Moving?
Our project attempts to show bilateral migration and associated remittance flow to the home country for the year 2013.
This insight can lead us to understand the economic landscape of various developing countries.
Motivation
Visualization Approach
Data Extraction
Bilateral migration and remittance flow for year 2013 has been extracted from the World Bank Website
Data Preparation
JMP and Excel has been used to format the data
Visualization Approach
Visual Exploration
Interactive Chord chart representation in D3.js for migration flow and static representation of remittance using Tableau
Visual Refinement
Tooltip, colour schemes and different colour shades to fill the countries on the map to make visualization meaningful
Explore Visualization
In year 2013, Mexico had the highest migrating population followed by India but the graph shows that India was the highest recipient of the remittance ($55,562 million) in that year followed by China ($49,353 million), Philippines ($24,002 million) and Mexico ($22,873 million).
The United States was the highest recipient of the migrating population (29,968,121) followed by Saudi Arabia (7,643,213) and UAE (6,279,733).
43% of the total migrating population received by US was from Mexico followed by China 7.9% and India and Philippines approximately 6.5%.
Results
Given the time span we were able to look at the migration and remittance patterns for just one year.
Going forward we plan to look at data sets with 5 year or decade intervals to visualize and derive more in depth insights.
We plan to expand our visualization to accommodate more details and dynamic interactions.
