DESCRIPTION

A pag.

A pag.

Page 5: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

It’s here. Nearly. And like ever year it’s difficult to believe. Coats have been hung up for good and we feel unburdened. We free ourselves of the (true) weight of winter and feel immediately lighter. The air feels good, it carries a smell that makes us seek companionable chit chat, make new encounters and visit places never seen before. It’s springtime folks and with it arrives our third issue!Theme; smell. But what is a smell?Verderamemag asked itself and investigated. And so we unearth people with shops off the commercial maps, temples of experimentation, houses that don’t exist in reality only in the drawings of our layouts and laid tables that recall ancient fragrances. So what are the most important scents, the ones that awaken our most intimate emotions and make us feel happy? The smells that disgust and those we can’t get enough of?The visual replies have come directly from you, our readers who participated in the competition ran by Lomography Italia. On page 40 the winners of the competition give us their personal interpretation of smell. We have thoughts lost in the air, skin that recalls the taste of intimacy and flowers that attack us with a blaze of olfactory emotions. The, apparently simple and banal, union of scent and perfume is investigated in an unconventional manner; vases and flowers chase each other through the design pages. A selection of spring perfumes is presented on page 60. And finally we reflect with Angelo Orazio Pregoni, the nose of O’Driù, on the relationship between art and perfume and we also reflect with Meo Fusciuni. We leave you now with a thought given to us by Marcel Proust; smell brings with it the immense edifice of memory.

The house doesn’t exist but the furnishings do. In an imaginary layout which feels somewhat like a board game, the interiors that will be players of the 2012 spring season become pawns. Who will win?

The photos published in this section are the result of our collaboration with Lomography. In the month of February Verderamemag and Lomography launched a photographic competition aimed at interpreting the sense of smell.Smells can be many different things. The English Dictionary coldly describes smell as “the faculty or power of perceiving odours or scents by means of the organs in the nose”, but what is smell to you? What are the most important smells, those that awaken intimate emotions and that make you happy? Which smells disgust you and which can you just not get enough of?In the next pages the visual answers to our questions.

A Baroque table where reality and fantasy exist side by side in an elegance that reminds us of an artist’s tableau. Smells become perfumes and food transforms into contemporary make ups.

65

Page 66: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

66

Page 67: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

67

Page 68: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

68

Page 69: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

69

Page 70: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

70

Page 71: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

71

Page 72: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

What relationship falls between vision and smell? Is it possible to decipher art through perfume?Angelo Orazio Pregone, the nose of O’Driù, has created a true olfactory performance in the Ulisse Gallery in Rome; “Perfhumance”. Using the masters of contemporary art as his starting point; Ugo Attardi, Gianfranco Goberti, Sidival Fila and Giorgio Galli, he investigated and broke down the emotions that are born of their unique works (strictly handmade compositions). We had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing the eclectic perfume creator, who has shown once again his ability to penetrate a magical and dreamlike universe.

Where was the idea of uniting painting and olfactory art born?

The idea is born from Aristotle and his second book on poetics which has never been found. According to myth this second book explored the sense of smell pinpointing it as the primary sense to reach art through comedy and laughter. We presume that Aristotle based his thoughts on the possibility of influencing “liquid” states of mind (as defined in Hippocratic medicine) with another liquid which, through smell, would influence mood and disposition. After all even the term “humour” finds its roots in the Latin word umorem meaning Liquid. Therefore we presented Lumore, an original O’Driù fragrance. In a unique performance the audience was introduced to Lumore in a confessional, alone, with a bar of glass in hand impregnated with the “philosophical essence”. The path to other artistic languages was, at this point, a short one.

In your creations for this exhibition, where is the point of contact between the two art forms?

It depends on understanding whether pictorial contemporary art is limited to defining the questions of nature or those of reality. Often artistic works are defined as “conceptual”, this presupposes that

a sensorial intuition of the piece will not suffice for its true understanding. The eye, in fact, does not pick up on the more rarefied aspects of art. If sight is therefore the initial vehicle for our perception of a piece, smell can be the mediumfor the further appreciation of the same piece. Being unable to decode and understand smells, our olfactory sense touches the subconscious of human beings, and quickly reaches the emotions of the mind, overtaking matter, concrete reality and appearance. This added sensitivity in facing artistic works creates new layers of thought allowing us to pick up on the unnatural representations of the art work; those outside of us but unknowingly within us, the true “ultra-esthetics”.

Rousseau says that smell is the sense of memory and desire. Is it the same for you?

Smell is pure consistency. Even the absence of a smell is in itself a smell. Our true identity is tied not only to what we are, but to what we have been. As a glass of wine brings to the nose strong suggestions of grapes, the smells of fermentation, perfumes of things that are no longer present in the glass, in that same way smell captures the extreme essence of the human being; the essence of the past and the present. All emotions tied to smell are therefore eternal, and when they happen they are so spontaneous they take us aback; nostalgia, memories, déjà vu. Smell therefore satisfies the most obvious yet secret human desire, the desire for immortality.

Your olfactory creations have often been defined as “metaphysical”, much like the art of De Chirico. If you had to create a perfume for the painter how would it be?

I would try to override any instability, any fickleness, making the sensory perception unchangeable and safe. It would be a brackish scent dotted with aromas between sandalwood, benzoin

72

Page 73: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

and tobacco. It would have a defined olfactory trace of basil creating a slight touch of balsamic and the magical climes of myrrh. I imagine a sea wave in an enchanted living room that smellsof smoke, of furnishings and of human scents. Maybe, as the only note of “animal life” I would add a touch of horse hair, all tamed by the detailed luminosity of jasmine.

You define your creations as “obsessions”. What do you mean by this?

My perfumes redefine the contours of my thoughts, tracing and inscribing them. They are born from my primordial impulses. They are true condensations of details and insecurities. They can be scenes or meditations. They are true psychic representations with the aim of “emancipating” whoever wears them. I dress thoughts with scents, and when the robes fall off the thoughts declare themselves with a deafening, solemn nudity. My creations are shepherd, field and sheep all together, they are an obsession, like the evoking creationist word game; shepherd, field, sheep.

Can you reveal any of your future projects?

In the year of the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the Fluxus Festival established in 1962 by Maciunas, we are defining a performance in the nearby Canton Ticino (Switzerland). To tell the truth there will also be an installation which will trigger off the performance. It will be a year that will also see us protagonists on other scenes. We are filming a short to explain perfume without stereotypes. Even in this case we will create the short by following an extravagant and impertinent artistic path; opposing free creativity and my shamanic visions to an impeccable formality. We will keep you informed.

76

Page 77: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

Page 80: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

80

Page 81: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

Page 83: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

83

Page 84: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

I met Meo during Berlin Fashion Week last January. On that occasion he was presenting the perfume he had created for the designer Christine Mayer, with an olfactory performance I will never forget. Tens of people were descending on the limited space of the boutique and he, lit only by the soft light of the candles surrounding him, suggested emotions by evaporating and superimposing an unpredictable sequence of natural essences.

Were you able to create the same magical moment of Berlin last night at the Palazzo Reale?

There was a strange, intense atmosphere. Notturno is an entirely new perfume and therefore needed to be presented in a different way. The Sala delle Cariatidi (a room within the Palazzo Reale) was full but it’s walls were bare, I staged a minimal set placing six black blocks around me. To spread the essences I had to create something unique, for one night only, essences in unrepeatable formulas, singular perfumes in oil, as the health and safety of the palazzo forbid me from lighting any candles. The background music underlined my mood. I shared some pieces from my, no longer existing, music project, Nenia, the formation of industrial-noise I created in the nineties.

I read that in Notturno there are notes of rum and ink. After smelling it I had the distinct sensation of being face to face with an extremely complex piece of work, initially aggressive but then incredibly deep and alluring. Tell me how it was born, how long does it take to create something so unique and special?

There are many months of experiments behind Notturno, I let drops of essence fall within a metal box lined with a black silk handkerchief. I would close the box, give it time to mature and after one, two, three days I would check the result and its evolution. Notturno was thought about, created and elaborated only during the night time hours of these months.

Is this a common method of working for the professionals in your sector? I know that you have a peculiar background.

My path is decidedly atypical for a perfume creator, I am a chemist, I have a degree in herbalist techniques from the faculty of Pharmacology. For a time I was also an anthropologist in the Moroccan desert, I kept a journal of ethnobotanics and deepened my passion for the Arab world. Then came the interest for aromatherapy and, following a friend’s suggestion I explored the world of perfumes, basically I was self taught and catapulted into a dream. For me travel and life experiences come first, then comes the creation of perfume. First the poetical pyramid then the olfactory one. Unlike many I put poetry ahead of the molecules.

Who are the authors that inspired you the most?

I owe a lot to the poetry of Friederich Hölderlin, but also to Rilke, Celan, Neruda and De la Cruz. Poetry is what moves me and allows me to give a soul to my creations. When the poetry within me ends. I will go back to being an anthropologist!

Even the packaging gives the idea of something precious and very personal.

The case containing the bottle is in soft leather, ideal for safeguarding it during a journey. The lid is in pure silver, hand carved. Made all the more special by a pendant with a small stone; the black tourmaline which is said to keep away negative energy. It was created in collaboration with the goldsmith artist Raffaella Lamanna.

Where does the idea and ability to present your perfumes through an olfactory performance come from?

I love contemporary theatre, I have to thank the years of training with the Lenz Rifrazioni group.

84

Page 85: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

An experience which, other than teaching me to be on stage, has also helped me in my social relationships, in the relationship I have with my body, with my feelings, smells and images.

You came on the scene only a year and a half ago with a trilogy on travel. What is the secret of such a rapid and explosive success?

I think my clients appreciate that I give my whole self. The performance last night represented everything I am. At the same time I associate directly with the buyers, not through agents or intermediaries. And then there is the commercial strategy, my perfumes are not sold in just any perfume shop but in high end establishments and in clothes shops.

Would you like to tell me something more about your first creation?

The travel trilogy is composed of three different fragrances that correspond to three different moments and significant places in my life. The first is called Rites de Passage and harks back to the moment in which, in Istanbul, the idea of Meo Fuscini was born. The second is Shukran, which means thank you in Moroccan and evokes the tea that is drunk in Marrakech, with strong notes of mint and tobacco (top ten scents 2011 for olfactoralist.com). Finally Ciavuru d’amuri, or perfume of love, for my homeland; Siciliy. It’s a work of olfactory memories from my childhood. A trajectory straight into the heart of the nomad out to discover new olfactory cultures.

And for the future, any ideas?

My next project is called Luce! (Light!), in stark contrast to my current work, but before dedicating myself to this I will be taking Notturno on tour to 12 cities around the world. Milan is only the first stop of a long journey.

“We are the children of Linneo, we need to catalogue everything. And cataloguing everything leads to social disasters. In the orient it’s not like this. Either it is, or it isn’t. Either it’s liked or it’s not.Perfumes have no sex. In the Arab world the rose is worn by the prince and when Mohammed rose to the sky, a tear fell and became the perfume of roses” are the sage words of the creator of British Box as he shows us around his Milanese shop where perfumes are the undisputed stars.

Edera e Iris.

88

Page 89: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

89

Page 90: Issue 03 - Scents and Smells

Heather and Iris. To Giovanni I am this alchemy of perfumes. And probably I am not the only one he has transformed into an essence. In fact it’s over twenty years that Giovanni translates people, things, animals into fragrances. From when he opened his shop (defining it as such feels wrong seeing as it’s much more than a simple commercial venture) in a street, hidden from the traffic of Corso Buenos Aires in Milan.British Box is on Via Melzo and has been here for over twenty years, from when Giovanni Marchelle decided to change life, to embrace the project started in London by his sister and to dedicate himself entirely to the art of perfume. “I was bored of what I was doing in that period of my life and I adapted to this new adventure. In the beginning I took on the project as a commercial venture then, given the nature of the products I am dealing with (perfumes ndr), I realised that I had to study in order to sell, but most of all in order to give that extra something to my customers”. Not an unlikely choice given that British Box sells perfumes which are true “artistic projects” and “extensions of Giovanni’s personality” as he himself tells us. Here you can find the most prestigious names of perfumerie in a sought after selection where names such as Frapin, Grossmith, Robert Piguet and Nasomatto don the shelves as well as artisanal creations which evoke the “humility of doing”, a concept very dear to the father of British Box.Speaking to this man – who comes across as a gentleman of another era – makes you realise that perfumes are nothing other than “pleasant smells”, and makes you understand the importance of the sense of smell which is often pushed aside in our times: “smell is the only one of our senses in direct contact with our hypothalamus, the part of our brain that processes emotions, feelings, pleasures. In addition to this it’s an alerting system for human beings. One just has to think of how pregnant women emphasise their state through smell in order to protect themselves and the child they are carrying. In today’s world it’s an undervalued sense, others such as sight being

favoured above it. If today we had the same sense of smell that we had a thousand years ago there would probably be people jumping off the balcony.” And it’s within the boundaries of this description that Giovanni, throughout our chat, introduces me to scents of tuberose, fleur-de-lis, jasmine that joined with a certain strain of roses creates an aroma of manure, but not for this reason unpleasant, or a tuberose joined with fleur-de-lis creating a faecal scent reminiscent of ancestral times and which, surprisingly, is not disturbing. And more; a vaporised distillation of 2kg of rose petals with cardamom or a gardenia with citric notes that drive men crazy, to remind us that “perfume has no sex”. Bewitched by the tales and drunk on the fragrances I continue to listen and I learn that “perfumes give different results depending on the skin ph of the person wearing them, this is determined by diet, lifestyle, sport”, and that every essence is tied to memories and that when we taste them everyone meets their “ghost in a bottle”, which is nothing more than an olfactory déjà vu that reminds us of a grandmother, an uncle or a boyfriend because “perfumes leave olfactory footprints that create new methods of communication”. So therein lies the importance in not just selling the products but in seeking to gift the clients a work of art, something which will really make the difference and something which “in bad times and good will bring a positive energy”.
