AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS Commercial Aircraft Airbus begins U.S. production of A220 aircraft

On August 5, Airbus officially began manufacturing the A220 in the u.S. The first team of A220 production workers began work at Airbus’ Mobile, Alabama-based production facility follow-ing their recent return from on-the-job training in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada, where the A220 program and primary final assembly line are located. Airbus had announced plans for the addition of A220 manufacturing in Mobile in October 2017. Construction on the main A220 flowline hangar and other support buildings for the new A220 began at the Mobile Aeroplex, Brookley at the beginning of this year. Airbus is producing the first few aircraft within some current A320 family buildings and newly built support hangars. The first u.S.-made A220 – an A220-300 destined for Delta Air Lines – is scheduled for delivery in Q3 2020. By the middle of next decade, the facility will produce between 40 and 50 A220 aircraft per year.

ST Engineering’s Aerospace arm passes new milestone in aircraft interiors and seats business with STC

ST Engineering’s Aerospace sector has reached a new milestone in its aircraft interior business by successfully attaining a Supplemental Type Cer-tificate (STC) from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for a cabin interior modification and refurbishment program that involves the in-stallation of its in-house-designed economy class seat, SPACElite I. The program was carried out on an A320 aircraft for a Cambodian airline, and is the first time that ST Engineering has retrofitted a cabin using seats of its proprietary design. At just under 11kg, SPACElite I is among the lightest in its class. Apart from helping airlines to save on fuel and operating cost, SPACElite I also incorpo-rates features – such as an innovative articulat-ing seat pan that allows for large shin clearance and lumbar cushion using suspension fabric for back support – to provide maximum space and comfort for passengers. The design won the G Mark stamp of approval by Japan’s prestigious Good Design Award in 2018 and is certified to EASA Technical Standard Order including the lat-est Head Injury criterion.

The Lufthansa Technik Group is substantially increasing its commitment to training young people in Germany: 246 new traditional and dual-study trainees have joined the company – an increase of 55% over the previous year. In view of the Group’s positive economic development as well as the fact that many employees will soon reach retirement age, Lufthansa Technik has already decided to add a further 50 training slots in 2020. All told, Lufthansa Technik is now home to 616 young people on their way to professions in technical aircraft services, industrial engineering or aircraft logistics. Given the increasingly narrow market, the company has already started the application process for 2020 in an effort to reach young people who are personally and profes-sionally suitable for the training slots on offer. In 2019, 135 young people will start their training in Hamburg, 78 in Frankfurt, 14 in Arnstadt, 14 in Alzey and five in Munich. Applicants were able to choose between 16 different professions and dual-study programs. Of the 246 new training and university slots, 186 are directly with Lufthansa Technik. Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey, the Lufthansa Technik Group company that focuses on overhauling smaller jet and propeller engines and is still growing strongly, has taken on 13 new aircraft mechanic trainees with a specialty in engine technology and one dual-study trainee with a specialty in mechanical engineering. The company is thus once again expanding its capacity, bringing the total to 39 slots. Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services (LTLS) has 28 new trainees for the future-oriented profession of ware-house logistics specialist as well as two people training to become specialists for forwarding and logistics services. With a total of 83 training slots, Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services has the largest training program in the Lufthansa Technik Group aside from its parent company. With a total of 46 trainees, N3 also plays an important role as a training company. LEOS (Lufthansa Engineering and Operational Services) is giving two future mechatronics engineers the chance to join the leading provider of aircraft-related ground handling services. The percentage of women among this year’s new trainees stands at just over 12%, which is more than two percentage points above the previous year, but still too low. Lufthansa Technik will therefore persist in its efforts to attract women in particular to technical careers with a promising future.

Pegasus Airlines signs exclusive engine maintenance deal with SR Technics

MRO service provider SR Technics has entered into an exclusive CFM56-5B engine mainte-nance deal with Pegasus Airlines, the second-largest carrier in Turkey. With services scheduled to begin in September of this year, the agreement covers 22 engine shop visits and an SR Technics lease engine dedicated to Pegasus Airlines over a six-year contract term. All work will be performed at the SR Technics engine shop in Zurich. As a growing low-cost carrier in a competitive market, Pegasus Airlines was looking for an MRO provider that could supply en-gine core performance and overhaul services as well as support unscheduled engine removals. During the negotiations leading up to the agreement, SR Technics performed two shop visits. The efficiency and rapid turnaround of the work SR Technics performed, combined with the strong relations between key people at both companies, contributed to the decision to make SR Technics the carrier’s exclusive CFM56-5B maintenance provider.

gine-maker’s half-year losses but is still strug-gling with ongoing woes concerning its trou-bled Trent 1000 engine. The Group reported statutory interim pre-tax losses of £791 million against £1.2 billion a year ago. On an under-lying basis, half-year profits rose 16% to £94 million for the six months to June 30, while operating profits jumped 32% to £203 million. Customer disruption was still being caused by the Trent 1000 problems which has seen the Group raise its estimated in-service costs by a further £100 million over the next three years. The Trent 1000’s technical issues have persist-ed since 2018 and has proved to be a major problem for Boeing, whose 787 Dreamliner jet is powered by this problematic engine. Rolls-Royce has had to make an additional £59 million charge relating to Airbus’ decision to cease production of the A380 superjumbo jet, taking the total hit on that aircraft to £245 million. However it backed its 2019 guidance for underlying operating profit and free cash flow of £700 million, plus or minus £100 mil-lion. Commenting on the Group’s half-year result, Chief executive Warren East said: “We delivered further progress across the group in the first half in line with our full-year expecta-tions. We have made good progress on resolv-ing the Trent 1000 compressor issue, though, regretfully, customer disruption remains. Progress on our restructuring programme is in line with the plan we outlined a year ago.” The group is currently in the process of a ma-jor overhaul with approximately 2,500 jobs cut from a targeted 4,600 as the Group is aiming to save £400 million by 2020. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has tentatively approved a request by Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic to launch an expanded joint venture for all services between the united States and Europe. The expanded joint venture would replace two previously ap-proved arrangements in the U.S.-United Kingdom and u.S.-continental Europe markets. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The International Air Transport As-sociation (IATA) has released data for global air freight markets showing that demand, meas-ured in freight ton kilometers (FTKs), decreased by 4.8% in June 2019, com-pared to the same period in 2018. This marks the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year de-cline in freight vol-umes.Signs of a modest recovery in recent months appear to have been prema-ture, with the June contraction broad-based across all re-gions with the exception of Africa. Capacity growth remains subdued and the cargo load factor continues to fall. Globally, trade growth is languishing, and business uncertainty is compounded by the latest tariff increases in the u.S.-China trade dispute. “Global trade continues to suffer as trade tensions—particularly between the u.S. and China—deepen. As a result, air cargo markets continue to contract. Nobody wins a trade war. Borders that are open to trade spread sustained prosperity. That’s what our political leaders must fo-cus on,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. Airlines in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East once again suffered the sharpest declines in year-on-year growth in total air freight volumes in June 2019. Africa was the only region to show any growth. Asia-Pacific airlines saw demand for air freight contract by 5.4% in June 2019, compared to the same period in 2018. North American airlines’ freight demand decreased by 4.6% in June 2019, compared to the same period a year earlier. Capacity increased by 1.9% over the past year. European airlines posted a 3.6% decrease in freight demand in June 2019 compared to the same period a year earlier. Comparatively strong cargo volumes within Europe are helping to minimize the impact of weaker German exports. Capacity in-creased by 2.8% year-on-year. Middle Eastern airlines’ freight volumes decreased 7.0% in June 2019 compared to the year-ago period. Capacity increased by 2.7%. Latin Ameri-can airlines experienced a decrease in freight demand in June 2019 of 1.0% compared to the same period last year and capacity increased by 4.6%. African carriers were the only ones to report growth in June 2019, with an increase in demand of 3.8% compared to the same period a year earlier. This makes Africa the strongest performer for the fourth consecutive month. Capacity grew 16.6%.
