The Joy of Being Your Pastor

In Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth he makes the following

statement: “When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that our faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.” - I Corinthians 2:1-5.

You would think as powerful a personality as Paul would revel in his ability to lead a church. You would think he would have an air of confidence in his ability to persuade people to come to Christ. You would think he would say, “Look at me, I have been ordained by God to carry His message, which means I’m good otherwise He would never have trusted me to preach His Word.”

However, Paul didn’t say that. He said I’m weak, fearful, unworthy and ill-equipped for this task. He said I need supernatural power to pull this off. I can’t do it within my own abilities; I need help. Help that only God can give me. Throughout his writings he says he was the “Jew of all Jews.” He knew the law backwards and forwards but it was all for naught. Paul knew without the power of the Holy Spirit behind his messages his preaching and writings would accomplish nothing.

I would never want to compare myself with Paul but I discovered early on in my ministry I couldn’t do what God called me to do without the power of the Holy Spirit. It was the Spirit that would woo the people and change their lives, not the

Cleanup Program!

Our concentration has been on publicity, and it's paying off. We made the front page of "The Island Moon," a program brochure has been prepared, the other Island churches have been contacted, a flyer was handed out at the Padre Island Business Association (PIBA) luncheon, and personal contacts were made at the PIBA mixer.

Kay Plut has not only been busy with trash pickup, she is also following up on a new and fun addition to the program. Diane Gierhan picks up trash with the help of Sassafras (standing behind Diane) and Razza-ma-tazz (at left, heading for the nearest trash bin). Inset at left is a few minutes’ worth of “treasure” collected from the beach in yellow, reusable mesh trash bags.

We also have some good news/bad news to report. The good news is that we have t w o H U G E trash bags of aluminum cans r e a d y f o r recycling that came directly off the beach. You know the bad news: we have two HUGE...Seriously, though, there is good news. The crews already report that less trash is left on the beach and more walkers and runners are personally joining the effort to do some pickup while they use the beach. Anything we pick up we keep out of the Gulf!

Several people passed out trash bags to beachgoers on Memorial Day weekend. This was our first opportunity to meet and greet the people where they play. Special nametags were prepared that highlight the church rather than the individual. IITS was seen by many over the weekend in a very positive way.

The ultimate benefit is service to God and His creation.

IITS UMW ended their year with a potluck luncheon on May 9. Secret Sisters exchanged gifts and members turned in Green Award points, with several women qualifying for the District Green award.

Meetings will resume on September 12 with a reorganizing focus. UMW activities will continue throughout the summer, including the Book Nook and visits to nursing homes. The membership pledged to support the new beach cleanup ministry with the purchase of bottled water. Women also are collecting colorful fabric pieces to be cut into quilt squares by St. Luke’s UMW, whose members are making quilts for orphaned children in the Philippines. Fabric may be placed in a bag on the left bottom shelf of the tallest bookcase in the Book Nook on or before June 3. Fabric will be taken to the UMW District luncheon. Four members of IITS group will represent our unit at this luncheon: Nancy Benson, Carol Eckles, Alice Marks and Nina Young.

Book Nook

Heartfelt thanks from UMW to all of you who are making the Book Nook such a success by contributing and buying books. This enables our unit to finance its mission projects with a monthly portion going to the church. We’ve had a request for large-print books.

“The grace card” Everything can change in an instant…and take a lifetime to unravel. Can two policemen, one angry at God over the loss of his son, and one a rising star on the force who is also a part-time pastor somehow join forces to help one another when it's impossible for either of them to look past their differences—especially the most obvious one?

Every day, we have the opportunity to rebuild relationships and heal deep wounds by extending and receiving God's grace.

Never underestimate the power of God's love.

Planning is underway for IITS Vacation Bible School, to be held in the evenings of August 5 through 9. This year’s curriculum is developed by Group Publishing and is titled “Sky: Everything Is Possible With God. (Mark 10:27).” This program is designed to help kids (and adults) explore God’s boundless love for his children. There will be a need for lots of volunteer help to make this a fun and inspiring VBS for all who attend, so we hope you will pray about where YOU can fit in!

In partnership with First United Methodist Church-Corpus Christi, several IITS members participated in a VBS fundraiser during Buc Days; we’ve received our share ($319.50) of the profits, so we’re off and running!
