Subjects: using the correct place name
For subject cataloguing we always use the most current place name in order to keep all materials together*
Belgian Congopreferred term is Congo (Democratic Republic)
*e.g. of complex situation is Russia – Soviet Union – Russia (Federation) which is not actually a name change so all 3 used, depending on scope of the book!
Authors with common names
Author: George Bush (current president)We have multiple items by nine different people with the name George Bush.
Browse will give you a list of authorized terms and you can often pinpoint the one you need by looking at date information and initials:
Bush, George W. (George Walker), 1946-
Authors with translated/transliterated names
Author: Foucault, Michael
Preferred term: Foucault, Michel
Author: Sun Tse (Sun Tze, Sun Ze, Sun Tzu)

Corporate authors with name changes
In cataloguing we use the corporate body name that is current to the document. Users may not know what the name was at time of publication.
The reference structure allows you to follow the history of the name changes if you have difficulty finding a publication.
