Towards sustainable health care systemsStrategies in health insurance schemes in France, Germany, Japan and theNetherlandsEditors: Klaus-Dirk Henke, Jonas Schreyögg

The cost of health care is growing while the revenue base has remained constant, orin some cases, has even shrunk in recent years. Medical progress, ageing and manyother factors have contributed to this growing gap. Neither the pay-as-you-go, nor thetax-financed systems have proven to be capable of being able to regulate themselvesquasi automatically to address growing financing concerns. Major reforms are eithertoo difficult in an increasingly complex system or are politically unmanageable in ahighly sensitive area such as health care. Patchwork repair is the reality everywhere. This daunting situation describes why in Europe and in Japan the public is calling formore substantial and longer lasting reforms. This study identifies certain lessons, and questions whether competition or regulations are appropriate vehicles to tacklethe widespread problems faced by many health care systems.

Asbestos: Towards a worldwide banBrochure

The purpose of this brochure of ISSA’s Special Commission on Prevention is to remindthe reader that whilst asbestos may still be seen as a “miracle mineral”, it is above alla time bomb and the moment has now come to ban it once and for all. The brochureseeks to alert decision-makers and all the social partners of the devastatingconsequences, both human and economic, which any short-termist policy would bringin the decades ahead. It thus provides some useful information about the origin, production and use of asbestos. It looks into the health effects of asbestos, the cost ofasbestos-related diseases and what to do with asbestos-containing materials whichare already in place or when there is an urgent need to remove them. Finally, itdemonstrates that asbestos can always be replaced by a range of substitute products.ISBN 92-843-1175-6 2006 36 pp. E,F,S,G,A,CN
