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF).

In its issue dated Monday, 28 July 2014, Annahar Newspaper posted an exclusive two-‐page interview with Yaguchi Shihan. The interview conveyed his message on the importance of Karate-‐do as a way for the individual to: resolve personal internal conflicts; vanquish prejudices; develop their character; and find inner peace. That being said, he added that Karate-‐do is an important medium for Lebanese at large thru which they can overcome their differences and practice greater respect and tolerance towards one another. Finally Yaguchi Shihan praised ISKF Lebanon on their perseverance to promote Karate-‐do in the country despite continuous social and security concerns.

BUDO SPIRIT EVERYDAY… EVEN IN FOOTBALL!!!!

The first picture shows the Japanese players bowing after the game, and like Okazaki Shihan says in his book: “Bowing is a symbol of humility, bowing conveys respect for the self and respect for the opponent and what we do is who we are.” “Karate is not only dojo training”. This Niju Kun is explained in the 2nd picture where we see a cleaning or soji done by the Japanese spectators after the end of the football game. It is truly an example of how Karate spirit must be practiced inside and more important outside the dojo. From practicing Karate-do we learn not only technique but as we see in these pictures the true culture behind this Japanese martial art.

Discussion with Yaguchi Shihan During Yaguchi Shihan’s visit to Lebanon this summer, we’ve had the opportunity to discuss Karate with him, which revealed the depth of his Budo convictions and his rooted faith in the “path” or Karate-Do: He started Karate at 18 (which means more than 60 years of Karate experience!..). He was a shy youth, needed to be more focused and looking to become strong.

But what we learned from Yaguchi Shihan during these discussions went beyond those simple facts. He expressed, in his struggling English, his bright yet simple concepts, such as the best way in his opinion, to promote Karate.

According to Yaguchi Shihan, one must first and foremost show nice techniques and good performance for everyone to see and I quote: “good and serious Karate, like when the children repeat good Dojo Kun; it is good”.

The audience must see good manners, good concentration and good performance; in this aspect, martial arts differ from sports; it is first and foremost about manners, then comes the performance.

Presentations and tournaments are good promotion means as well. Volunteering to teach persons in need and participating in social events is yet another good way to promote Karate. Yaguchi Shihan said that we need to give more and more attention to children, then their brothers and sisters will join training.

On another note Yaguchi Shihan talked about the future of the ISKF worldwide, which he sees as ever growing. As he said, Okazaki Shihan (ISKF Chief Instructor) is always looking forward for the next world tournament, the next camp, etc ... He believes ISKF

has good instructors who follow the true teachings and principles of Master Gichin Funakoshi’s Karate-do.

On a local level, Yaguchi Shihan expressed his satisfaction regarding the good level of the ISKF Lebanon group where you can find “nice manners and good instructors” and where “spirit and operation is good“; he advised the students to elaborate on footwork, to move smoothly and to have more body weight control… He believes that “One shouldn’t save energy in punching, kicking, and stances. One needs to complete the techniques. Kata is a display of techniques and is different from application, in Kata we need to have good foundation.”

Le Karaté et Moi de Séréna Nour AbdulSater

Tout a commencé lorsque mon père a voulu que mon frère et moi pratiquions les Arts Martiaux. Nous nous sommes renseignés et avons découvert qu’il y avait un club de Karaté tout près de chez nous: le Kokushokuren ISKF Club, Sahel Alma.

J’avais sept ans lorsque mon frère et moi nous sommes inscrits. J’ai tout de suite aimé cette discipline, et me suis faite de nouveaux amis Karaté-kas qui sont devenus très rapidement comme une seconde famille.

Avec le temps j’ai appris à mieux me concentrer, me défendre, ne pas être timide, travailler individuellement et en équipe. Chaque entrainement m’apprend de nouvelles

choses: comment perfectionner mon caractère, être fidèle, me surpasser, respecter les autres, m’abstenir de toute conduite violente et," tenez-vous bien", j’apprends même à parler le Japonais.

J’aime beaucoup mon Club, mes amis Karaté-kas, et mes Senseis: Sensei Ghaith, Sensei Sélim et Sensei Hala, je les remercie pour tous leurs efforts, leurs encouragements, leur patience et je leur promets de faire toujours de mon mieux pour être une championne.

WHY KARATE? By Jocelyne Jade

For many practitioners, Karate is a deep philosophical practice. But for my husband, my twin boys and I, Karate teaches ethical principles because of its discipline. Regardless of age, we started to practice Karate as a family in April 2013 seeking for self-perfection, self-defense and sport.

Why Karate? There are a million ways to answer this question. When some people think of Karate or more generally martial arts, they imagine a violent sport based on conflict and aggression. Nothing could be farther from the truth, at least for the true Karate that we practice at JCC Dojo, ISKF with Sensei George Moussan. Actually to answer the above question, I have seven reasons to trigger my interest in Karate besides trying something different: Self-Defense, Fitness, Confidence, Coordination, Focus, Discipline. In conclusion, to master Karate, in all the above-mentioned reasons you need time as anything that’s worthwhile.

Point of View By Nabil BouMalham I am a newcomer to martial arts. I practice a modified Karate program to accommodate my visual impairment. My participation confers many physical and psychological benefits. The program has been an exercise in body awareness. Performing conscious, controlled movements improves my balance, coordination, and joint integrity. It is an excellent way to keep fit and improve general mobility and physical functioning. In addition to body consciousness, training requires consciousness of others and the environment. This skill in orientation extends nicely to daily functioning.

Participating in a martial art in a supportive environment benefits my self-confidence and well-being. This benefit is due to the stress-relieving effect of exercising, the sensation of improved physical fitness, and the sense of overcoming limitations imposed on my activity by my visual impairment.

In conclusion, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to my instructor Hala Zoghbi for her ongoing commitment to making her craft more accessible. It has been a privilege to be a part of this process.

Have you ever wondered or brought your awareness onto your being? What you represent? No… not to others but to your own self… your own values… your own principles???

What are your responsibilities? Your prime and initial responsibilities…

They all lie within finding happiness… YOUR happiness. Your own happiness… your sole and only responsibility is to find that equilibrium between your mind, heart and soul.

Allowing them to be happy and content. Satisfied. Allowing yourself to be happy emotionally, mentally, intellectually.

Being in total control of your life, always listening to your own true inner voice and seeking wisdom from your higher self… Seek your higher self and listen… listen with your heart and soul and let your mind heart and soul follow its lead… listen to it as it will never fail you.

It knows what words will resonate inside of your soul making the changes, adjustments and giving you the confirmations you so deeply seek… “Be your own author, The Author of the best script of your life…” “Be your best reader. Enjoy what you wrote…”

Never betray yourself by saying I should have, I could have… Today you are wiser and more knowledgeable than you were yesterday. You may not take the same decisions today as you did yesterday… Yesterday you were in a different situation. Today that situation is obsolete… you matured. You have another experience… Thus thank all your “negative experiences” They were all here for you to learn, they are literally your learning experiences…

The dojo kun and the niju kun are outlines and you find your needs through them to obtain and maintain that wisdom and philosophy. Training… may be hard, is hard when your mind is not in tune with your body and the Karate philosophy. Is hard to keep your mind focused on the exercise and the stances which you so much want to bring as close as possible to the perfection your now so young experience in Karate allows it. You constantly put yourself on the line, re-evaluate yourself constantly. No matter the rank, no matter the vision, no matter the experience or the age. This is the path to growth… re-evaluating yourself constantly while keeping your self-esteem high. Not losing faith no matter what.

Tomorrow is another day, next exercise is another one, next minute is another one. Each breath has its own life. So allow yourself to live that breath and give it its utmost value… yes it has value. Everything you do has value and importance in your own growth. Be faithful in everything you do… seek the perfection of yourself, your own character. Stay aware. Bring your awareness to this moment to your life and your own purpose.
