ISO/TS 16949:2009 The uniform basis for certifications in automotive industry and for subsuppliers Motivation and benefits ISO/TS 16949:2009 is a standard in automotive industry that is recognized world-wide. This standard has signifi- cantly contributed to making the requirements placed on management systems in automotive industry more uni- form. In earlier times multiple certifications had to be con- ducted. For in different European countries and America, there were different standards, such as QS 9000 in the US, VDA 6.1 in Germany, EAQF in France and AVSQ in Italy, and these standards were not recognized one with the other. Today ISO/TS 16949:2009 is recognized by all the automobile manufacturers world-wide and partly even compulsory for certification (Tier 1 Suppliers). Today an organization will automatically also meet the re- quirements of ISO 9001:2008 as well as the basic expec- tations of many automobile manufacturers and supplier industry as a whole once it has been certified acc. to ISO/ TS 16949:2009. ISO/TS 16949:2009 certification can exclusively be per- formed by certification bodies that are recognized and accredited by IATF (International Automotive Task Force) and by specially qualified auditors. At the moment ISO/TS 16949:2009 is a harmonized stan- dard, which includes the requirements the most important automobile manufacturers world-wide place on quality management systems. It is a matter of strategically further developing quality management based on ISO 9001:2008 by integrating the additional requirements automotive in- dustry places in management and structure. Today many automobile manufacturers absolutely require certification acc. to ISO/TS 16949:2009 as a prerequisite for being admitted to the pool of suppliers. This requirement also specifies it is necessary to demonstrate that all the sup- pliers that are part of the supply chain must, at least, be certified acc. to ISO 9001:2008 and further have proces- ses and operations conforming to ISO/TS 16949:2009. Motivation and benefits

ISO/TS 16949:2009 is a standard in automotive industry

that is recognized world-wide. This standard has signifi-

cantly contributed to making the requirements placed on

management systems in automotive industry more uni-

form. In earlier times multiple certifications had to be con-

ducted. For in different European countries and America,

there were different standards, such as QS 9000 in the

US, VDA 6.1 in Germany, EAQF in France and AVSQ in

Italy, and these standards were not recognized one with

the other. Today ISO/TS 16949:2009 is recognized by all

the automobile manufacturers world-wide and partly even

Criteria

ISO/TS 16949:2009 is a technical specification (TS),

which has been created by IATF (International Automotive

Task Force), JMA (Japan Automotive Manufacturers As-

sociation) and representatives of ISO/TC 176 on the basis

of ISO 9001:2008.

ISO/TS 16949:2009 includes the harmonized specific re-

quirements QS-9000, VDA 6.1, AVQS and EAQF place

on QM Systems, the standards referring to subsuppliers

in automotive industry.

The additional requirements placed by ISO/TS 16949:

2009 are, in addition to the relevant clauses of ISO

9001:2008, stated in a separate document (Quality ma-

nagement systems - Particular requirements for the ap-

plication of ISO 9001:2008 for automotive production and

relevant service part organizations). The requirements of

ISO 16949:2009 include:

n strategic business planning

n further development of the improvement process

n stable process capability

n reducing scatter and wastage in the supply chain

n optimizing the value added chain; and, in addition to

the standards existing up to now

n establishing a procedure enabling compliance with le-

gal provisions, people motivation and continual impro-

vement

Accreditation

Quality Austria Training, Certification and Evaluation

GmbH has been accredited by IATF since 01/2001. Qua-

lity Austria Training, Certification and Evaluation GmbH is

the first Austrian certification body to be accredited for

ISO/TS 16949 by IATF.
