Introduction

• Islam is a minority religion in Korea (esp. South Korea).

• Now,120.000-130.000 -> Muslim. At about 45.000 -> Korean native muslim.The rest -> immigrant(middle east,malaysia and Indonesia).

• Meanwhile,Islam keep develops and spreads in Korean society over the time.

History of Islam in Korea before 20 Century

• Islam started to enter Korea from 9th century during period of Silla united. It was mentioned by the arrival of Persian and Arabic traders and navigators .

• Many of them settled permanently in Korea, establishing Muslim villages and married Korean women.

• The relantionship between Korean peninsula and muslims continued by Goryeo dinasty in 15th century.

• The exisance of Islam got through the beginning of Joseon dinasty,but Islam disappeared because of isolation in this period.

The Entrance of Islam to Korea in 19th century

• Islam reintroduced again in the middle of 19th century when periode of Korean war and experienced development after it.

• Mr. Zubercoch and Mr. Abdul Rahman (peace keepers delegation of the United Nations from Turkey) were the pioneer.

• Korea Muslim Society was formed in 1955,and changed into Korea Muslim Federation in 1967.

• Seoul Central Mosque was built as the first Mosque and finished in 1976.

• Around 1980,Korean workers that worked in the Middle East returned to Korea and some of them spread Islam.

Development of Islam in Korea during 20th Century

• After accident WTC Sept/11/2001,the curiosity of Islam was increased, although there were many negative thoughts about Islam in the beginning.

• Abdullah Al-Aifan (ambassador of Arab in Seoul) gave $500.000 for KMF as the name of Arab Governmnet and it was used to build Prince Sultan Islamic School.

• They also planned to build High School and University.• Now,many facilities for moslems can be found especially in

big cities because Islam still develop surely.
