Risks and ConsequencesOur Unit theme is called Risks and Consequences.
To help us understand what risks and consequences are, let’s do a quick activity.
Ticket Time!I will go around and give each student a ticket. That is
your ticket to use for today’s raffle.
I will then go around and ask each student if they would like to take a risk by using their ticket to win 10 tickets. You will have to guess the number I am thinking of. I will be thinking of a number between 1-15.

Build BackgroundSelection Summary Karana is accidently left behind when her people
flee the island on a ship. When no one comes back for her, she decides that she must make the journey home on her own. In a small leaky canoe, she risks her life on a long dangerous trip on the open sea. This of courage and determination shows that sometimes taking risks is necessary and that the results are worthwhile.
Background Information This story, although not true, is based on a true
story of a Native American girl who was left on an island near the coast of southern California and lived there alone for eighteen years.
An island is an area of land completely surrounded by water but not enough to be called a continent.
Sailors who travel the sea usually use a compass to help them navigate their ships. Before the compass was invented, sailors used the stars, especially the North star, to help them find their way.
