Explanatory Notes

The Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on production of major non-food and industrial crops namely, abaca, coconut, coffee, rubber, sugarcane and tobacco. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture which is released quarterly by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).

This 2nd quarter 2012 issue of the Bulletin provides final estimates of production in January-March 2012 and preliminary estimates in April-June 2012. Also featured are the January-June 2012 preliminary estimates on area planted and number of bearing trees for permanent crops, and area harvested for temporary crops. The data on area and bearing trees are collected on a semi-annual basis

Area, production and number of bearing trees data are based on the results of the Quarterly Crop Production Survey (CrPS) of the BAS, Quarterly Coconut Production Survey (QCPS) of the Philippine Coconut Authority and BAS. Data on canes milled are sourced from the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

Abaca

o Abaca production in the 2nd quarter of 2012 at 20.25 thousand mt output went up by 3.44 percent from 19.57 thousand mt in 2011.

Improved weather in Bicol Region which increased production in the region by 5.54% to 7.33 thousand mt from 6.95 thousand mt in 2011.

Production in Aklan increased by 149.75% or 345.92 mt due to the expansion of area planted and planting materials provided by the FIDA thru the LGU.

High demand for abaca fibers in Manila induced harvesting in Iloilo and Negros Oriental.

o Bicol Region recorded the highest production at 7.33 thousand mt or

36.21 percent of the total abaca fiber output of the country. This was

followed by Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) with 5.89 thousand mt or 29.10

percent share and Region Xl (Davao Region) with 2.34 thousand mt or

11.57 percent share (Figure 1).

o Eastern Visayas continued to be infested with mosaic disease and bunchy tops which caused a 0.52 percent or 30.84 mt drop in production.

Coconut o Coconut production in the 2nd quarter of 2012 at 3.70 million mt

increased by 5.31 percent from the level of 3.52 million mt in 2011

(Table 1).

o The top coconut producers were Region Xl (Davao Region), Region lX (Zamboanga Peninsula), Region X (Northern Mindanao), Region Vlll (Eastern Visayas), and ARMM (Figure 2).

o Around 97.94 percent of the total coconut production were harvested as

mature nuts while 2.06 percent were young nuts.

o Production estimates of mature and young nuts were 5.23 percent and

9.02 percent higher than their respective levels in April-June 2011.

Zamboanga Peninsula posted the highest increase in production at

13.73 percent or 54.70 thousand mt. This was attributed to the

following:

1) Recovery from stress of coconut crops in Zamboanga del Norte,

and

2) Effect of the fertilization program of PCA in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Northern Mindanao also reported gains in Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental due to improved yield as a result of PCA’s fertilization program.

Additional bearing trees were noted in Misamis Occidental and Camiguin

Sufficient rains improved production in .Bukidnon, Sarangani and Davao Oriental.

Most provinces in the country have recovered from the long dry spell in 2010.

High demand for buko juice increased harvest of young nuts.

Coffee o Production of coffee in the second quarter of 2012 at 10.10 thousand mt

dropped by 7.56 percent from 10.93 thousand mt in 2011. o Only Liberica variety posted a positive growth at 6.29 percent due to the

effects of rejuvenation process in Batangas and adequate rainfall during fruit development in Cavite.

o Frequent rains and strong winds during the flowering stage caused lower production of Arabica in Quezon by 3.93%, South Cotabato by 6.79% and Sultan Kudarat by 0.35%. Shifting from Arabica Coffee to banana also resulted from lower production in Compostela Valley by 29.53% and in Davao City by 16.77%.

o Early harvest of Excelsa was reported in Cavite. Around 565 mt of the production in the 1st semester were harvested in the 1st quarter which brought down the 2nd quarter production by 48.60 percent.

o Shifting to other crops such as senorita banana in Maragusan, Compostela Valley and banana lakatan and cavendish in Davao City reduced production of Robusta by 5.85 percent or 80.59 mt in Davao Region.

o Less production was reported in Caraga mainly due to the on-going rejuvenation process in coffee farms in Surigao del Sur.

o Among the coffee producing regions in the country, SOCCSKSARGEN was the leading producer with 45.24 percent share in total production. Davao Region and ARMM followed with respective shares of 18.76 percent and 13.77 percent (Figure 3).

Rubber

o Rubber cuplump production from April to June 2012 at 117.53 thousand mt increased by 6.12 percent from 110.75 thousand mt in 2011. The output gain was traced to the following:

Increased number of tappable trees

The 9.40 percent increase in production in North Cotabato

Increased output of Basilan which grew by 15 percent

o Rubber continued to be mainly produced in Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN and ARMM with shares in national production at 36.75 percent, 30.98 percent and 20.05 percent, respectively. Production of these regions accounted for 88.78 percent of the national output (Figure 4).

Sugarcane o Total production of sugarcane was 3.96 million mt. It went down by 42.55

percent from the 2011 report of 6.90 million mt. The factors that contributed to the decrease were the following:

Less fertilizer usage in Batangas and North Cotabato.

Smaller canes harvested from ratooned sugarcane crops from Iloilo during the second half of 2011.

Movement of harvest as a result of the intensified harvesting/milling in the 4th quarter of 2011 in Cebu and Negros Occidental.

Early completion of harvesting and milling in Bukidnon, May 20, 2012 and in Davao del Sur, April 30, 2012.

Shifting to oil palm production in Maguindanao.

o Western Visayas was the top producer of sugarcane. Its contribution to the national production was 46.44 percent (Figure 5).

o Production of cane for centrifugal sugar which accounted for 98.76 percent of the total sugarcane production dropped by 42.86 percent (Figure 6).

o Production of sugarcane for chewing dropped by 15.77 percent.

o Sugarcane for panocha/ muscovado and basi/ vinegar went up by .72 percent and 6.84 percent, respectively.

Tobacco

o In the second quarter of 2012, production of tobacco was 35.27 thousand mt. It went up by 4.54 percent from the production of 33.74 thousand mt in 2011 (Table 1).

o Virginia tobacco production increased by 8.31 percent or from 10.94

thousand mt in 2011 to 11.85 thousand mt in 2012. This was attributed to the following:

Increase in area planted, shifting from mongo and garlic in Ilocos Norte.

Financial assistance was extended to tobacco farmers in Ilocos Sur by Union Leaf Tobacco Corporation (ULTC)

High price of Virginia tobacco

o Production of other varieties, mostly Burley tobacco, went up by 16.02 percent. From 11.83 thousand mt in 2011, production increased to 13.72 thousand mt. The increase was triggered by the following:

Area planted/harvested increased in Pangasinan and Ilocos Norte due to high price.

Financial assistance was extended to tobacco farmers in La Union by Universal Leaf Philippines Inc and in Isabela by Isabela Leaf.

o Harvest of Native tobacco declined by 11.61 percent because of:

Shifting to Burley in Isabela.

Native tobacco crops in Cagayan were affected by floods.
