On Sunday, October 7, we will observe “World Communion Sunday,” a church-wide Special Sunday of the United Methodist Church. Designated offering envelops will be placed in the seat-back pockets. Your generous gifts on World Communion Sunday support: World Commun ion Scholarships ,
administered by the General Board of Global Ministries (with at least one-half of the annual amount for ministries beyond the United States); and,
Ethnic Scholarship and Ethnic In-Service Training programs related to the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.
Receiving Discipleship awards this year at the District Celebration on September 15 were Lisa (top photo), Sarah and Ben Lankford (bottom photo). Also recognized in a new “Ministry” award category was the Island in the Son UMC Beach Cleanup Program (sorry, no pictures available). Diane Gierhan was recognized as the coordinator of this ministry. Pictured with the honorees are District Superintendent Rev. Eradio Valverde, Jr., SWTX Conference Bishop Jim Dorff, and Jay Brim, SWTX Conference Lay Leader.

Our group will not meet on Tuesday, October 9 so members may attend the UMW meeting at St. John’s UMC.
You are invited to join us for an hour of Psalms and prayers for our church and congregation members any other Tuesday at 10 AM in the Youth Room.
Flowers are funFlowers are funFlowers are funFlowers are fun, whether you were a “flower child,” you are an amateur horticulturist, or you like to play in a field of Texas bluebonnets. And freshly cut flowers or potted plants can enhance the overall appearance of the Celebration Center and add to our worship experience. The flowers will provide us an opportunity to celebrate spe-cial occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, gradua t ions, and o ther achievements; to remember loved ones who have passed on; and to honor someone or something special. The Worship Team will set up a calendar to coordinate dates for those wishing to participate. Please have flowers at the church by 9:15 AM on Sunday and remove them after morning worship unless you make arrangements with the pastor or the Worship Team.
Shirt, Trouser Donations Sought
The first hours out of prison are important in how former inmates appear to the public and how they feel about themselves. Inmate Release Clothing, a program supported by Kairos volunteers, First UMC Beeville, and other organizations, provides clothing to men who need them on that important day. IRC is allowed to provide only one shirt and one pair of trousers to each man. No white clothing, sweat pants, or wind pants are permitted. Shirts must be collared, and due to the starchy diet, most men need XL, 2X, 3X, or 4X shirts. Trousers must be long with waist sizes 34 to 44.
You can help by donating these items or by giving to the IRC for purchasing them. We also encourage you to speak to dry cleaners about clothing never picked up and to thrift stores about these sizes they cannot move and are willing to donate. Please bring donations to me at IITS on Sunday or call me at 361-980-8544 to arrange pickup. Thanks!

Beach Cleanup ProgramBeach Cleanup Program The summer crowds are gone, but work on the beach cleanup at Padre Bali Park continues.
Susan Gaczewski and Stan and Diane Gierhan handed out trash bags to a smaller number of beach goers on Labor Day, but smaller numbers meant more time to visit with individuals. With the number of new people moving to the area, we have an increased opportunity to bring people to worship with us. The program is accomplishing the work of actual beach cleanup, and it is keeping Island in the Son more visible in the community, but we're not yet making a difference to individuals. Is it time to offer a Bible study/worship opportunity at the beach?
Community involvement in the actual beach cleanup has been disappointing, but that just means we'll be trying harder. We are working to develop other opportunities for businesses and individuals that would help keep some of the trash from even getting to the beach. We will need your prayers as we also begin asking for help and support from local government.
The Texas Adopt-a-Beach cleanup was conducted in September with some IITS members participating. In October, we are hoping to schedule a Saturday morning to pick up trash at Padre Bali Park. The cleanup would include the access roads, parts of the dunes, and of course the beach. The Parks Department will start spreading sand that was blown into the dunes back onto the beach to build it up so there will be trash that will be unburied during this process.
"The ultimate benefit is service to God and "The ultimate benefit is service to God and His His creation."creation."
One of our Associate Member/Winter Texans, Jackie Jeffries, created a beautiful quilted cross wall hanging that she presented to Island in the Son UMC last April. It is now displayed in the Celebration Center. Thank you, Jackie, for this beautiful gift!

“The encounter” Stranded in the middle of nowhere five strangers find themselves marooned in a deserted roadside diner. An arrogant
businessman, a lonely single woman, a couple on the verge of divorce, and a youthful runaway all come face to face with a diner owner who serves them more than temporal nourishment. This genial host is a certain Nazarene, who knows all of their secrets and possesses the answers to all of their problems – if only they would trust him. It is a miraculous Encounter
that will leave them all changed.
We were happy to welcome another long-time visitor, Jack Marley, as well as David Tomscha, husband of member Cheri, into the membership of Island in the Son UMC on
Sunday, September 2nd. Jack joins us by profession of faith and David by reinstatement. Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself to Jack and David if you have not done so already!

Dinner Bunch Ends
The DINNER BUNCH as we have known it over the past several years has been disbanded. Some of those
who participated regularly still plan to get to-gether occasionally for some friendly food and fellowship - it just won’t be as a “church-sanctioned” group. Everyone is invited - ask around for time and place!

Laura Silva, Associate Pastor, FUMC-CC Scripture: Mark 9:30-37 Sermon: “When The Disciples Get It Right” Thesis: So many times in the Gospels the disciples were clueless about what Jesus was teaching. They were slow to understand Christ's fundamental purpose here on earth. This week we delve deeper into our role in history, as disciples in Christ, and what that means as we live out our lives in our individual and social constructs.
