We are delighted to launch fresh and hope that you enjoy the same balance ofinternational and local content that we applied to our earlier publication ofbaseLINE™. We’ve renewed contact with loyal supporters in the industry pluswelcomed some new names to our mailing list and hope that the list willcontinue to grow.

It was a pleasure to see the Designz® Cup get underway again and the challengeof creating a design that captures the spirit of the musical has had somebreathtaking results. Our judge Alan Randell-Smith has been impressed by theunexpected interpretations of favourites like Phantom of the Opera in the statesof NSW, Queensland and South Australia. It’s been pleasing to reignite supportfrom the latter and the Queensland leg of the Cup was especially successfulwith such a large number of entries.

Thanks to all Floristry coordinators and the training venues who’ve promotedthis opportunity for recognition to our next generation of florists. We wish Perthparticipants the best of luck on September 28th and Melbourne entrantslikewise in October after which a decision will be made about the overallAustralian winner. As promised we will report on results as well as includephotos of competitions where space permits and we appreciate the efforts thatall entrants have made to meet the conditions of entry.

July was full of inspiration as we whirled around the major capital cities ofAustralia introducing Neil Whittaker to audiences. In September he will competein the Europa Cup of Floristry to be held in Slovenia so we were fortunate hecould fit us into his tight schedule. We can’t wait to see photos of his freeexpression arrangement based on the children’s book character of PippiLongstocking. This loveable ratbag was developed by Astrid Lindgren and herbooks have remained popular for decades.

The constantly evolving range of OASIS® Floral Products have also been touringaround India, Vietnam and the Philippines. Richard Go wowed the crowds inMumbai in early July while Neil inspired Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi audienceson his way back to the UK in August. Around the same time Mark Pampling wasdazzling participants in his Davao workshops and these will be featured in oursecond issue of fresh.

We are grateful to all designers for theirfine work and stamina during these hectictours and hope that you enjoy the photos included in this issue. We wish Neil Whittaker the very best of luck in the Europa Cup and look forward to hearing some of his Slovenian stories after the event.

Twelve years ago Tracy, with her husbandFrank, started The Tomlinson FlowerCompany in Coventry, giving Tracy thefreedom to create her own style of designand nurture her clientele. Now Tracy, aChelsea Gold Medallist, judges floristrythroughout Europe and her skills as adesigner and demonstrator are renowned.

Tracy’s shop is smart, modern and chic;with clean lines and an uncluttered lookwhere the emphasis is on fabulousflowers. Bright lighting, colourcoordinated themes and ever-changingwindow displays all entice the customersinside. Sympathy sales are the greatestpart of Tracy’s business and she loves toget stuck into full coffin sprays usingmasses of lovely flowers. After this it’s giftdesigns and with a good regular customerbase and contract arrangements theproducts vary from traditional basketarrangements to contemporary styles.Tracy says her pick up trade used to be

From his arrival in Perth on the 15th July untilhis departure from Melbourne on the 31st NeilWhittaker was mesmerising. He successfullychoreographed demonstrations to over ninehundred people and along the way conductedMaster Classes in five major cities.

The Perth class was the first to be booked outand the eager students were not disappointed.Neil showcased his clever techniques withOASIS® Aluminium, Bullion and Metallic wirecreating elaborate bouquets, corsages andtable arrangements. Yet these techniques areeasily managed by the busy florist.

Always balancing commercial viability withtime constraints Neil strikes the perfect blend.His classes proved that often a designappearing very complex may be completeddays in advance of an important event like awedding. Once the fresh flowers are addedevery single design becomes unique and thisconcept of individuality is a big winner forbrides.

Participants in all Neil’s classes left withdesigns spilling from their arms. They werealso united in their personal and professionalappreciation. From Perth to Adelaide toSydney to Brisbane and finally MelbourneNeil’s audiences have been paying tribute.

Their only remaining question was, “Will he be back?”

Neil conducted a workshop for eighty-fivepeople in Ho Chi Minh City over two daysand introduced the dazzling potential ofOASIS® Aluminium and Metallic wires to anew audience. They loved it andexperimented with headdresses and wristcorsages until Neil was wired out.

The second day participants werearranged into eight groups to complete a

design around a given theme and prizeswere awarded while Neil was on hand toassist at all times. He introducedEuropean bridal flower trends during ademonstration and the locals werefascinated.

Then came Hanoi. 250 participantscrowded the half-day event to witnessNeil in action and many of his twenty

designs featured OASIS® Aluminium andBullion Wires. Once again these were a hitand Dalat Hasfarm should becongratulated on their supply of OASIS®

Floral Products along with profuseamounts of stunning flowers.

After five days in this exotic country itwas time to leave and Neil is currentlyrecuperating in the UK.

Vietnam may be a visual banquet for most visitors but for Neil Whittaker it was an opportunity to respond to the localindustry’s thirst for his knowledge and experience.

Excitement levels grew as Richardenergetically manoeuvred Orchids, Liliesand Hyacinths into a production line ofcontemporary designs. All were carefullyconstructed around the requirements oftraditional Indian ceremonies yet theyretained spontaneity.

Richard’s vitality produced manyexhilarating components and numerousgarlands that are all essential to the stagethat forms the focal point of most Indianweddings. The crowd was intoxicated bythe flow of variations they were witnessing

and Richard maintained a hectic pacedespite one hundred percent humidity.Finally it was over.

A crescendo of clapping and a standingovation ensured that Richard Go’s work willbe long remembered in India. His personalamazement at the large number of peoplein his production-team has now subsidedand he greatly appreciated all their efforts.Smithers-Oasis (India) is similarlyappreciative and hopes that perhapsRichard Go will return one day wheneveryone has recovered.

The backdrop for Helen and Gareth’s wedding was Gibside Chapelin the Derwent Valley, a National Trust Park that boasts a PalladianChapel with unusual three-tiered pulpit. A great place to show offHelen’s creative talents on her wedding day.

Sublime colouring with Feeling Green Roses, sensational Gloriosa,Garnet Glow Callas and Phalaenopsis Omega created a sweepingelegant bouquet for Helen and formed the floral theme of thewedding. Helen’s stunning headdress made with pipped Gloriosa,grasses and Senecio Rowleyanus tumbled down the back of herhead from an elegant Orchid topping.

Echoing the theme the pretty bridesmaids in classy mint greendresses held fabulous bouquets with long Steel Grass handles anddelightful bead edged tops. Flowers lined the balustrades andedged the staircases tumbling over banisters and at the receptiontall candlelit decorations took centre stage.
