Islamic Studies for School Children

Little Stars

The Rulings on using images of animate beings in the children’s books and classrooms.

“Nevertheless, our fuqaha’ have stated that if there is a need or necessity, there is nothing wrong with making images and there is no sin on the image maker in that case, because cases of necessity make forbidden things permissible.” (Question no. 130353, www.islamqa.com)

“It is permissible to use images for teaching children.”(Question number 13716, www.islamqa.com)

“There is nothing wrong with teaching children the alphabet by writing letters with appropriate pictures, even if they are pictures of animate beings, because of the concession allowing “dolls for girls”, and because concessions may be granted to small children that are not granted to adults. Putting up these pictures will not do any harm, because they are imagesthat are permitted, unless the pictures are put up with the aim of venerating the imagesthemselves; if there is no such intention and the pictures are permitted, there is nothing wrong with having them on the ground or hung on the wall.”(Question no. 170060, www.islamqa.com)

“After stating the positive and negative aspects, the Islamic attitude should be clear insha Allah. The more negative points there are, the closer the ruling is to stating that it is haraam, and the more it is able to avoid the negative aspects, the closer it is to being permissible. This tells us that it is essential to establish companies that will produce Islamic cartoons by means of whichall positive virtues may be instilled and all harmful and evil aspects can be avoided.”(Question no. 71170, www.islamqa.com)

“there is nothing wrong with a child looking at some pictures in order to learn. But we shouldalso tell the child that making images is haraam and that this is only done by way ofnecessity, so that the child will grow up knowing the shar’i ruling.”- Shaykh Sulaymaan ibn Naasir al-‘Alwaan.(Question no. 13716, www.islamqa.com)

Note:

Whenever the reader comes across the name of Prophet Muhammad while reading, it is part of the Islamic etiquette to follow his name by sending salutations to him by saying ‘sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam’, which means “may salutations and peace be upon him”.

Whenever one comes across the names of other Prophets, it is part of the Islamic etiquette to follow their names by saying ‘alaihissalaam’, which means “may peace be upon him”.

And whenever one comes across the names of the companions of Prophet Muhammad, the reader must say Radhiyallaahu ‘anhu (may Allah be pleased with him) for a male companion, Radhiyallaahu ‘anhaa (may Allah be pleased with her) for a female companion, radhiyallaahu ‘anhumaa (may Allah be pleased with both of them) for two companions, and radhiyallaahu ‘anhum (may Allah be pleased with them) for more than 2 companions.

The answers to the exercises must not be more than one or two lines.

The exercises are simpler than the content of the lessons, so that the children may find it easy to score marks, and also to understand the greater concepts during the lessons being conducted by the teachers.

The teachers must encourage every child to read the entire lessons, to get familiar with the words. Give them enough practice to read, write, answer & listen to the lessons.

Once, thirty horsemen from among the companions of the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) were sent on a military campaign. During their journey, they camped near some people and asked them to show some hospitality. But the people of the town refused it.

In the meanwhile the leader of the people was stung by a scorpion and the people said, "Is there anyone among you who can recite Ruqyah (incantations) for a scorpion sting?"

Abu Saeed Al Khudri (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) said, "Yes, I can, but I will not recite Ruqyah for him until you give us some sheep." They said, "We will give you thirty sheep."

However the companions didn't regard Abu Saeed Al Khudri for his healing expertise.

Abu Saeed Al Khudri went near the leader and recited Al-Hamd (i.e. Al-Faatihah) over him seven times. Then the leader recovered. The leader thanked him for helping him, and gave him the thirty sheep as gift.

Abu Saeed Al Khudri took the sheep and returned to the companions. The companions enquired as to what he read as Ruqyah. He said, "Sooratul Faatihah". Then some doubts occurred within the companions concerning the permissibility of taking the sheep. The companions said, "Do not do anything further until we ask the Messenger of Allah."

So when they returned to Madina, Abu Saeed Al Khudri mentioned the entire incident to the Messenger of Allah.

After listening to him, the Messenger of Allah said, "How did you know that it is a Ruqyah? Divide them up (the sheep) and give me a share as well."

The arabic word 'Salaah' means 'Prayers'.

Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, the thing in between the man, and between shirk and kufr is the abandoning of the salaah. Therefore every Muslim must pray the obligatory prayers everyday. If a person abandons salaah, then he would become a disbeliever.

The names of the 5 daily Salaah are:

Fajr

House in Paradise

Prophet's wife Umm Habibah (radhiyallaahu 'anhaa) narrated that she heard the Prophet saying: “A house will be built in paradise for every Muslim who offers twelve Rak'aat of Voluntary Prayers other than the Obligatory Prayers in day and night, to seek the pleasure of Allah.”

The arabic word 'Wudhu' means 'Ablution'. It is the action of washing one's parts of the body to be in the state of religious purity. One needs to be in the state of Wudhu before praying.

There are Waajib (Obligatory parts) and Mustahabb (Recommended) parts of Wudhu. It is compulsory to do the Waajib parts of Wudhu. It is not compulsory to do the Mustahabb parts of the Wudhu. However, it is highly encouraged to do the Mustahabb parts of Wudhu.

Mustahabb parts of Wudhu are as follows:

1) Make the intention for purifying oneself. The intention should not be spoken out loud, for its place is in the heart.

2) Say Bismillaah.

LESSON 4

WUDHU

11

3) Then wash the hands up to the wrists three times.

4) Then rinse the mouth three times, by swirling the water inside the mouth, and rinse the nose three times, while blowing the water out by using the left hand to remove the water from the nose.

5) Then wash the face three times, from the hairline to the jawbone and chin, and from ear to ear.

6) Then wash the arms, up to the elbows three times. The arm extends from the fingertips and includes the nails.

7) Then wipe the head and ears once with fresh water; not with the water left over from washing the arms. The wet hands must be placed at the front of the head and bring them to the back of the head, and then bring them back to the place where one started. Then put the index fingers in the ears and wipe the back of the ears with the thumbs.

With regard to a woman’s hair, she should wipe it, whether it is loose or braided, from the front of her head to the roots of the hair at the nape of her neck, but she does not have to wipe the entire length of her hair.

8) Then wash the feet three times up to the ankles.

These are the Mustahabb parts of Wudhu.

The Waajib parts of Wudhu are as follows:

1) Wash the face completely once, which includes rinsing the mouth and nose.

2) Wash the arms up to the elbows once.

3) Wipe the entire head, including the ears.

4) Wash the feet up to ankles, once.

One must wash the face first, then the arms, then wipes the head, then washes the feet, because the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) did wudhu in this order.

This must be done continuously, i.e., the parts of the body must be washed one after the other with no lengthy interruption between washing one part and the next.

These are the Waajib parts of Wudhu.

12

One needs to do the Obligatory parts to be in the state of Wudhu. One would get rewarded for performing the Mustahabb parts of Wudhu.

It is established from the sunnah to wash once, twice or thrice.

The Wudhu gets invalidated when one urinates, defecates or passes wind. Whenever one urinates or defecates, one needs to wash one's private parts thrice, and then resume the Wudhu to maintain the religious purity.

EXERCISES

A. Answer the following questions:

1) What is the meaning of the arabic word 'Wudhu'?

2) Name the two parts of Wudhu.

3) Does one need to speak out the intention loud before making Wudhu?

4) Can one start making Wudhu by washing the legs, and end it by washing the face?

5) Why must one wash the face first, then the arms, then wipe the head, and then wash the feet?

B. Write the steps of the Mustahabb parts of the Wudhu in its correct order, from the actions given below:

Rinse the mouth and nose.

Wash the face.

Wash the hands up to the wrists.

Wash the feet.

Wipe the head and the ears.

Make intention in the heart.

Wash the arms up to the elbows.

Say Bismillaah.

Zakaath is the obligation of taking certain amount out of one's wealth, and given to the poor and needy as charity. Zakaath is given on the wealth that reaches the Nisaab value. The Nisaab value is 85 grams of gold, or 595 grams of silver. When one's wealth reaches the Nisaab value, then it is obligatory upon him to give Zakaath. It is from among the pillars of Islam to give Zakaath. If a person denies to give Zakaath, then he will become a disbeliever.

Every year, Zakaath is taken out of the wealth that reaches the Nisaab value.

2.5% of the total quantity of gold, money, cattle and merchandise goods are taken out as the Zakaath amount. In some materials like the crops of cultivation, 10% of it is taken out as Zakaath.

Narrated Abu Huraira (radhiyallaahu ‘anhu):

Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "Anyone whom Allah has given wealth, but does not pay its Zakaath, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be presented to him in the shape of a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two poisonous glands in its mouth, and it will encircle itself round his neck and bite him over his cheeks and say, "I am your wealth; I am your treasure." Saheehul Bukhaari, Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 88.

Allah says in the Qur'an in Chapter 3, Verse 180,

"And let not those who covetously withhold of that which Allah has bestowed on them of His Bounty (wealth), think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakaath). Nay, it will be worse for them; the things which they covetously withheld shall be tied to their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Well-Acquainted with all that you do."

Zakaath is given to the following people:

to Fuqaraa’ (poor).

to Al Masaakeen (the needy).

to those employed to collect the Zakaath funds.

The arabic word 'Saum' means fasting. Fasting in the month of Ramadaan is an obligation upon Muslims.

Allah says in the Qur'an,

“O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness.” (Qur'an 2:183)

Fasting makes Muslims to strengthen Taqwaa, God consciousness.

Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam. The Fasting of Ramadaan occurs once in every year, during the 9th lunar month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadaan. Furthermore, Muslims

LESSON 6

SAUM

17

may fast voluntary fasting in any day in the year, except on the days of Eid. Another speciality of the month of Ramadaan is that the Qur'an was revealed in this month.

Some of the Muslims are free from the obligation of fasting. They are the people who are ill, travelers, and others who are unable to fast. They will have to make up to the missed fasts, by fasting when they are healthy to fast.

Fasting helps the Muslims to develop self-control. The Prophet said that, Allah is not in need of the fasting of the person who doesn't control his tongue. Hence the Muslims must abstain from backbiting, slandering and lying.

Fasting helps the Muslims to contemplate over the gifts of Allah. The value of food, water and other blessings of Allah are realised by the fasting person, when he abstains from them during fasting.

Fasting helps the Muslims to realise the feelings of hunger and thirst, due to which it encourages them to show compassion towards the poor and the needy.

Fasting helps the Muslims to develop the spirit of patience, that helps in strengthening the faith.

The fasting person must abstain from food, water and many other things from dawn to sunset.

At dusk, the fast is broken with a light meal. That's the time of Iftaar.

Special prayers are organised in the Masaajid during the nights of Ramadaan. They are the night prayers in congregation. It is commonly called as the Taraaweeh prayers. In most of the masaajid the entire Qur'an is recited during the 29 or the 30 nights of Ramadaan.

Eid-ul-Fitr.

The month of Ramadaan ends with Islamic celebration, the feast of the breaking of the Fast, called Eidul-Fitr. The Muslims go to the open grounds with all their family members and friends, which includes, the men and the women, the young and the old, the rich and the poor, and pray the Eid prayers in congregation.

On the night before the Eid celebrations, after completing the 29 days or 30 days of fasting, the Muslims are obliged to give Zakaath-Ul-Fitr, which is the food grains and cooking materials to the poor and the needy, to ensure that the poor and the rich celebrate the festival together.

The Hajj Pilgrimage is the Fifth pillar of Islam. Hajj is an obligation on the Muslims who are blessed with health and wealth.

The Pilgrimage is undertaken to the Ka'aba, the first house of worship built in Makka.

Muslims must not undertake pilgrimage to the shrines of saints, or to any monasteries or any historical place.

The Prophet said that Allah forgives all the sins of the pilgrim who does the hajj to Makka; and the pilgrim would become like a new born child.

The pilgrimage rite begins on the 8th day of DhulHijjah, the last month of the Islamic year, and ends on the 13th day of DhulHijjah.

All men who come to Makka to perform hajj must wear the two pieces of unsewn white clothes. The rich and the poor, the king and the pauper, all in one simple white dressing come to perform Hajj, while humbling themselves to their Creator. To wear the unsewn white clothes and make intentions for the pilgrimage is to be in a state called Ihraam. And for the women, they can be in their Burkhas and Abayas, while being in the state of Ihraam.

During Hajj, in the state of Ihraam, Muslim women must wear their cloaks and outer garments that cover their entire bodies, except their faces.

The three types of Hajj are:

Tamattu

Qiraan

Ifraad

Tamattu

In the Tamattu type of Hajj, the pilgrim does the Umraa and Hajj, after taking a short break between the Umraa and Hajj. The ihraam is observed twice. First ihraam is observed during the Umraa, and the second ihraam is observed during Hajj.

Ifraad

In the Ifraad type of Hajj, the pilgrim doesn't do Umraa. The pilgrim does only Hajj in the Ifraad type of Hajj. The ihraam is observed once in Ifraad.

The Voluntary pilgrimage is called as Umrah. And it can be done even in the times other than the days of Hajj.

Haabil (Abel) and Qaabil (Cain) were the two sons of Prophet Adam (‘alaihissalaam). Haabil was born along with his twin sister. And Qaabil was born along with his twin sister.

When Haabil and Qaabil reached the age of marriage, Adam ordered Haabil to marry the twin sister of Qaabil; and Qaabil to marry the twin sister of Haabil. However, Qaabil wanted to marry his own twin sister, for he found her to be more beautiful, and he refused to allow Haabil to marry his sister. Adam commanded both the brothers to

make sacrifices to Allah, and that the one whose sacrifice was accepted by Allah, was to marry Qaabil's twin sister.

Both the brothers Qaabil and Haabil prepared their sacrifices. Qaabil sacrificed his rotten plants that were of no worth, while Haabil gave a good fat she-goat in sacrifice. As a sign of acceptance, Allah sent a fire that consumed the goat, making it known that Allah was pleased with Haabil's sacrifice, while Qaabil's sacrifice was left untouched.

Qaabil was unhappy and angry with the outcome of the results. He approached Haabil and told him that he would kill him. However, Haabil said that he would not extend his hands against Qaabil, and said that he would have to carry the sins for committing a murder. The angry man took a rock and smashed the head of his brother, which led to the instant death of Haabil.

Qaabil didn't know what to do with the dead body of his brother. He carried the body and walked around the earth, until when Allah sent a crow to him. Qaabil saw the crow that scratched the earth and buried. He felt so ashamed that he didn't even know what the crow knew. Hence he buried his dead brother and regretted.

The first murder on earth was committed by Qaabil. Therefore he will have a share of the sins of every murder on earth, for initiating the sin on earth.

Proofs from the Qur'an and Hadeeth:

However, Haabil said when Qaabil threatened to kill him: If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you; for I fear Allah, the Lord of the 'Aalameen (mankind, jinn, and all that exists) (Qur'an, Chapter 5, Verse 28)

Allah Almighty says:

Then, Allah sent a crow that scratched the ground to show him how to hide the dead body of his brother. He (the murderer) said: "Woe to me! Am I not even able to be as this crow and to hide the dead body of my brother? "Then he became one of those who regretted}. (Qur'an, Chapter 5, Verse 31)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, "None (no human being) is killed or murdered (unjustly), but a part of responsibility for the crime is laid on the first son of Adam who invented the tradition of killing (murdering on earth)." (Musnad Ahmad)

During the times of Prophet Nooh (Noah) 'alaihissalaam, there lived pious men by names Wadd, Suwa, Nasr, Ya'ooq and Yagooth. However, when these pious men died, the people who were living there felt sad for missing their companionship. Shaitaan made use of their emotions and suggested the people to make statues and images of the pious men to remember them. The people obeyed shaitaan's suggestions and made the idols of those five men. The people didn't make those statues to worship them, but they made them to remember them and speak good of their contributions. However, whenever they passed by those statues, they used to kiss them and show respect to them. After a generation passed away, the children of the previous generation assumed their parents to have considered the statues to be partners with Allah, and they started to worship them. This is how mankind started to commit shirk with Allah.

Prophet Nooh was sent as a messenger of Allah, to a people who were committing shirk. The people of his times were involved in worshipping the idols of the pious dead men. He asked the people to worship Allah alone. For nearly 950 years he invited them to Islam. But only a few believed in his message. The majority of his people didn't believe in the message of Nooh. They even threatened to kill him.

Allah commanded Prophet Nooh to make an arc with planks and nails. Allah commanded Nooh to make the arc, so that he and the believers may take refuge in it, while Allah sends the flood as a punishment to his people.

When the people saw Nooh making an arc, the people laughed and mocked at him. They accused him of being crazy to make an arc in a land where there was no water source. But then, Prophet Nooh knew that Allah was going to send a terrible flood to destroy them.

When the time for their destruction approached, Allah sent punishment to them by sending water from heavens, and letting water to gush forth from the earth. The people who disbelieved in the message of Nooh were shocked to see the floods, and they all got drowned in the floods. Even Nooh's wife and one of his sons were among those

who disbelieved in him, and were amongst those who got drowned in the floods. The believers who believed in the message of Nooh embarked on the arc and were saved from the floods. Thus Allah saves the lives of the believers who place their trust in Him.

Proofs from the Qur'an:

“And indeed We sent Nooh to his people and he said, 'O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other god but Him.'” (Quran 23:23)

Prophet Saalih ('alaihissalaam) and the She Camel

LESSON 10

The people of Thamud were wealthy and powerful. They carved buildings into the hills, and built them on the plains. They became haughty and indulged in idol worship and other evil practises.

Prophet Saalih ('alaihissalaam) was the man whom Allah chose to deliver His message to the people of Thamud. He warned his people of Allah's punishment, if they didn't stop committing evil. He asked his people to worship only Allah, and stop idol worship.

One day, the people of Thamud gathered in a meeting place and asked Prophet Saalih to show a miracle if what he said was true. They demanded that a camel be brought out from the rocks of the nearby mountain. They told him that they would believe in his message if he brought the camel out of the rocks.

Allah made a ten month pregnant she camel to emerge from the rocks as a miracle. It was a miracle that they witnessed by their own eyes. The miracle led some people believe in Prophet Saalih, while the majority still disbelieved.

The she camel was known to drink a lot of water. Hence the people planned to kill the camel. However, Prophet Saalih warned them of the torment that would befall them if they killed the camel. The people didn't pay heed to what Prophet Saalih said, and a group of men plotted to kill the she camel, shot her with an arrow and pierced her with a sword. The she camel fell down dead. Prophet Saalih warned them of Allah's punishment after three days. The killers cheered one another, and even planned to kill Prophet Saalih and his family.

Allah saved Prophet Saalih and his family, while they migrated to a safe place. After three days the sky was filled with lightning and thunder, and the earth shook violently, so much so that they all died in fear, while the city of Thamud was destroyed. Thus, Allah destroyed the evil people.

30

Proofs from the Qur'an:

"O Saalih! You have been among us as a figure of good hope and we wished for you to be our chief, till this, new thing, which you have brought that we leave our gods, and worship your God alone! Do you now forbid us the worship of what our fathers have worshipped? But we are really in grave doubt as to that which you invite us to monotheism.” (Qur'an 11:62)

“O my people! This she camel of God is a sign to you, leave her to feed on God's earth, and touch her not with evil lest a near torment will seize you.” (Qur'an 11:64)

Prophet Saalih said. "O my people! I have indeed conveyed to you the message of my Lord, and have given you good advice; but you like not good advisers.” (Qur'an 7:79)

“We sent the she camel to Thamud as a clear sign, but they did her wrong.” (Quran 17:59)

31

Prophet Ibraaheem (‘alaihissalaam) was born to a man who used to make idols. His father and his people used to worship those idols. As a young boy, he used to question his father about the gods that his father used to worship.

Ibraaheem once said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot help you in anything". He asked his father to give up idolatry; and also asked his father to follow the way that was guided by Allah.

His father got angry at him and said, "do you reject my gods, O Ibraaheem? If you do not stop, I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely before I punish you".

His father and his people didn't stop to worship the idols.

One day, when the people of his town were going to a festival, Ibraaheem planned to do something. As they all went out of the town, Ibraaheem entered the temple where the idols were placed for worship. As he entered the temple, he saw various food kept in front of the idols and said aloud, "will you not eat? What troubles you that you don't speak?" Ibraaheem started to break the idols by his hand. He broke all the idols, except the chief of the idols. He left the chief of the idols untouched and went out of the temple.

Later, when the people returned back to the town, they entered the temple to worship the idols. As they entered, they were shocked to see the idols broken. As they were wondering who had broken their idols, a man from amongst them took the name of Ibraaheem, and said that he must have done this, since he used to speak ill about them. Ibraaheem was at once summoned to the place where the people gathered. The people questioned Ibraaheem by saying, "Is it you who have done this to our gods O Ibraaheem?"

Ibraaheem had left the chief of the gods untouched for a reason and said, "This chief of them had done it. So ask them if they can speak".

LESSON 11

Prophet Ibraaheem ('alaihissalaam) and the Idols

32

The people blamed each other for not guarding and answered Ibraaheem by saying, "Indeed you know well that these don't speak".

So Ibraaheem said, "So do you worship instead of Allah, the gods that do not profit you or harm you? Fie on you and all that you worship instead of Allah. Don't you have any sense?"

The people who had no answer to his questions were angered and decided to punish him. They arranged for a huge fire to be prepared. People from the houses started to contribute fuel and wood to prepare the fire. And they wanted to throw Ibraaheem into the fire.

33

Even as they were preparing to throw Ibraaheem into the fire, his faith in Allah was strong and said, "Allah is Sufficient for me, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs".

As Ibraaheem was thrown into the fire, Allah said to the fire, "O fire, be cool and safe to Ibraaheem". By the permission of Allah, the fire didn't harm Ibraaheem. And Ibraaheem came out of the fire safe. The people got scared looking at this miracle. Thus comes the help of Allah, to the ones who strive in His way.

Proofs from the Qur'an:

"Verily! This is in the former Scriptures. The Scriptures of Ibraaheem and Musa." (Qur'an 87:18-19)

"And mention in the Book (the Qur'an) Ibraaheem, indeed he was a man of truth, a Prophet. When he said to his father: "O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything? O my father! Verily, there has come to me of knowledge that which came not unto you. So follow me. I will guide you to a Straight Path." (Qur'an 19:41-43)

"He (the father) said: ‘Do you reject my gods, O Ibraaheem? If you do not stop, I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely before I punish you.’" (Qur'an 19:46)

"And recite to them the story of Ibraaheem. When he said to his father and his people: "What do you worship?" They said: "We worship idols, and to them we are ever devoted." He said: "Do they hear you, when you call (on them)? Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?" They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing so." He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping, you and your ancient fathers? Verily! They are enemies to me, save the Lord of all that exists; Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me; And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink. And when I am ill, it is He who cures me; And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again)." (Qur'an 26:69-81)

Allah chose Prophet Musa (Moses) as His messenger, and asked him to speak to Fir'aun (Pharoah) about Allah. Musa went along with his brother Haaroon ('alaihissalaam) to meet Fir'aun. Fir'aun was a thaagooth, who considered himself to be god.

Musa invited Fir'aun to the worship of one God, Allah. He invited him to worship the Lord of the Universe.

Fir'aun said, “And what is the Lord of the mankind, jinn, and all that exists?”

Musa replied, “The Lord of the heavens, earth and all that is between them. Your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers!”

Fir'aun said, "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."

Musa said, “Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you did but understand!”

Fir'aun said, “If you choose a god other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners.”

Musa said, “Even if I bring you something manifest (and convincing)?”

Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "Bring it forth then, if you are of the truthful!"

Fir'aun asked Musa to show the signs of being Allah's messenger. Allah had given Musa many signs that would make one believe that those signs were the miracles from Allah. Musa had a stick that he used to carry. By the permission of Allah, it became a big snake when he threw it on the ground. Fir'aun saw this and assumed that it was magic. Hence he announced for all the magicians to come to him and challenge Musa on a determined day. Fir'aun promised to give riches to the magicians if they defeat Musa and Haaroon.

Prophet Musa ('alaihissalaam) & the Magicians

LESSON 12

36

When the magicians gathered on a fixed day, on a day of a customary festival day, people crowded on the streets and were witnessing the contest. Musa asked the magicians to perform first.

The magicians threw their ropes first to show their magic. As they threw them, the ropes started to appear like snakes and started swirling and writhing. The people watching this were amazed to see this. Fir'aun and his men applauded the magicians. Musa got scared looking at the sight. However, he had faith in Allah, that Allah would make his task easy. Allah directed him to throw the stick.

As the stick was thrown, it became a big snake, and swallowed the ropes that the magicians threw. The people watching the miracle, cheered at Musa. The magicians were shocked at this very sight. They knew that it was not magic. They knew that the

37

big snake was a real one that swallowed the ropes. And they recognised that miracle to be the sign from Allah.

The magicians fell down prostrating and saying: “We believe in the Lord of mankind, jinn and all that exists; the Lord of Musa and Haaroon.”

Fir'aun told the magicians, “You have believed in him before I give you permission. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all.”

Fir'aun threatened to kill the magicians for believing in the God of Musa and Haaroon.

The magicians said, “No harm! Surely, to our Lord we are to return. “Verily! We hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers in Musa and in the Monotheism which he has brought from Allah.”

The magicians began that day as disbelievers, corrupt and interested only in riches and fame; however, within a few hours they had recognised the truth. They saw with their own eyes the power of Allah, and repented for their sins. Allah is the Most Merciful, and He will forgive those who turn to Him with sincere and humble repentance.

As Musa and Haaroon left the contest field, Fir'aun and his men held the magicians. The magicians, as it was told, were put to death, and their bodies were hung in the streets and market places.

The magicians preferred to die as believers, rather than to live as disbelievers; for they knew that Allah would forgive their sins and admit them in paradise.

Proofs from the Qur'an:

“O Musa! Have you come to drive us out from our land with your magic? We can also show you magic to match it, so set an appointment between us and you, which neither we nor you shall forget to keep, in a fair (open) place.’

Musa said, ‘Let the encounter be on the day (of the Festival) of Adornment, and let the people assemble at forenoon.’” (Qur'an 20:56-59)

Prophet Yunus ('alaihissalaam) was sent to the people of Nineveh, to call them to the worship of One God. He spoke to them about Allah, Who is free from any partners, sons, daughters or co-equals. He asked the people to stop worshipping idols; and to stay away from evil behaviour. However, the people refused to listen to him, and ignored his words of advise.

The Story of Prophet Yunus ('alaihissalaam)

LESSON 13

40

The conduct of his people angered Yunus, and he decided to leave them. He gave a final warning that Allah would punish their arrogant behaviour; but the people made fun of Yunus, and claimed that they were not afraid.

Yunus gathered a few of his belongings and left his people. Allah was not pleased with this decision of Yunus, since he was not commanded to leave them.

Soon after Yunus left Nineveh, the atmosphere there began to change. The sky began to change colour; as red as fire. The people were filled with fear and understood that the destruction was approaching them. The entire population of Nineveh gathered on a mountaintop and begged for Allah's forgiveness. Allah accepted their repentance and stopped His punishment. The sky returned to normal, and the people returned to their homes. They prayed that Yunus would come back to them and guide them to the straight path.

In the meantime, Yunus had boarded a ship with many passengers, in the hope that it would take him as far away from his heedless people. The ship sailed into the calm seas. As the darkness fell around them, the sea suddenly changed. The wind began to blow violently and stormed with great magnitude. The boat started to shake uncontrollably, and felt as if it were about to split into pieces. The people in the ship gathered in the dark and decided to throw their luggage out of the ship to save the ship from sinking. But that didn't make any difference. The passengers learnt that the weight in the ship was contributing to their difficult situation. So they decided to cast lots to throw one of the passengers out of the ship.

It was a sea travellers' tradition to cast lots by writing down all the names and drawing one person to be cast overboard. The name was drawn, and it was Yunus. The passengers didn't want to throw Yunus into the sea, since they knew him to be a pious and righteous man. Hence they cast lots again, but the name drawn again was Yunus.

Yunus, the Prophet of Allah understood that this was in destiny as predetermined by Allah, so he looked at his fellow passengers and jumped out of the ship. The passengers were sad to see Yunus jump into the sea. While he was in the sea, a huge fish swallowed him at once. Yunus went into the belly of the huge fish.

When Yunus woke-up from unconsciousness, he realized that he was in the belly of the giant fish. He was afraid to be in the body of the fish. The acidic digestive juices were eating away his skin, and he cried out in the darkness by saying,

41

“None has the right to be worshipped but You (Allah), glorified are You; and truly, I have been one of the wrongdoers!” (Qur'an 21:87)

Yunus continued praying and supplicating to Allah. He realised his wrongdoing and begged for Allah's forgiveness.

Allah answered his supplication and commanded the giant fish to eject him onto the shore. The fish got Yunus out of its body at once by throwing him up to the shore.

As Yunus reached the shore, he was in pain, and continued to cry out for protection. He continued to repeat his supplication. Allah caused a plant of gourd to grow over him, that offered protection from the sun, and provided food. He became well again and realised that he needed to return to his people and continue the work that Allah had commanded him.

When he returned to Nineveh, he was amazed at the change in his people. They informed him of their fear when the sky had turned blood red, and their gathering on the mountain to beg Allah's forgiveness. Yunus was pleased to know it and lived with them teaching to worship Allah.

Proofs from the Qur'an:

"And, verily, Yunus was one of the Messengers. When he ran to the laden ship, he agreed to cast lots and he was among the losers; then a big fish swallowed him and he had done an act worthy of blame. Had he not been of them who glorify God, he would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) until the Day of Resurrection. But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick; and We caused a plant of gourd to grow over him. And We sent him to a hundred thousand people or even more, and they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a while.” (Qur'an 37:139-148)

Once Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) took part in the battle along with his companions. When the time for the afternoon rest approached while he was in a valley with plenty of thorny trees, he dismounted under a tree and rested in its shade and hung his sword on the tree. The people dispersed amongst the trees in order to have shade.

While the Prophet sat in the shade to take a nap, a man by the name of Ghawrath ibn Al-Harith came and grabbed the sword from the tree, and stood on top of the Prophet with the sword and said, “Oh Muhammad, who will stop me from killing you?"

The Prophet looked up at him and said, “Allah”. The Prophet said that with a firm conviction, while not showing any fear.

Prophet's reply instilled fear in Ghawrath, so much so that his body started to shake out of fear, and he dropped the sword.

Prophet picked up the sword, and stood in front of Ghawrath and said, "Who will stop me from killing you now?" Ghawrath said, “No one. But be gentle in your taking of revenge". He pleaded the Prophet to not kill him. Prophet responded to him and said, ‘Do you bear witness that Allah is the only God worthy of worship, and that I am His Messenger?’

Ghawrath said, "No. But I will not fight against you anymore, nor will I support anyone who does try to fight you or fight against the Muslims." And the Prophet then let him go.

After Ghawrath left the Prophet, he realized the truth of Islam and embraced Islam. He said, “Laailaaha IllAllah, MuhammadurRasoolUllah.” He went back to his people and said, "I have just come back from the best of Allah’s creation."

LESSON 1

Pray on Time

53

There was a companion of Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam), by the name Abbaad Bin Bishr (radhiyallaahu 'anhu).

One time, when he was travelling along with the Prophet and his companions, he and Ammaar bin Yaasir (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) were given the responsibility to guard the people while they were asleep. It was the practise of the Prophet to assign men to guard the people from the attack of the enemies.

Ammar Bin Yaasir told Abbaad bin Bishr, "I am very tired, so you guard for the first half of the night, and then wake me up, so that I can guard the next part of the night".

Abbaad Bin Bishr agreed to Ammaar's suggestion; and Ammaar soon went to sleep. Abbaad was very moved by the silent atmosphere at the night, and decided to pray the night prayer. He started to pray Sooratul Kahf in a slow and rhythmic manner, while he was totally engrossed in its meanings and it's lessons. He was all alone praying, while the rest of his people were sleeping.

While he was praying peacefully, a man from among the enemies of the Prophet watched him standing all alone and praying. The enemy knew that all were asleep, except one person. So the enemy decided to kill Abbaad. The man pulled his arrow from the quiver, fixed it on his bow and shot the arrow at Abbaad. The arrow went into the flesh of Abbaad while he was praying; but Abbaad did'nt scream or leave the prayer. He pulled the arrow while praying and continued the prayer in a calm manner. The enemy being wonder struck by Abbaad's involvement in the prayer, took another arrow and shot at Abbaad. Abbaad didn't scream or leave the prayer even then. He just continued his prayers. The man now shot the third arrow, due to which he bled profusely. As he was bleeding, he did his ruku' (bowing) and did his sujood (prostration) and woke up Ammar by the side and finished his prayers. Abbaad told Ammaar to stand guard at his place, since he was wounded. Ammaar looked at Abbaad bleeding, jumped up and began to scream. Seeing them both the attacker ran away into the darkness.

As Abbaad was still bleeding, Ammaar rushed to Abbaad to help him and asked him, "Glory be to God! Why didn't you wake me when you were hit by the first arrow?"

Abbaad answered him by saying, "I was in the midst of reciting the verses of the Qur'an, and I did not want to cut short the recitation, as I was enjoying it. The Prophet had commanded me to commit this Soorah to memory. Hence, death would have been dearer to me than interrupting the recitation of this Soorah."

54

Advise to our children:

Prayers are so important for us. It is only when we pray regularly, we can stay away from the evils around us.

Allah says Quran 29:45

Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book; and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.

Once, one of the Sahaabaa came to Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) and asked: “What is the thing that Allah loves most?” Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam)replied “The thing that Allah loves most is when his people pray salaah on time.” (Saheehul Bukhaari)

Abu Huraira (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) narrated that: I heard Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) saying;

”If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?” They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) added, “That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah removes evil deeds.”(Saheehul Bukhaari)

56

The Muslims of the previous generations used to respect their elders and their teachers. Let us learn from the life of Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radhiyallaahu 'anhumaa), the manners of respecting the teachers.

Abdullah Ibn Abbas was the nephew of Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam). Prophet made dua for Abdullah bin Abbas by asking Allah to give him the correct understanding of the religion.

As a young boy, he used to spend time with the Prophet. He was only thirteen years old when the Prophet passed away.

Respect your TeachersLESSON 2

57

Abdullah Ibn Abbas used to travel long distances to gain knowledge from the other Sahaabaa (companions of the Prophet); even to learn a single hadeeth.

In one visit, he went to see a Sahaabi (companion of the Prophet) who was asleep at that time. Abdullah did not want to disturb the Sahaabi; so he decided that he would wait outside until the Sahaabi woke up. When the Sahaabi woke up, he was very surprised to see Abdullah Ibn Abbas waiting for him outside.

The Sahaabi asked, “Why did you not wake me up? You are the cousin of our Prophet, and I would have come to see you if you had asked!”

Abdullah Ibn Abbas explained by saying, "I am a student, and you are my teacher; so I did not want to disturb or cause inconvenience to you."

That's how the people of the past generations respected their teachers.

As time went on, Abdullah ibn Abbas became one of the most knowledgeable Sahaabaa, and people would come from all over the world.

EXERCISES

A. Activity:

1) Ask every child to take interview of their parents, with regards to their best teachers they had come across in their lives. Let the children make note of the names of their parents' teachers, and the reasons for liking them, and share the matter in the classroom in front of the teacher, one after another.

2) Let each child speak about the best teacher he/she has had in his school life so far. And also tell the reasons why they respect them.

B. Answer the following questions:

1) How was Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radhiyallaahu 'anhumaa) related to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam)?

2) What did Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radhiyallaahu 'anhumaa) do when the Sahaabi was sleeping?

58

59

Du'aa is the weapon of a believer. We must make supplications regularly to seek Allah's forgiveness. The Prophet used to read istigfaar 70 to 100 times a day.

The Prophet instructed us to make dua to Allah, even if we want a shoe lace.

Supplications would lead us to be in the protection of Allah, from the evil of shaitaan. There are supplications before eating food, after eating food, while wearing clothes, while going out of the home, while entering home, while traveling, while sleeping etc etc. These supplications help us to rely in Allah, and to seek the blessings of Allah.

The Prophet said that whoever reads Aayatul Kursi in the morning, then shaitaan will not touch him until evening. And whoever reads Aayatul Kursi in the evening, then shaitaan would not touch him until morning. He also said that Allah would send an angel for protecting the one who recites aayatul Kursi at night before sleeping.

The Prophet instructed us to read Qul AoozubiRabbil Falaq and Qul AoozubiRabbin Naas Soorahs to ward off the effects of the evil eye and the evil whispering of the shaitaan.

The Prophet instructed us to read the last 2 Aayaath of Sooratul Baqarah in the night.

So strengthen your eemaan by reading the supplications in the mornings and evenings.

LESSON 3

The Importance of Reading the Morning and Evening Du'aas

EXERCISESA. Activity:

1) Let the children memorize the Aayatul Kursi, the last two verses of Sooratul Baqarah, Qul AoozubiRabbil Falaq and Qul AoozubiRabbin Naas. Ask them to read them everyday at appropriate times.

2) Ask the children to make Istigfar every day; at least a hundred times a day. Remind them of it on a weekly basis.

60

61

Seek the Permission before Entering the Room

LESSON 4

It is from the Islamic manners to seek the permission of those in the room, before entering the room.

At times when elders would be relaxing in sleeping clothes, one may not just enter without their permission.

The permission is sought by knocking the door and saying salaam. If the members in the rooms answer the salaam and permit to enter, then one is given the permission to enter the room. If not, then one must not enter the room.

Musa ibn Talhah, whose father was a close companion of the Prophet, mentions: “I entered with my father my mother’s room. He pushed me hard in my chest so that I sat down. He then said: ‘Would you enter without permission?’” (Related by Al-Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad)

Even with one's parents, privacy should be respected by everyone who has attained the age of puberty. This emphasizes the importance of decency which should be observed even in one’s own home. But it is not merely with one’s parents that one should seek permission before entry.

A Hadith reported by Jabir states: “A man should seek permission to enter the room of his son, daughter, mother, even though she may be elderly; (and also seek the permission of) brother, sister and father.” (Related by Al-Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad)

These are the closest relatives who may be living in the same house and are in frequent contact every day. Nevertheless, they have to knock on the door and wait for permission before entry. Such are the proper Islamic manners.

Some people might find this unnecessary. They wonder whether this puts a sort of barrier between parents and children. The fact is that it does not. It leads to more respect and kindness.

62

A man asked Hudhaifah (radhiyallaahu 'anhu): “Should I ask permission before entering my mother’s room?”

Hudhaifah answered: “If you do not obtain her permission, you would see what she does not like you to see.” (Related by Al-Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad and Abd Al-Razzaq).

There are times when the elders would change their clothes or would need privacy. Hence we must not enter the rooms without seeking their permission.

EXERCISES

A. Activity:

1) Ask the children questions in the classroom as to whether they seek the permission of their parents before entering the room or not.

B. Fill in the blanks:

1) A man should seek permission to enter the room of his son, daughter, ......................., even though she may be elderly; (also seek the permission of) brother, sister and father.

2) A man asked Hudhaifah radhiyallaahu 'anhu: “Should I ask permission before entering my .................................. room?”

63

Smile PleaseLESSON 5

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) used to smile at whomever he came across.

He once said, "Smiling at your brother is charity".

A smiling face sends a positive feelings towards the people whom we meet.

Short Story

A man by the name Yasser once went to the market to buy some vegetables. As he walked into the vegetable market, he found something strange. He saw two shops that sold vegetables. But one of them was crowded with customers, while the other shop was empty without people, even though both the shops had equal goods and service.

64

Yasser was curious to know the reason for the people crowding in one of the shops. Hence he goes and asks one of the customers there.

Yasser: Why is that the people want to buy from this shop; and not from the other shop?

Customer: In this shop the owner and the salesmen are cheerful and smiling all the time. It is a wonderful experience out here to buy vegetables. Whereas in the other shop, people are so damn frowning all the time.

Yasser learnt that the Sunnah of the Prophet is rewarding in Duniya too. He therefore said, "smiling is not only charity, it is also a blessing".

EXERCISES

A. Activity:

1) Remind the children on a weekly basis, of the importance of meeting people with the smiling face. Ask them to smile at their classmates too.

65

Once a man came and asked the Prophet for an advise. The Prophet said, don't get angry. The man again asked the Prophet for an advise. The Prophet once again said, "don't get angry". The man again asked the Prophet for another advise. And the Prophet once again said, "don't get angry".

The Prophet once said that, "the strong man amongst you is not the one who can wrestle others, but the strong man amongst you is the one who controls his anger".

The Prophet advised to make wudhu or sleep when one is angry.

Short Story

Once a 6 year old girl by the name Aasiya was at her home with her mom. She was bored and was not in a good mood that evening. Her mom asked her to do some work, but she declined to do it at once.

LESSON 6

Cool your Anger

66

Her mother found it strange at her behavior. She was wondering as to what happened to her child.

Aasiya started to argue at everything with her mother. As the mother was talking to her, she at once banged the door and locked the door while she stepped into the room.

The mother was worried at her behavior, and was waiting for her to come out of the room. Aasiya came out of the room after 5 minutes, but now she came out with a cheerful face, smiling at her mother. As the mother saw her, she was surprised at the change in mood and asked her a question.

Mother: What happened all of a sudden? You were angry before getting into the room. And now you seem to be happy.

Aasiya: I was feeling very irritated. Hence I locked the room and went into the bathroom and made wudhu (ablution). My teacher has taught us to make wudhu when we get angry. And mummy, it worked!

The mother was happy to see her child speak with such faith in the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam).

The Sunnah is there to implement. And when we implement the Sunnah, we can find the results. Hence follow the Sunnah all the time.

67

Separate your BedsLESSON 7

The Prophet advised that the beds be separated, as the children get 10 years old.

68

Short Story

Once the students from the 6th standard went for a picnic. They had great time playing and eating delicious food. When the time to sleep approached, the boys took their beds and were preparing to sleep. Hussein didn't find his bed. So he asked his friend Sabeel to share his bed with him. Sabeel at once rejected to share his bed.

Hussein: Why are you so indifferent? Don't you know that sharing is Sunnah?

Sabeel: I have heard the hadeeth of the Prophet, which says that the beds must be separated from the age 10. And we are not supposed to share one bed. Hence I will not share the bed; but I shall give my bed to you. Take it. I shall sleep on the ground.

Hussein: Thanks my dear friend. I shall also sleep on the ground then.

Suddenly a friend of theirs came to them with an extra bed and said that one of them may use it.

Hussein took the bed and thanked his friend. And both the friends slept on separate beds according to the Sunnah.

A. Answer the following questions:

1) At what age are beds to be separated?

2) What did Hussein ask Sabeel?

3) Why was Sabeel not willing to share the bed?

69

Do not be ExtravagantLESSON 8

There are many people in the world who are suffering without water. In India, we do find places where people stand in queues to fill water from the water trucks. Especially in summer, it becomes very hard to conserve water. Many animals and human-beings die without water.

70

Short Story

One time a man was thirsty for water. Besides the park he found a well with water. But he didn't find a bucket to draw water from it. So he went further in search of water. As he approached a garden, he found a broken tap, out of which water was overflowing, while no one was fetching from it. The man was disturbed to see the water being wasted. So he went near the tap and drank from it, quenched his thirst, and later knocked at the door in the neighbourhood.

A lady came out of the house and asked him, "Yes, how can I help you?"

The man: Madam, the water tap in the garden is broken, and the water is getting wasted. Could you get me a hose pipe?

The lady: Yes, here it is. Please take it.

The lady gave a hose pipe. The man connected the hose pipe to the broken tap and let the other side of the pipe reach the well, to let the water fill in the well.

The lady was pleased to see the man being so careful of conserving water and thanked him.

Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "Do not waste water, even if you are on a flowing river".

We can make a difference to the place we live in. We just have to be conscious of the things around us.

EXERCISES

A. Activity:

1) Ask the children to make charts to encourage water conservation, and show them to the teacher. Later, these charts shall be pasted in public places to spread awareness on the same.

72

Feed the Poor and the NeedyLESSON 9

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) encouraged the Muslims to feed the people. He encouraged us to help the poor and the needy.

Abdullah bin Salam (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) reported:

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "O people, promote the greetings, feed (the poor and the needy) and perform Salaat when others are asleep, so that you will enter Jannah safely." (At-Tirmidhi)

73

Short Story

Once a beggar asked Aisha (radhiyallaahu 'anhaa) for alms. He asked her to give something to eat. Aisha was fasting then, and there was only a loaf of bread in her house. She said to her female helper, "Give that loaf of bread to him". The helper objected out of care for Aisha and said, "If you give this, you will not have anything to break your fast with".

Aisha repeated again by saying, "Give it to him". The helper obeyed Aisha and gave that loaf of bread to the beggar. However, the helper was not happy with the idea of giving that, since there was nothing at home to break the fast with.

As the evening approached, a man from a house nearby visited the house of Aisha and gave a sheep and some food as gift. In fact, that man never before had given anything like that.

Aisha called her helper and said, "Eat from this, this is better than your loaf of bread".

The above is extracted from Muwatta Malik, Kitaabus Sadaqah.

Allah's help would always be there for the believers who sincerely work to please Him.

EXERCISES

A. Activity:

1) Ask the children to keep things at home to give them to the beggars. Ask them to share their experiences in the past while they helped someone who asked for alms.

2) Aisha called her helper and said, "Eat from this, this is better than your .....................................".

75

Lower your GazeLESSON 10

76

Men and women must lower their gazes when they see any non-Mahram.

It is part of modesty to lower the gaze.

Short Story.

One time a man was walking on the streets, along with his friends. While he was walking on the streets, he used to lower his gaze whenever women would appear in front of him.

One of his friends asked him out of curiosity a question, "Why do you lower your gaze all the time you see women. What's wrong in seeing them?"

The man said, "I lower my gaze because, Allah has instructed in Soorah An Noor to lower the gaze. By the way, even the women must lower their gazes when they see men".

The friend asks him, "But why should we lower our gazes?"

The man answered by saying, "because it is the sign of modesty. We must respect the people on the streets. And we must not look at them unless there is a necessity to look at them".

The man continues saying, "we are permitted to look at the women who are closely related to us. We can see our mothers, aunts, sisters and daughters. But looking at unrelated women on the streets is forbidden; for shaitaan would suggest evil thoughts when we look at them".

The friend was convinced with the man's reasoning and said, "From now on even I shall lower my gaze".

EXERCISES

A. Answer the following questions:

1) What did the man do whenever women passed in front of him?

2) Why did the man lower his gaze whenever he passed by the women?

3) Who are the women whom we are permitted to look at?

4) What did the man's friend say after hearing to the reasons for lowering the gaze?
