OCTOBER 28, 2018 - 3 - THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

My deepest thanks to all parishioners of St. Timothy parish for all you do to increase charity and to take on sacrifice.

$0.57 CHURCHA little girl stood near a small church from which she had been turned away because it was “too crowded.” “I can’t go to Sunday School,” she sobbed to the pastor as he walked by. Seeing her shabby unkempt appearance, the pastor guessed the reason and, taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday school class. The child was so happy that he found room for her, and she went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place to worship Jesus. Some two years later, this child lay dead in one of the poor tenement buildings. Her parents called for the kindhearted pastor who had befriended their daughter to handle the final arrangements. As her poor little body was being moved, a worn and crumpled red purse was found which seemed to have been rummaged from some trash dump. Inside was found 57 cents and a note, scribbled in childish handwriting, which read: “This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday School.” For two years she had saved for this offering of love. When the pastor tearfully read the note, he knew instantly what he would do. Carrying this note and the cracked, red pocketbook to the pulpit he told the story of her unselfish love and devotion. He challenged his deacons to get busy and raise enough money for the larger building. But the story does not end there . . . A newspaper learned of the story and published it. It was read by a wealthy realtor who offered them a parcel of land worth many thousands. When told that the church could not pay so much, he offered to sell it to the little church for 57 cents. Church members made large donations. Checks came from far and wide. Within five years, the little girl’s gift had increased to $250,000—a huge sum for that time (near the turn of the century). Her unselfish love had paid large dividends. When you are in the city of Philadelphia, look up Temple Baptist Church, with a seating capacity of 3,300. and be sure to visit Temple University, where thousands of students are educated. Have a look, too, at the good Samaritan Hospital and at a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of beautiful children, built so that no child in the area will ever need to be left outside during Sunday School time. In one of the rooms of this building may be seen a picture of the sweet face of the little girl, whose 57 cents, so sacrificially saved, made such remarkable history. Alongside of it is a portrait of her kind pastor, Dr. Russell H. Conwell, author of the book, “Acres of Diamonds.” This is a true story, which goes to show WHAT GOD CAN DO WITH 57 CENTS.

HEARING - LOOP - BASICS HOW DOES A HEARING LOOP WORK? Through the use of a loop amplifier & strategically placed wire around the room that transmits directly into a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil installed in it. WHAT IS A T-COIL? A T-coil is a small metal rod with metal wire wrapped around it that is installed in a hearing aid which is necessary to receive the Loop signal. The other purpose of the T-coil is to make using the telephone easier by eliminating the high pitched interference you may hear when putting the phone to your ear. HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A T-COIL? The T-coil program, necessary for use with the Loop System is one that is manually activated by the user. This is done by either pressing a button on the hearing aid or by use of a remote control. You may presently be pressing this button to use the telephone. If you are uncertain if you have a T-coil program, consult with your hearing professional as you may have one but it may not be activated. CAN MY HEARING AID BE RETROFITTED FOR THE T-COIL? Yes, in many cases. Consult with your hearing professional or hearing aid manufacturer to confirm. IS THE FIELD IT CREATES, SAFE FOR A PACEMAKER? Yes, the electromagnetic field it creates is not strong enough to affect a user.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD PANTRY BACKPACK PROGRAM

The 2018/2019 school year began early August and our Backpack Program is well underway. Last year we delivered 5,280 food packets to the Fruitland Park Elementary School. The children who receive the weekend food packets

are those the school system identifies as in need of additional nutrition. So far this year we are providing food to approximately 130 children each weekend.

This program is made possible and is successful due to the many generous contributions of both financial support and food items from parishioners and by the many volunteers who help organize, pack, and deliver the packets to the school.

You may help again this year by making a monetary contribution (put check payable to St. Vincent de Paul Society in an envelope marked “backpack program” and drop it in the collection basket). Monetary contributions are most helpful as they allow us to purchase backpack items in bulk. If you would prefer donating food items, we are always in need of single serve size applesauce, fruit cups, vienna sausage, and cereal.

Thanks you and God Bless You for your generosity.

CATECHISM CORNER:HOW TO EAT AN ELEPHANT

Article 27 (CCC): The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness

he never stops searching for. REFLECTION

Recall the parable of the prodigal son who is slowly plodding toward his father’s house after he had squandered his father’s inheritance unfruitfully. He is filled with doubt and hesitation. He does not yet know that his father has seen him and is running toward him.

99 WAYS TO EVANGELIZE AS A CATHOLIC

36. Stand against moral degeneration of our nation. 37. Call evil by name. “Be not afraid” is mentioned 153 times in

the bible in one expression or another. It is the most mentioned phrase in the Bible.

38. Make time for others. Be accessible to them. 39. Send cards to the sick and bereaved. 40. Say less. Think before you quip. Does it glorify God?
