Grape TravelsBy Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

Exploring the epicenterof West Coast wine-making in Californiaand Oregon.

For the past several months, I’ve been writ-ing about a trip my husband and I took thissummer, exploring the many wine regionsof the United States and Canada in onelong road trip.

In the past, we’ve taken many trips solely devot-ed to one wine region or another. However, visiting multiple regions in one trip allowed usto compare and contrast the different regionsin a whole new way. Not only was this tremen-dous fun, but it also deepened our perspectiveon the nuances of vineyard location and man-agement. Here at Island Winery, we purchaseour grapes from vineyards around the world,so this new level of understanding was critical.

As we traveled though the northern wineregions of California, we were struck by howin such relatively short distances, factors suchas distance from the Pacific Ocean, elevationand amount of sunlight had such dramaticinfluences on the grapes. For example, winesmade from grapes grown on the SonomaCoast were quite different from wines a mere50 miles north and east of the coastal rangein the Potter Valley.

However, as we traveled a good distance north, across the mountainous regions of northernCalifornia and into the wide and fertileWillamette Valley of Oregon, we began to seehow latitude started to become the dominantinfluence.

Whether you learned about the WillametteValley in history class or by playing the videogame Oregon Trail, this area was the finalwestward destination for many settlers seekinga better life. Massive flooding during severalice ages created this broad, flat, fertile valley.Today, the Willamette Valley is coveted by

modern day grape growers justlike it was by the first settlerswilling to face extreme peril toreach this ideal farming valley.

The Willamette Valley has indeed gained world-class recognition over the last decade or sofor its decadent Pinot Noirs. Decades of exper-imentation with various Pinot Noir clones andfiguring out how to deal with the very wetweather have paid off. Highly skilled winemakershave now come into this region to put thefinishing touches on crafting a wine from thisvexing grape.

To say that there is an “Oregon Style” PinotNoir is a bit simplistic because the winemakerhas a lot of influence above and beyond whatis produced in the vineyards. However, in gen-eral, these wines do tend to be light-bodied,fruity and acidic, embodying all the character-istics of the cool, wet climate inherent in theirlatitude.

Although our travels to the Willamette Valleyhave given us a new found respect for thequality of Pinot Noirs produced in Oregon,we still prefer the riper, fuller bodied PinotNoirs grown in California, which is where wewill continue to buy our Pinot Noir grapes tomake our wines.

Save yourself a trip across the country and stopby Island Winery to sample our favorite expres-sions of the Pinot Noir grape. We have plentyof options for you to taste, to kick off the NewYear in style.

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at IslandWinery on Cardinal Road. Store and tast-ing hours are Monday through Saturdayfrom 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flightsand Cheese are available from 12:30 p.m.to 2:30 p.m. A Wine & Cheese HappyHour is offered Monday-Thursday startingat 4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 orislandwinery.com.

TAURUS Before you pass judgmenton others, take a good look at your-

self. Remember, everyone has his or herstrengths and weaknesses – even you. And,everyone’s are different. Think about it. Watchyour mouth this month or something you saycould offend a close friend.

GEMINI An unexpected turn ofevents early in the month disrupts

long-standing plans. Although this may befrustrating, it will be something you have to do.Use exercise as a way to stave off frustrations.A Libra friend offers words of encouragement.Use any free time to promote self-awareness.

CANCER Don’t sell yourself shortwhen it comes to business. Know

your value and be sure to present it in abeautifully wrapped package. You owe it toyourself. Discipline is the key to reachingfitness goals. A Leo has an unexpectedsurprise later in the month. A love relation-ship blossoms.

LEO Leos tend to get what they wantmore easily than most other members

of the zodiac. Your charms are usually hardto resist – usually, but not this month. Forgetabout using manipulative tricks and try adown-to-earth approach – especially ifyou’re dealing with Scorpio.

VIRGO You may have to choosebetween helping a friend and helping

yourself. Unless you’re one of the more inno-vative Virgos out there, you probably won’tfind a reasonable compromise. At work, make use of downtime in a productive way.Plan for busier times ahead.

LIBRA Tormented by yet anotherdifficult decision? Instead of weighing

the pros and cons over and over again, followyour heart. It’s where you’ll end up anyway,so why waste time? Just a few kind words willdo wonders for a down-in-the-dumps friend.Make the effort. Be careful of what you say.

SCORPIO Overstepping yourbounds in a friendship could lead to

hard feelings. Be aware of what you say andhow you say it. An old friend comes to you forsupport on a personal matter. Try to put your-self in his or her place before offering advice.Health-related problems need to be addressed.

SAGITTARIUS Quality time withyour partner helps ease recent tensions.

A special romantic effort goes a very longway. Young children play a big role later inthe month. A little Leo may do something towin your heart. A Libra’s good news givesyou something to smile about.

CAPRICORN Speak up,Capricorn, or you’ll never get what

you want. You can’t expect others to readyour mind. Be more assertive. This month an unpleasant reminder of your past makesyou happy for what you have today. AGemini friend helps put things intoperspective.

AQUARIUS Don’t be afraid toswallow your pride if it means saving

a valuable relationship. You’ll be glad youdid. Looking for a new job? If so, this couldbe an especially lucky month. Keep your eyesopen for a new opportunity. Remember, appearances can be deceiving.

PISCES Jumping to conclusionsbefore you know all the facts will steer

you in a totally wrong direction. Make aneffort to look at the big picture. An old flamewill be the focus of your thoughts mid-month.Use past mistakes to create a brighter romanticfuture. A break comes later in the month.

ONE OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND’S MOST POPULAR RESIDENTS, ATLANTIC BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS ARE ABUNDANT IN LOCAL WATERS.

In fact, these incredible marine mammals share so many characteristics with humans it can be argued theyare our underwater counterparts. One example is the way they give birth.

Female dolphins give live birth and nurse their young for up to three years. Calvesoften stay with the mother for up to five years, if male, and potentially the rest of

their lives, if female.

In the wintertime, the Bottlenose population averages from 200 to 400 animals.Early spring through late fall, we are inundated with dolphins as females from

all over the Southeastern coast make an annual trek to the area to give birth.Other females act as midwives and nannies, often taking turns watching over

the young as the mother feeds.

Males tag along, following the females wherever they go – yet anotherhuman trait!

From a boat, you will often see the young calves swimming and playingwith the other dolphins in the pod. Providing abundant food for themothers, Lowcountry waters also give the young dolphins a fairly

safe environment to practice swimming and hunting before movingon to other parts of the coast.

Although they lack the gracefulness of an adult dolphin, the calves’playfulness and energy tends to remind one of their own youth.

By Shawn Hern, Naturalist/Captain of DolphinDiscoveries, a division of Kayak Hilton Head.

RULES FOR THE ROAD

Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a

red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound yourwarning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend

In January and February, the lush greenhue of the marsh grass has long sincegiven way to its golden winter color. Inaddition, the cooler winter waters offerthe clearest water of the year in theLowcountry.

As the tides rise and fall, multitudes ofspeckled trout, redfish and flounder still offergreat angling opportunities for the inshoreangler all winter long. The most prolific timefor catching speckled trout is my favorite timeof year. Cooler climes coupled with a calmertime of year bring schools of the voracioustrout into our local waters.

Once located, almost every cast for the speckledtrout results in a bone-jarring strike. Beautifulwith their sleek silvery bodies sprinkled withdark spots, the resulting fight is tough, withoccasional topwater head shaking. The clearerwater also makes fishing with artificials moreproductive than live bait in the Lowcountry atthis time of year.

Blessed with a healthy population of redfishthat can be caught year-round, the clear winterwaters on Hilton Head Island also make thesepopular fish easier to catch with artificial bait.Pound for pound, the determined fight of theredfish is hard to beat amongst inshore dwellers.Like the trout, redfish respond to soft plasticsfished slowly along the bottom.

While not as plentiful as the trout and redfish,

flounder more readily attack the soft plastics. In fact, many flounder are “accidentally” caughtwhile fishing for trout or redfish. The slow retrieveand the scented Gulp baits – which work forany of the three species – seem to increase theodds of reeling in this tasty flatfish.

Often the fight can be a steady resistance asthe fish turns his flat body against your retrieve.Hold on tight, because when the floundersees the boat, the battle usually begins inearnest. Make sure to keep your net handy,as many flounder are lost by anglers trying tohoist them out of the water.

During the winter months, sheepshead arestill lurking around structures and pilings andcan be taken with fiddlers, if you can find them.Live shrimp also stimulate these notorious baitthieves. Fishing for sheepshead will steadilyimprove into late winter and early spring.

But that’s another story… Until then, tightlines!

Bobcats are the most populous and wide-spread of the wild cats in North America, numbering approximately three million fromcoast to coast. Although they have a largepopulation, however, these animals are noteasily spotted. Bobcats, still believed to roamwild on Hilton Head Island, have not beenreported in more than 10 years.

Lynx rufus are roughly twice the size of an aver-age house cat. They can grow to be nearly twofeet tall and can weigh up to 55 pounds. Theircoloration ranges from gray to red-brown, withspots and stripes along their lower half. Bobcatshave large ears with black tufts at the tips. Thisfeline’s common name references the cat’s sig-nature bobbed tail. In the wild, bobcats willgenerally live to be about15 years old. Theirearliest fossil records date their species at 1.8 mil-lion years old.

Bobcats are found in nearly every state andthroughout Canada and Mexico. As wintersbecome warmer, these wild cats have continuedto move northward. Their habitats range fromheavily forested areas to deserts and swamplands. In South Carolina, they are most commonly foundin bottomland forests of the coastal plains. Theyare mainly ground dwellers, creating dens outof the earth, old trees or under rock ledges.

Bobcats maintain individual territories which rangein size. Males will travel great distances to finda non-occupied territory while females generallysettle close to their mothers. Male territories mayoverlap with a number of female territories.Domains are maintained through scent markings.

Breeding begins when a female bobcat reachesone year of age, and when a male reaches two

years. Females will have one litter ayear between February and April. Onemale may mate with a number offemales during the season. Femaleshave a 63 day gestation period thatwill produce an average of threekittens. The kittens will leave the denafter four or five weeks, but they willstay with their mother for up to ninemonths. In the late fall, the motherand babies split up and lead solitary

lives until the next breeding season.

Bobcats are extremely elusive and rarely spottedby people. These cats are mostly nocturnal, butare also known to be quite active at sunset andsunrise. Using primarily their eyesight, bobcatshunt rats, mice, rabbits and squirrels. They aremost commonly small game predators, but arecapable of hunting an animal up to 10 times theirown body weight. Their pounce can extend upto 10 feet.

Bobcat fur is prized throughout the world. It islegal to hunt these felines throughout most ofNorth America, although bobcat hunting is reg-ulated. South Carolina’s bobcat hunting seasonruns from November 28 to March 1, without anylimits on the number of cats that can be taken.

However, habitat destruction is the leading causeof bobcat population decline. The increase of thecoyote population throughout North America isalso a factor in bobcat numbers since the twospecies compete over the same food resources.

Keep an eye out for this elusive feline, particularlyaround sunrise and sunset. You just might spot abobcat in the Lowcountry when you least expect it!

Get outside and learnabout these fascinatingevergreen trees.

Live Oak MajestyBy Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

As you look out over the Lowcountry salt marshin January and February, you will notice wideexpanses of dead marsh grass. The bright greenspartina of summertime has been transformedinto a brown, still savannah.

Along the shore, however, the trees look almostthe same as they do in the summer. The mar-itime forest is populated by several evergreentree species, the spearhead of which is theSouthern live oak. This fascinating tree speciesis deeply rooted in the ecology and history ofour area.

“Live oak” is often used to refer to any oak treewith evergreen foliage. Rather than losing itsleaves all at once, this majestic oak loses themgradually. As each leaf is lost, another onereplaces it, so the tree is never completely bare.

Evergreen oaks generally grow in warm climatesin North America and some parts of Europe.Live oaks in each region are different species.California live oaks are red oaks, while theSouthern live oak is a white oak.

White oaks like the Southern live oak have aunique ability to hybridize. Different species cancross-pollinate and produce functional seedsand fertile offspring. These hybrid offspringcan continue to reproduce between types, resulting in multiple variations andhybridizations.

Southern live oaks are generally wider thanthey are tall and have a long lifespan. Theirwood is incredibly strong and their branchestwist out from their trunks. The shape of theirbranches made the live oak popular for shipbuilding in early America. Before technologywas developed to steam and shape wood forboat hulls, builders had to find the rightshapes for hulls in the branches of the oaks.

Trees that were taller and straighter wereused for planking.

One such ship was the USS Constitution, which is the oldest commissioned naval vesselstill afloat. It was launched in 1797 on ordersfrom George Washington. Throughout itslong career, this legendary vessel wasrepaired many times, most recently in themid-1990s. For this restoration, live oak treesfelled to build Hilton Head Island’s CrossIsland Parkway were used to rebuild damagedhull parts.

Due to their long lifespan, live oaks can growto enormous size in the right conditions. Thereare several famous live oaks throughout theSouth. Most are famous for their size and age, such as the Angel Oak in Charleston and theSeven Sisters Oak in Louisiana.

In nearby Bluffton, South Carolina, there is anoak famous not only for its size, but for its his-torical significance as well. Called SecessionOak, this monster tree served as the site of readings by U.S. Representative RobertBarnwell Rhett, who was one of the fathers ofthe secession movement in the 1840s and1850s.

All over Hilton Head Island, you can see thebeautiful live oak tree twisting its branchestowards the ground. Since they are salt watertolerant, they can grow close to saltwater creeksand inlets.

How to make the most of your game in 2014.

Golf Tips For The New YearBy Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

As we kick off 2014 on Hilton Head Island, this is an ideal time of year to make NewYear’s resolutions.

Hopefully one of your resolutions is to becomea better golfer. Whether you’re just learning toplay or you’ve been teeing off for decades, it’simportant to realize that golf is a sport that cantake a lifetime to perfect. There are always newways to refine your swing, perfect your putt andimprove your score.

Here are a few of my top tips for 2014, to helpyou make the most of your time on the green:

Remember, golf isn’t about building yourupper arm strength or developing yourmuscle mass. It’s about allowing your body tostay relaxed and to allow the club to do its job.Respect the weight of the club, keep your bodyloose and keep your elbows close to your body.I recommend you stretch daily starting with yourhips, hamstrings and wrists.

Don’t let the little muscles in your hands, wrist and forearms provide the power forthe swing. When you use those small muscles, your club and your swing get out of rhythm andsync. The body’s larger, slow-twitch muscle fibersare more dependable under pressure. They pro-vide the consistency you need to hit more shotswith greater accuracy on the green and the fair-way. When you swing slow the ball goes fast. When you feel out of control you are in control.

Think positive. So much of golf is mental andpsychological. Feed relaxed, affirmative thoughtsto your subconscious mind in order to maximizeyour swing. If you let those encouraging subliminalmessages guide you and apply solid fundamen-tals to your game, you’ll be able to succeed onthe green. Try our Mental Golf Workshop Class.

To improve your loft on to the green, focuson clipping the tee rather than lifting theball up in the air. Don’t struggle with indeci-

siveness. Instead, remember that golf is a game of opposites. When you swingdown, the ball automatically goes up.Don’t lift the ball with your wrist, as manygolfers tend to do. Instead, trust the loft

and let the club do the work. You’ll learn toimpart backspin and be much more pleasedwith the results.

Adjust your grip depending upon the shot. For smaller shots, grip the club down low, putyour weight on your left foot and use a modestbackswing. For bigger shots, be sure to grip theclub up high, widen your stance, use a long backswing and transfer your weight back and forwardfor more power.

Your short game is where you have agreatest opportunity to reduce your overallscore. I invite you to take my Shortgame 1 Classat the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy, which willhelp you refine your skills. Practice really doesmake perfect!

Have a strategy for windy conditions. Mostplayers swing harder in an attempt to counter thewind. However, trying to hit the stuffing out of theball to compensate for a breeze is a counterpro-ductive strategy. Here’s why: The harder the swing, the more spin on the ball, which is only exagger-ated by the wind. Better to swing according tothe old axiom, “Nice and easy when it’s breezy,”than to try to hit the ball through the wind.

Even though January and February can get chilly, the golf courses on Hilton Head Island are stillgreen and welcoming. While courses up northare covered with snow, we’re still able to tee offon some of the world’s most acclaimed champi-onship courses all winter long.

Make the most of your time on this course thisseason. I'll see you out on the green!

A former PGA Tour pro, Doug Weaver is theDirector of Instruction at the Palmetto DunesGolf Academy. He conducts “Where Doesthe Power Come From?,” a free clinic anddemonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m.(843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 orpalmettodunes.com.
