What is Islam?
Is Islam new or different? Islam is the continuation of same teachings given by all the prophets from Adam to Moses and Jesus: Ø Recognize the oneness of God – there is no god but God Ø Voluntary submission to the Will of God Islam teaches:

Muslims believe that these earlier scriptures were the divine words of
God in their original form, but through time and translation, parts may have
been changed or lost.

4. Prophets
• Prophets were sent to every nation to teach:
– God alone should be worshiped – people should strive to live righteously
• Who are the Prophets?
– 25 are mentioned by name in the Quran including: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Job,
Joseph, Moses, David, John, and Jesus. Peace be upon them all
Belief of a Muslim is: God loves us and He knows &
controls everything. However, we still believe in Free
Will.
5. Divine Decree
The result is: A sense of patience and
confidence. No matter what happens, it is a
part of God’s plan.
6. The Day of Judgment
• The world will eventually come to an end. • We will be brought back to life to stand before God to be held accountable for our
individual actions in this life.
• Reward: those who lead a good life and follow God’s guidance will be rewarded in
Heaven • Punishment: while those who reject His
guidance and lead a bad life will be punished by Hell

1. Proclamation of Faith (Shahada)
La ilaha illa Allah wa-Muhammad Rasul Allah. There is no god but God.
Muhammad is the Prophet of God.
2. Required Prayer (Salah)
v Every Muslim is required to pray 5 times a day
v Muslims recite verses from the Qur’an during the prayer

Qur’an • Literal meaning: “the recitation”
• Actual word of God, revealed to Mohammed (PBUH) in Arabic via the angel Gabriel, throughout a period of 23 years
• Book of divine guidance for mankind
• Final revelation of God with a universal message to all of humanity.
Al-Fatiha - The Opening In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
Praise be to God, the Cherisher, the Sustainer of the worlds. Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Master of the day of Judgment.
It is You we worship, and Your Aid we seek. Show us the straight path.
The path of those whom you have blessed, not the path of those who earned your anger, nor the path of those who have gone astray.

Jesus (Isa) Peace Be Upon Him
Do Muslims Believe in Jesus?
JESUS (PBUH) AND ISLAM
v Considered Messiah by the Muslims
v Muslims do not believe that Jesus was the literal son of God, but they do believe he was a miracle of God
sent to Mary. Muslims believe in the Virgin Birth.
v Muslims do not believe that he died on the cross, but that God eased his suffering and ascended him to the
Heaven.
v Muslims believe that Jesus will come back and establish peace on the earth.
Mary, Mother of Jesus May God Be Pleased With Her
• There is an entire chapter in The Quran dedicated to Mary, called Mary (Mariam).
• The Angel Gabriel came to Mary and told her she will give birth to a son Jesus, (pbuh).
• The angel Gabriel said to Mary, “It will happen. God says, ‘It is easy for Me and We
will appoint him as a sign for men and a mercy from Us. It is a matter that has already
been decided.” 19:21
