Too nice to spend hours on the computer so it has taken me awhile to catch up with all the information that has come in. The number of certificates available for download has been great and Lawrence Otis has kept me busy with disks of information for cataloguing. The Certificate section in this issue is fairly extensive with a great collection of new ones from Arkansas and Michigan. Each provides details that have to be catalogued and I try to determine which family each connects to as I catalogue them so it is a slow process. Most certificates I am able to place and from time to time one provides information that connects families that, until that point, have been unknown. There has been some interesting information sent in over the past few months. The Farley, Wiltshire census information (R2857 & R2858) from Quintin White and Muriel Allen has helped us sort out another Pitton, Wiltshire family and is the subject of the an article in this issue. The information from Pat Kelly on the Whitlocks of Victoria, BC and Oregon (R2860) was sent in some months ago and I only just got to work on it recently - again this is the subject of an article in this issue. The sketch of her life by Honor (Marks) Whitlock (R2860) including the details of her voyage from London to Victoria via Cape Horn in 1848 was a great find by Pat Kelly. I have not been able to place the Baptist Minister, John Whitlock of Virginia 1785 that William Simpson sent in (X6713 & R2855). The scanning project continues with only X2200 to X6200 left to complete. Everything up to 1996 is now scanned into the computer. From 1998 on most of the email items are already in the computer so the scanning job will proceed quicker once I get the next couple of years done. I still visit the Cloverdale Library at least once a month to download census information and verify what we have in our files is accurate. I recently completed the 1870 census for Tennessee as well as the 1810 for Virginia. In both cases there were items on those two census’ that I was curious about so completed the whole section for each. I have downloaded the 2009 updates to Dick Whitlock in South Africa but have not heard from him yet when he will be able to update the website. Hopefully soon as the last update was June 2008. Our trip to Omaha was very interesting and did manage to find some Whitlock gravesites to add our photograph collection. Visited with Patrick’s niece who is a doctor in Omaha and then went onto Springfield, Missouri to visit with an old family friend of Patrick’s mother. Saw quite a bit of Nebraska, some Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma - was a very good trip. We are off to California in October for two weeks, driving this time, Redding, Auburn, Fresno, Los Angeles etc. A whole gang of us are meeting at Disneyland to celebrate several birthdays that occur in October. Hope your Summer was a good one and as we get back into the routine for the Fall I hope your family research progresses and you manage to shake loose that elusive ancestor from the leafy branches of your tree.

We have had a wonderful summer on the West Coast and the past couple of months have beenpretty hectic, including organizing and putting on a Trehearne family reunion. Too nice to spendhours on the computer so it has taken me awhile to catch up with all the information that has comein. The number of certificates available for download has been great and Lawrence Otis has kept mebusy with disks of information for cataloguing. The Certificate section in this issue is fairlyextensive with a great collection of new ones from Arkansas and Michigan. Each provides detailsthat have to be catalogued and I try to determine which family each connects to as I catalogue themso it is a slow process. Most certificates I am able to place and from time to time one providesinformation that connects families that, until that point, have been unknown.

There has been some interesting information sent in over the past few months. The Farley,Wiltshire census information (R2857 & R2858) from Quintin White and Muriel Allen has helped ussort out another Pitton, Wiltshire family and is the subject of the an article in this issue. I thought itmight be interesting to show you the process of how we resolved a problem.

The information from Pat Kelly on the Whitlocks of Victoria, BC and Oregon (R2860) was sent insome months ago and I only just got to work on it recently - again this is the subject of an article inthis issue. Pat also send the Archive forms to order better copies of the photographs of this familythat are held by the archives in Victoria. The sketch of her life by Honor (Marks) Whitlock (R2860)including the details of her voyage from London to Victoria via Cape Horn in 1848 was a great findby Pat Kelly.

I have not been able to place the Baptist Minister, John Whitlock of Virginia 1785 that WilliamSimpson sent in (X6713 & R2855). Hopefully more information will be uncovered to enable us todetermine how he fits into the family.

I have downloaded the 2009 updates to Dick Whitlock in South Africa but have not heard from himyet when he will be able to update the website. Hopefully soon as the last update was June 2008.

Our trip to Omaha was very interesting and did manage to find some Whitlock gravesites to add ourphotograph collection. GEORGE WHITLOCK of FARLEY, WILTS b.1833In the collection of Michigan birth and marriage certificates send in by Lawrence Otis there were tworelating to Edith I. Whitlock. CERT1808 records the marriage of Edith I. Whitlock and Fred Blair at GrandRapids, Michigan Nov.28,1894. Edith is shown born in Manister, Michigan, the daughter of JohnWhitlock(sic) and Mary Parsons. CERT1856 confirms Edith was born in Manister, Michigan April 26,1868the daughter of George Whitlock and Mary Parsons, her parents were born in England.

In addition there is CERT1816 that records the marriage of Anna C. (Whitlock) Reed and G. LockwoodDickinson married Feb.17,1909 also Grand Rapids, Michigan. Anna C Whitlock was likely Edith’s oldersister and she is shown born in England, also the daughter of George Whitlock and Mary Parsons. Thisconfirms the John Whitlock shown on Edith’s marriage record should have read George Whitlock.

Consulting the Michigan census file, I found this family on the 1880 census for Grand Rapids. All thefamily except Edith are shown born in England. Edith had five older siblings Joshua, Mary E., Annie C.,William Parsons and Sarah. This also confirmed the above Anna C. was definitely Edith’s sister.

Looking for a Whitlock/Parsons marriages in the Whitlock Marriage Register, I found a George Whitlockmarried to a Mary Parsons December 26,1853 at Farley, Wiltshire. This took me to the Wiltshire censusfile. On the 1851 census there was a George Whitlock age 18 apprentice living with Joshua Parsons and hiswife Mary. George is shown as a son in law, born in Hornhill, Dorset. This seems to imply George’smother may have been Mary who married secondly to Joshua Parsons.

I was unable to find a George Whitlock born about 1833 with a mother Mary.

At this point I needed some help and I sent a query off to our two Pitton experts, Muriel Allen and QuintinWhite to see if they might have anything that could assist with this mystery.

Muriel came back with information that Joshua Parsons was born about 1806 the son of Silas Parsons.Joshua Parsons and Mary Whitlock were married in 1846. Muriel also provided the 1861 censusinformation that showed George was a cordwinder (shoemaker) - it is assumed this was what he wasapprenticing for in 1851. Muriel also pointed out that the 1881 census shows Mary Parsons age 72 a widowand dairywoman. Living with her is her son James Parsons age 31.

Quintin provided additional marriage details for George’s marriage to Mary Parsons December 26, 1853,Farley, Wilts. George was 21 a bachelor and shoemaker - father UNKNOWN. Mary was 23, single thedaughter of William Parsons. Quintin speculates that George may have been the George Whitlock age 17 in1851 Ag Lab, Lodger living with Stephen Whitlock. I rejected this as we know George was a shoemaker by1853 when he married and it makes more sense he would be the one shown as an Apprentice in 1851.

Quintin makes the point the George was likely illegitimate due to the “father unknown” shown on hismarriage record. But who was his mother? The 1851 census implies this was Mary but Quintin provides anoriginal copy of the 1841 census when George would be 7 or 8. Mary is shown age 30 an Ag Lab born inthe county, living with Silas Parsons age 75 and his son Joshua Parsons age 35. There is no son George age7 or 8 living with them. Mary later marries this Joshua Parsons.

Quintin points out there is a George Whitlock age 7 on the 1841 census living with John Head & Elizabeth(Whitlock) Whitlock. He is recorded after the youngest daughter, age 2 and his surname Whitlock is shown(which it is not for all the other children). While John Head Whitlock did not have a sister Mary Whitlock, his wife Elizabeth Whitlock did. Mary Whitlock bpApr.6,1806 Salisbury, Wilts. Elizabeth says she wasborn in Milford on most census records. These two were the children of William Whitlock and his secondwife Ann Offer whom William married July 5,1802 St.Martin, Salisbury. While the birth year is not a directmatch for Mary, that is not unusual. I am more concerned that Mary lists her place of birth as Pitton as wellas born 1809 consistently in every census.

In her next email Muriel provides what is likely a clincher that Mary is George’s mother. The 1871 censusshows Mary Parsons age 62 with her grandson, Joshua Whitlock age 16 living with her. We know thisJoshua is the son of George Whitlock and Mary Parsons.

Finally Quintin provides a date of death for Mary (Whitlock) Parsons. She died Nov.17,1884 age 76. As away of confirming the circular connection of many of these Pitton families, Quintin notes that Mary’s sonJames married Philida Whitlock, the great aunt of the late country writer, Ralph Whitlock. James andPhilida Parsons came to Canada and settled in Calgary.

Taking all this great information and trying to sift out what is important is not easy. I think I am fairly sureGeorge was the illegitimate son of Mary Whitlock and that Mary was not married before. The 1846marriage record would likely confirm this. Why George’s birth place is given as Dorset I am not sure.Quintin speculates that Mary may be been working at Hornhill Hall, near Stalbridge, Dorset as a servant andshe gave birth to George there. This does make sense. She then returned to Pitton and her extended family. It would also make sense that young George might have been living with one of his aunts and this wouldexplain him showing on the 1841 census with John & Elizabeth (Whitlock) Whitlock.

I therefore favour the theory that Mary was the daughter of William Whitlock and Ann Offer and was asister to Elizabeth Whitlock, the wife of John Whitlock. If the 1846 marriage certificate shows Mary wassingle and the daughter of William Whitlock that would confirm this theory.

MARK PETER WHITLOCK (1917-2009)I was very sad to receive news from Peter’s son John Whitlock that his father had died May 1,2009. Fromour first contact in August 1969, Peter was sharing research and offering to assist our efforts in any way hecould. Over the next 40 years we corresponded many times and Peter was tireless in his efforts to expandnot only our knowledge of his Oxfordshire line of the family but our history of the Whitlock name ingeneral.

From that first correspondence I learned Peter descended from Mark & Ann Frances Warin (Bull) Whitlockmarried in 1863 at St.Paul’s Covent Garden, London. Peter quickly made the connection back toDucklington in Oxfordshire and over the years he was able to determine his descent from Elisha & Anne(Carter) Whitlock who were married in 1696 in Witney, Oxfordshire.

When I lived in Ware, Hertfordshire in 1970/71, I met and talked with Peter several times. Peter was alawyer in London and I was invited to visit several times when persons of interest were there. I remembermeeting the American, Richard Whitlock Davis at one of Peter’s dinners and discussing Richard’s Virginianorigins and speculating on his connections back to England. Always interesting events and remember fondlyMolly Whitlock’s Jerusalem artichoke soup made from roots she had grown at their farm in Yeovil,Somerset. I also remember having to leave before dinner was finished to catch the last train home to Ware.I was very embarrassed.

We lost contact for some time after I returned to Canada and then re-commenced our correspondence in1991 after I had done a couple of articles in the Newsletter about his sister, the author Pamela Whitlock. Ihad known of Pamela, who published her first novel at 16 in 1936, but had not realized she was Peter’s sisteruntil some years later.

Several other members of the family have gone on to publish books and Peter always kept me up to date withfamily events and achievements. Peter also passed on many stories about his part of the family. In oneletter he described his and Molly’s wedding day in Khartoum in the Sudan. The temperature was 115F!!

There are numerous “updates” from Peter shown in the files and it was always great to keep up with thelatest additions to Peter’s growing extended family. His son John has promised to continue this from time totime.

Peter was a long time subscriber to the Whitlock Family Newsletter and I will miss his comments andupdates. Thanks to John for letting us know of the passing of a long time friend and mentor.

In March 1999 I did an article in the Whitlock Family Newsletter Whitlocks of Victoria, B.C. 1849 detailingthe beginnings of Fort Victoria and the arrival in 1849 of the Whitlock family from London. The abovesketch by Honour (Marks) Whitlock gives a first hand account of this family’s emigration from England toOregon, via Victoria, BC

Honor’s husband, William Whitlock (1825-1883) was born in Kentishtown, London, the son of Thomas &Mary (Jones) Whitlock. The family is shown as “domestic servants” in the entry registering the birth oftheir son at Fort Victoria. It is assumed they worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company as some entries say“Shepherd H.B.C.” or “Labourer H.B.C.” Other places William is shown as “merchant”. William Whitlockhad trained as a copper plate maker before leaving England with his new bride. Honor had been married

HONOR (MARKS) WHITLOCKThe following letter is held by the British Columbia Archives and was sent in by Pat Kelly of Victoria.

Oregon City, Oregon, dec.11,1902

Dear Mr.Gasnbell,- I am sending you by this mail a copy of the last Pacific Monthly, containing a sketch ofJames Douglas that may interest you, not because it contains perhaps anything new to you, but as anexpression of the estimation in which he is held here.

A dear old lady who died recently told me a story of Douglas that perhaps belongs to the history of Victoria. As an old lady she was fair, as a girl she told me left England as a bride, blue eyed, rosy-cheeked and goldenhaired, on a sailing vessel for Victoria. The voyage was a long one. When at last they reached Fort Victoriano settlements were there, but temperarily they sojourned with Douglas at the fort. This was in 1849. Soonafter their arrival her child was born. My recollection is that the fort physician was absent, her husband wasyoung and inexperienced. For a long, long time she was sick, Douglas was called in, and at her bedside hewept at the suffering of the fair young English girl. All this was changed to joy when a beautiful boy wasborn and taking her hand Douglas said “ You are the mother of the first white child born in Victoria”. Shetold me how kind and helpful the Indian women were, they had never seen many if any white women, andhad never heard of such distress in child-birth. As there were no settlements in British Columbia theWhitlocks sailed down to the mouth of the Columbia, and settled soon after at Oregon City, then the mostconsiderable town in Oregon. I passed the old house yesterday, moss-covered and decaying where they livedso many years, upbuilders in all good work in the young settlement.

On their arrival it became noised abroad that the Whitlocks had clothing, many trunks of it. Now clothingwas in great demand at this time, and all their spare garments were solicited by the American emigrants andreadily sold at good prices. A young missionary from Vermont had located here, Mr. Atkinson, and to hischurch the Whitlocks attached themselves and for years were the main support. “How often have I run overthese hills” said Grandma Whitlock, “visiting the strangers who had arrived and looking after the sick.” Dr.Atkinson founded the Congregational church here, the first on the coast, and not second to his efforts werethose of Whitlock and his wife. Mr. Whitlock was a fine penman and as clerk in town and church was ingreat demand. To the day of her death Grandma Whitlock was a true missionary, sending religious papersand magazines all over the town, and sustaing to the last the religious work of this community. I haveforgotten how many years she taught in the Sunday School, something like 25 or 30 years, until she becameso old and lame she cd not go.

That son born, William T. Whitlock, is still living, at present I believe in Portland.

This is only one of many examples of the old ties of Victoria and Oregon City.

Yours truly,

Eva Emery Dye
