WetrytorevivalSlovenianSF&Fsceneafter20-yearlongperiod, but this ismuchpainful for all of uswhoareworkingonit.Sloveniaisindependentcountryover20yearsandsomuchtimewealsoneededtotravelonEurocon.FestivalZagreb2012wasours irstparticipa-tion.Kiev2013 isstill suspended in theair.Why?Ourscene,bothamateuraswellascreative,vegetatesintheundergroundofSlovenianculturallandscape.Socalled“the established culture” does not recognize us as theculture. Consequently, we are systematically ignoringandpushingaway.Wedonothavemagazinesasare in culturaldevel-opedcountries.Wedonothavepublishingcompaniesfor the supportof local authors.Domesticwork is theexceptionrather than therule in the localbookstores.Of course, the problem is also in the production side.Most of the works come out in the form of semi-inished products. The authors have only costs withtheirworks.Theonlyformsofperiodic issuesarefan-zines which print domestic works. But unfortunatelyalsohereisatotalpoverty.BytheendoflastyearJashubegenJered(NewsfromOtherworld Universe) was the sole fanzine with ISSNnumber. This year fortunately resurrected fanzineNeskoncnost(In inity),editedbyPrizma(Prism,Socie-tyofSF&Ffans).NowbothfanzinesresideintheportalDrugotnost(OtherworldUniverse).Lastyear,afterfewyears of hibernation,was published new anthology ofdomesticcreativityZvezdniprah2012(Stardust2012).WhoisSlovenianwinnerofESFS(EuropeanSFSociety)foryear2012nobodyknows.Notevenonesigni icant

The basic starting point andfoundationof ilmmusicisRichardWagner. Also a collective Laibachitself was the inspiration for themovie. But Wagner was the onlyoneof the subjects in thismilitaryinvasion of Nazis from the darkside of the Moon. They also playwith other “taboos”. This is also the place where Iheard about the Eurocon in Zagreb. We meet once amonth in a restaurant, we chat about science- iction,eat, drink and enjoy a short program. This could be aspeech on any science- iction topic or astronomy, areading, an introduction of a local publisher, a reportonaconvention,etc.ButwhatIthinkthemostremark-ablethisisthattheclubgoeswayback.Itwasfoundedin1955.Andstillmostofthepeoplearefoundingmem-bers or joined only a short time after the birth of theSFGW. I love this community, as it seems to be a fanclubthatcanbeanimportantpartofyourlifefordec-ades.Thatis,inmyopinion,ararepleasure.Science- ictionandfantasyawardsToputitbluntly,therearenoseriousgenreawardshereinAustria.Saynomore.Butasweshareourmoth-ertonguewiththeGermans,Austrianauthorscanpar-ticipate in most of the German awards. There is theDeutscherScienceFictionPreisforscience- ictionshortstories and novels. Decisions aremade by a jury. Theprizeforthewinnersis1000Euroineachcategory.AnotherGermanaward is theDeutscherPhantastikPreis.Apublicvotedecideson thewinners there.Theaward ishonoring fantasy,horrorandscience- ictionliterature,coverdesignandwebpages.Anotherimportantscience- ictionawardistheKurd-Laßwitz-Preis.Thisonestandssomewhereinbetweenthe irsttwoawards–thereisnorealjury,andalsonopublicvote.Thepersonsincharge,whoareallowedtodecideonthewinningauthors, irsthavetoprovecom-mitmenttoscience- iction.

I do not know how famous Perry Rhodan isoutside the German-speaking countries (although ithad been translated into many languages, includingeven Japanese), so I will explain for everyone: PerryRhodan,namedafterthemainprotagonist,isascience-ictionseriesoriginallypublishedinbooklets–lotsandlots of booklets. It used to be very popular whenmyDadwasstillaschoolboy.Icanperfectlyrememberhisnarrations on the excitement he felt about the newphantastic issues introduced in the booklets, and thejuveniledespairwhenhisMum,followingtheadviceofmyDad’steacher,threwthemaway.Youhavetoknowthat at this time inAustria stories like thePerryRho-dan ictionwasconsideredtobesecondclassliteraturethatwouldspoilchildren.Today,therearealsosoft-andhardcoverbookspub-lished,aswellasaudiobooks. Ievenhadtoring thedoorbell (!) togetintothebuilding.MyfriendandIwereclimbingthe

stairsandcheckedeach loor,butonlyordinary latsofprivatepersonscameinsight.Infact,themeetingwastakingplaceinthebasement,aswe indoutafteralongtime of searching. Itwas kind of creepy getting downthere,andwhenwe inallyencounteredtheotherfans,I noticed that there were only a very few womenamongtheguests.Mycompanionwhisperedinmyear:'Hereareoldmenonly!'However, we stayed for a while. Slovenian prize “Drejček in trije marsovčki” for best fantasy story 2011-2012) Hereachedouthishandandgrabbedawoodenpil-lar. All the construction below him was dangerouslyshaking in the rhythmofhis climbing.Hehasclimbedthetreesmanytimes.Butthiswasdifferent,moreun-pleasantandunnatural.

“Do not look down! Absolutely do not look down!” hesaidtohimself.Heclimbedalmostwithhiseyesclosedand held his chin up in hope that his curiositywouldnotbeathimandhewould lookdown.Withbare feetheclungontothethinbeams,whichwerebuiltforsup-port.Finally,hesteppedonanarrowboard,onthelastone,whichwasontopofthescaffolding.Sittingonithecouldreachthesphereatthetipofthecastletower.From the bottom of his heart he hated themaster,whohad senthimuphere.His stomachwasgrowlingandhisfearoffallingfoggedhismind.“Youwilleatwhenyoucomedown!Inthatwayyouarelessheavyandyouwillclimbtothetopfaster,”hadsaid the master mockingly when he had complainedabout his hunger. Then, suddenly, themaster had hitthebackofhisneckwitha lathandandhiseyeshadblurredforamoment.“Come on! Let's go!” the master had commandedsharply.Therehadbeennootherchoice,buttoobey.Atirstitwashard,andthenitwaseasier.Hejustwasn’tallowedtolookdownintothedepth.Sonowhewasonthetop.Hesatonanarrowboard.Abrushwithmetalbris-tles was dangling on a leash attached to his belt. Hejammedanoldtanneddeerskininsteadofaclothintohispants.Hegrabbedthebrushandbegantoscrubtherustandbirddroppingsfromthemetalball.Thespire,ontowhichtheballwasattached,wasconstantlyslight-lyswingingunderitsmovement.Whilehewasrubbinghewasthinkingabouttheball,abouthimselfandaboutthewizards’tower.Aboutthecursedanddamnedtow-er.Soitwasrumored!Thisfurtherincreasedhisfear.“Do not look down,” hesaidtohimselfandsoonthewordswere echoing in hishead and in the rhythmofhishands.Heforgotthathewashangingoverthecastlerooftops,andthathewouldsurelyburstintothousandspiecesifhefellonapawedstonepathway,faraway...there somewhere ... on the bottom.He almost faintedduetohishunger.Thereforehestoppedforawhile,putdownthebrushandtiedhimselfwith therope,whichdangledfromthemiddleofthecentralpillar.He encouraged himself and looked down. Peoplewere like antsand treeswere like shrubs.He thought

howfunnyitisthateverythingbecomessosmall.Thatputhiminagoodmoodandhesuppressedthegrowl-ing in his stomach.Hebegan rubbing the spherewitheven bigger force. He was rubbing the sphere almostangrilyand inhismindhedeniedthattherewouldbeanythingmagical in itoron the tiporon thewizards’tower.Wizardornot,tohimthiswasnotimportant.Atthe end he was rubbing the sphere mechanically. Hewas angered by the rivets, since the iron wire brushwas sticking to their edges. They were necessary be-cause they were holding together the curved panelsfromwhich theballwasmade.Frombelow the towerthesphereseemedsmooth.Butfromupcloseitlookedlikearidiculouspilewithrustyedgesandwithcount-lessrivets.Aftersomerubbing,theball’spanelsstartedgleaming likeabrassandthespheresuddenlymoved.Hestoppedandleanedforwardtobetterseewhatwashappening.“Look, look, Jacky! The sphere can be opened! …What is in it?”hemuttered inhischin.Onepanelwaslying on the second panel below and the edge lookedlikeasmallrail.Hetriedtoputa ingerintotheopeningso he could push theplates apart. Hegrabbed thebrush.He rubbed frantically, tryingtofreethepanel fromtherust.Finallyhescrubbedallof theremainingrustandthepanelslidto thesidebyitself.Thespherewashollow.However,hecouldn’tseetheinteriorwell,ashesatsidewaystotheopening.Heput his hand into the darknesswith caution and fear.He trembled and worried that something might grabhis fore inger.Hewason thewizards’ towerandwhoknowswhat could be hidden in this ... hollow sphere.Maybe...somethingvicious.Hecouldn’timaginewhatitcould be. But that “nothingness” was scary. His handwas trembling, but nevertheless he pushed it deeperand deeper into the dark interior. He felt a shelf onwhichakindofsquareobjecthadbeenlaid.Itseemedthat itwaswrapped in a rough cloth.He tried to indtheedgesandcornersoftheobjectwithhis ingers.Hetried to lift it, but itwas pretty dif icult.With an out-stretchedhandhedidn’thaveenoughstrengthtopickitup.Maybe it was ... a box or ... a book. Huh, he didn’tknowmuch about books.He saw thembefore, but hehas never read them, since he couldn’t read. Whowouldteachaserfs’ sonhowtoread?Even theyoungmister in the castle did not know how to read. Howwouldthanhereachthatknowledge?Thoseblackantson thepagesof thebook incitedhis interest, butwhocould teach him anything about reading. Plowing andsowing, yes, maybe. Or chopping the trees, diggingditchesalongtheroadandalike.Butreading...hey?!Nowhewasoldandbigenoughtoclimbthewizards’castletowerandscraptherustandbirddroppingswiththebrush.Sincehewasslimandhandy,hewasusefulforsuchlife-threateningtask.Carefully he looked down if anyone was watching.But people below didn’t care what he was doing uphere.Ifheonlyrubbedthemetalballwellandgaveitashiny gloss theywould be satis ied.He thought aboutpullingtheobjectfromtheinsideofthesphere.Buthechanged hismind. This must be done in the evening,whenthenightfalls,sonoonewillsee.He sighted. It became clear to him that he will behungry and rubbing this ball until evening. He mustinish thework;otherwisesomeoneelsewillclimbuphereanddiscoverthatsphereishollow.Bookorwhat-ever it is intheboxmustbesomethingspecial.Other-wise,noonewouldhideitsohighinthehollowsphereatthetipofthecastletower.Wizards’tower,hey!“If this isn’t ... a magic book, my name is not Jacky!” hethought.Itgavehimthecreepstoconsiderthatidea.Afterthathewasrubbingtheballandthespirewithatremendouszealuntiltheevening.Upon inishing, the ball was spotlessly clean. Hepulled the old reindeer leather cloth from behind hisbelt and he polished the sphere to a high-gloss, so itshined like gold. His mouth was dry, but some salivawasstillthere,sohecouldoccasionallyspitonthemet-al and continue rubbing the surface with even morevigour. When the sun went down, the ball caught its

lastraysanddispersedthemoverthecastlecourtyard.People down there, those funny and tiny ants,stoppedinthemiddleof theirworkandwith loudap-provaladmiredtheshinysphere.Jackylaughedtohim-selfwith satisfaction. Then he suddenly realized he isvery, very hungry. But hewaited until the sun disap-pearedbehindthedistanthillsandlightonaballwentout.He stretched and with a great dif iculty pulled theobjectoutofitshideout.Heclosedthepanel.Heuntiedthe rope, which was protecting him from falling. Thebook,nowhewasalmostcertainthattheobjectreallywasabook,waswrappedinaprotectingroughcanvas.Hefastenedeverythingtohisbodyandpulledhistornshirtoverit.Throughthecanvashefeltsomeunknownfeeling,as thousands tinyneedleswouldpenetratehisbody.Thensomestrangeheatspreadoverhisbodyandit was a nice sensation, since the dusky air becamecolder.Like a squirrel he slipped down the scaffold andreached theground.Whenhe touched the courtyard’sloor the dense dusk already lied between the castlewalls.Helookedupandthelastrayofsunlightbouncedoffthesphereandontothegroundinfrontofhisfeet.Thesmallroundsunnyspotshiveredonthepavement,slowlyslidtothecastlewallandthendisappearedinacrack between the stones. The crack was just bigenough forhis indingandheslid thebook into it.Hedidn’tthink,hejustdidit.Heranintothekitchen,whereworkerswerealreadyfeastingonadinner.Masterwavedathimandsatatthetablenexttohim.“Youdidwell, Jacky.Verywell.Lordsaresatis ied!”saidthemasterandshovedalittlebowlwithcoldbrothin front of Jacky and another one with half gnawedbones.Jackylookedatthemastersadly.Helaughedandpulledatinycoppercoinoutofhispocket.”Eat!You'remustbestarving!Andsee, I’ll giveyouthisonetoo,ifyouscrubthespheresontheotherthreecastletowers.” *****

Water under Silentwood was gurgling and thrum-mingalittleallthetime.Watersnake-onsanddragon-linswereconstantlyshootingbackandforthjustbelowthewater surface. Therewas always enough food un-der the human dwellings. They were prepared to doanything for food; they even allowedhumans to tamethem.Theywerenot toohappywhen the irstpeoplesettledhere inShallowater.Those impatientonesalsooccasionallyatesomerecklesshuman.Although,appar-ently people are not too tasty. But eventually theyfoundawaytocoexistwiththenewcomers.“Ey, if they only knew,” thoughtwizardZeomay.Hechuckled.“A little magic and there is peace in the house!” Hesteppedonaterrace,formedfromthelowerseed-head of the big-swamp-pumpkin. The whole growth-buildingwasswinging likeabigpendulumintheafter-noonbreeze andwas slightlywhimpering.Onhis backthewizardwascarryingablackbag,whichappearedtobealive.Fromtimetotimesomethingmovedinsideofit.Abovetheterraceawoodenstemofagreatpuddle-bushelwasclimbing. Itsopenwhiteblossomssmelledsweet and intoxicating. Hundreds of tiny dust-feederswere lyingaroundtheblossomsanditseemedlikethewhole puddle-bushel hummed in a rhythm, whichlulledthesenses.Itwasrockinginthewindanditsfatlakeswerestickingtoeachother.Whentheywerere-leasedaclappingsoundwasheard.Zeomay leanedover the fence and sent amind-slipintothewaters.“Bluish, my dragon-lin, come here!” wizardsaid-in-mind.Hewaitedamomentortwoandthenhesensedtheanimallongbeforeheactuallysawitwithhiseyes.Bluishreturnedthethinking-pattern:“I am coming! Do you have anything tasty for me? I'm

so hungry!” “A whole bag of see-ones is waiting for you!” “Hey, those are my favorite. I like you Zeomay!” Thewizardnoddedwithasmileonhisface.Heknewitwasreallytrue.Water looked like itwas boiling and it seemed likemanybluesnake-shapedbodieswouldintertwinewitheach other. It resembled a pile of cooked spaghetti,thick as a human body. Bluish was dragon-lin in hismiddlelifespan.Wellshapedandlongerthanonehun-dredhumanheights.Itslightbluescalyskinglitteredintheeveningsun.Outof thisbluepilea longspaghetti-like neck which was thinning towards the head wasraising. Itsmaneconsistedofuprightsemi-translucentscales. A small head had terriblemouth, full of sharpteeth. He was so big that in comparison the humanhead looked likeanappleand it reallywasn’tdif icultto imaginehow the irstmagicians inShallowater losttheirlives.BluishallowedZeomaytosmackhimtwicebetweenhiseyes.Thenhegentlyputhissnoutonthemagician’sshoulder.“Where are those see-ones? Are they in that bag on

your shoulder?” said-in-mindBluish.

“You want one?” thoughtthemagician.“Not only one! A hundred! You do not know how good

they are!” “Alright! Open your mouth!” BluishopenedhismouthwideandZeomay,resignedin his faith, ignored the toxic stench coming from thedragon-lin’s throat. He placed the bag on the groundand tookout the irst see-one.Fish-linwasstill resist-ingweakly,butsinceithadbeenoutsideofwaterforalong time, it could no longer breathewith full gills. Itendedinthedragon-lin’ssnout.Thedragon-linsankhisteeth into the see-one and with short head gusts hemovedthe ish-linclosertothethroat.“Oh, how good it is!” Bluishsaid-in-mind,whenhepushedthesee-onedownthethroat.Thelowerpartofhis bodywasmoving around in circles and the necksscaleswereshaking.“Do you have more?” “Certainly! Here's next!” Bluish trembled with pleasure and eagerly swal-lowedthesee-ones.“Now, there are no more!” said-in-mindZeomayatthe end and opened the bag wide. Bluish pushed hissnoutinitandsniffedtheinterior.“Uh, yeah, yeah. It is true. But ... I could eat more of

them, but it must be enough for today. I cannot stop eat-ing them. You do not know how good they are!” thoughtthe dragon-lin very fast. So fast, that Zeomay barelyfollowed. He still had that smile on his face whichformedhundredsofwrinklesaroundtheeyes.Zeomaysmackedtheanimaltwicebetweenhiseyesagain. Dragon-lin sank his head in the shallow waterandslidbetweentherootsofthebig-swamp-pumpkin.Hisswimming looked likeasatisfactiondance,hewassliding left and right between the roots, which weresupporting the growth-building – the dwelling ofZeomay.

“Do not forget to bring me a new bag full of see-ones tomorrow,” Bluishsaid-in-thought.

“Maybe I won’t bring the see-ones. Perhaps I will catch another ish-lin.” “Well, yes! It does not matter. But among the ish-lins the see-ones are the best. For me they are always the best.”

“I know! I know!” answeredZeomayinhismind.Heturnedandwantedtoenter thegrowth-buildingof the big-swamp-pumpkinwhen it suddenly hit him.Hecollapsedtotheground.Itseemedasifhewouldbepunched in the facebysomegianthand.Heshookhishead to clear hismind. Slowly the world around himcalmeddown.“The Book! Someone had found the Book, the unique one!” hefeltratherthanthoughtaboutit.Heopenedhislong-seeing-eyeandnowhecouldseethewizards’tow-er,thescaffoldingarounditandatinnythrallboywhopressedtheBooktohisbodyandhiditinhistornshirt.Thatdirtyshirtveiledhislong-seeing-look.HetriedtoestablishaconnectionwiththeBook.But

an old lax canvas, from which the boy’s shirt wasmade,obscuredhislook.Thisalonewasodd!TheBookwasalsowrapped in some layersof rude linen,whichwas enchanted with a tremendous power. The thirdobstaclewasalock.Hecouldn’tunclenchit,despitehiseffort.Hefelttheboy’sbodyheatandthathewascarryingthemagic Book somewhere… in depths… orwhere?Foramomenthesawapavedcastleyardandtheneve-rythingsankintothecolddarkness.TherewasnomorehumancontactwiththeBook.“Thrall boy?” he thoughtwhenhis long-seeing-eyeclosed.“Old Whitebeardy was the owner of this Book …

a long time ago! … Interesting! … He never told where the Book was … He rather allowed it to be taken away by White-all-seeing-woman to a swamp and to Van, to the Other side of Eternity … Ordinary boy? From village? How?” HewasupsetbythethoughtthattheBookhascer-tainlybeenseenbyallwhohaveeverbeenordainedinthegardenofSupremeAccordance,whethertheywerewhite seer-mags or black-scholars. He himself was averypro icientseer-mag,maybethebestinSilentwoodoreveninthewholeworld.But...surelysomeoneelsehadseenthat.Butwho?Slowly he picked himself up from the ground. Hemurmuredinhisbeard:“TheBookshasn’t been seen forat least ahundredyears.It'salwaysthesame!Onehundredyearsisape-riod,wheneverymagicisrevealed,anysorceryisbro-ken.”With sliding steps he came to the fence and gazedinto Shallowater. He musingly looked at a garlic-treeforest in the distance.He pulled a necklace out of hisshirtandweighedanamulethangingonit.Heopenedalidoftheamuletandlookedata ineredberylcrystal,which blinked at him slightly. It was his connectionwith theBook, theoneandonly.However, therewereothers who were also connected to the Book. Theywerewearing thesamenecklaceashedid.Heneededtocallthemtothemeetingnow.His inner peace was destroyed. He pushed himselfaway from the fence and hastily walked through theterracesdoor. *****Jacky lookedbackonceagain if anyonewas follow-ing him. Houses in the village were quiet and calm.White-wing owl hooting in the forest, which just in-creasedhisanxiety.AsmallhutwhereoldMorningmantheEremitelivedwasdarkandsilent.Jacky ixed the bag on his shoulder and stepped tothe door. He wanted to knock on the door but theygapedandswungononehinge.Theyweretiedwitharope,whichpreventedthemfromfallingtothe loor.“Good evening, dear mister Morningman …,” Jackypolitely greetedwhenhe stepped into thehut. But hewas interruptedbyacoughinggigglecomingfromtheoldmaninthecorner.

“Dear ...hee-hee-hee ...whatkrghkr ...,” thecrookedigure began saying, but was than chocked by a long,weak cough. When it ceased, the old man said whileclearinghisthroat:“Yeah, yeah! So it is with me. White-all-seeing-woman is already lirtingwithme.A littlemore and Iwilldie.Finally.”“Iwould...”“Myboy,whatbringsyouhere?”Jackyfailedtoreply,becausetheoldmancontinued:“AreyounotJacky,the irstsonofthedeceasedSys-ibin?Whowasasmartcarpenter?Surely,youmustbe,becauseyoulooklikehim.”Jackywasamazedhowtheoldmancouldseeinthatdarkness. Especially because it was evening and theonly lightwascoming through thedoorand thereforeJackywas nothing but a shadow in the doorway. Thevillagersalsoclaimedthattheeremiteissemi-blindandstupid on top of it. But therewere otherswho sworethathecanreadandwrite,infact,hewasonceabletodoboth.“Iwanttoknowsomething...aboutthewizardcalledWhitebeardy...”saidJackcarefully.“OUT!Get out, you troublemaker!” oldmanhowledin the next moment and got up half way. His voicesliced through the air. To Jacky it felt like a real stickwould hit him over the shoulder. The oldman raisedhishandandmenacedhim.“I also brought something to eat!” said Jacky shylyandstartedretreatingwithhisbackturnedtowardstheexit.Whenhereachedthedoor,heturnedaroundandleft.Theoldmancalledoutafterhim:“Whatdoyousay?To...eat...Wait,wait,comeback!”Jackyonceagainstoodinthedoorway.Theoldmanloweredhisvoice:“Well,well!SometimesIhearsomethingwrongly...“Wizard eagerly watched the boy’s bag and quietlyasked:"Whathaveyoubrought?Somethinggood?"Jack opened the bag and placed a piece of bread,smokedmeat,apieceofcheeseandasmall laskofredwineontheold,worm-eatentable.Hetookallofthatinsecret from the castle kitchen yesterday afternoon,whenhe inishedpolishingall theballsonthetowers.Before he came here, he ate some too. He openedthecoverandlookedatthe lashingredberylcrystal.Itseemedtohimthatthereddotwasincreasinglygrow-inguntilit illedhisvision.Now the day, everyone was waiting for, inally ar-rived. Whitebeardy’s mirda (=wizards soul) returnedafter hundred years. Morningmanwas satis ied abouthis accuratepredictionwhere itwill appear again.Heclaimed that itwill appearat the sameplacewhere itvanished into Van.
