Primary school is when the foundations for a successful life are established. With this in mind, North Shore Coaching College offers a rich variety of BOOSTER PROGRAMS to ensure our students receive a superior, well-rounded education. These programs support our Fastrain, Young Achiever and High Achiever programs that have resulted in thousands of students achieving academic success.

The Chess Club - Years 2 to 6 - students learn to play and develop skills in the game of kings. Chess is much more than a pastime. It teaches strategy, planning, patience and consequences. These skills are important for success in professional and personal life. Chess gives your child the ‘thinking’ edge!Classes are organised based on the level of the students’ skills and experiences. See your Campus - Director today for details. The course fee is refreshingly reasonable!

A love of literature is the first step on the path to reading success!

With this in mind we created our highly successful Reading Club - Years 3 & 4.

Students attend once a week to read and discuss set texts such as ‘Moby Dick’, ‘Oliver Twist’ and ‘Wind in the Willows’. Students receive two works of literature each term which they get to keep. What a wonderful way to build a library of 16 classic books!

We have sourced adapted versions of the stories that cater to the students’ reading skills and yet remain true to the texts. What better way to introduce your child to the rich heritage of literature?

Students are provided with study guides to ensure they develop an understanding of the events and themes of each novel. The Reading Club is truly an enriching experience. Many parents have informed us that it has turned their ‘non-readers’ into ‘avid readers’.

Give your child the gift of a love of reading and a wealth of literature that can carry with them throughout their life. Your Campus Director can provide you with further details.

In the next newsletter I will bring you details of other great BOOSTER PROGRAMS. If you can’t wait until then, see your Campus Director today!

Realis ing Your Potential

Twenty-eight years ago the North Shore Coaching College (the College) was established. The aim at that time was to ensure students were given the opportunity to realise their potential and go on to lead fulfilling lives.

For almost three decades the College has assisted thousands of students to realise their academic potential. Many past students stay in contact and keep us up to date with their careers and lives. The highest ever Selective Schools Test result was achieved by a North Shore student and the most sought after scholarships for Australia’s premier private schools have been awarded to hundreds of our students over the years. We are proud of ALL of our students, both past and present.

For many students, life is a journey that presents additional challenges. Physical, emotional and intellectual disabilities can make it more difficult for them to realise their potential. Opportunities to grow and learn can be harder to access. Nonetheless, they have the same right to a fulfilling, productive and happy life.

Art is often the medium that opens a channel for learning in such circumstances. It can allow for greater social engagement, and develop confidence, life skills and self-esteem for students living with disability. The opportunity to access quality art programs for students with a disability is often a challenge in itself.

Fortunately, the Art Gallery of NSW provides an innovative and exciting learning program entitled ‘Starting with Art’. ‘Starting with Art’ is for Years K-12 students with physical, intellectual, behavioural and sensory disabilities.

By Tony Hanlon, Director of TeachingNorth Shore Coaching College

Each program is led by an artist educator and designed to create a journey of discovery and adventure through the Art Gallery of NSW’s collection.

I am delighted to announce that the North Shore Coaching College is supporting the ‘Starting with Art’ program at the Art Gallery of NSW. The financial assistance provided by the College will ensure that hundreds of additional students will be able to access this program each year.

In the coming weeks we will be announcing some great opportunities for our students and parents to be involved with the Art Gallery of NSW’s array of innovative and exciting educational programs. We will also match any parent donation up to $250 to the ‘Starting with Art’ program. You may contact me on 9415 1860 for details. Your donations of $2 or more to the Art Gallery of NSW are tax deductible.

We at the North Shore Coaching College are excited about the future of education. We are here to support your sons and daughters on their most important journey in life - the journey of learning. All learners should be entitled to realise their potential. Life provides us all with countless opportunities to learn. May we all enjoy our journey of learning.

What are you up to noWadays?

Currently I’m studying a Commerce double degree at the University of Sydney, majoring in Marketing and Psychology. North Shore Coaching College has kindly welcomed me back as a tutor and marketing intern; not only is it an enjoyable and flexible job, but it also allows me to put into practice what I’ve been learning at uni. I’m lucky enough to work with a supportive, tight-knit team, including a wonderful Marketing Manager, and to have the opportunity to explore a variety of different tasks and skills.

What are your tips on hoW to succeed in exams such as the selective schools placement test?

Start early! It’s far better for both your mental wellbeing and academic performance to do, say, 2 hours of preparation a week for 50 weeks instead of 50 hours in the 2 weeks before the exam.

Make sure you approach Selective prep with the right attitude. It shouldn’t be a huge burden, a competitive race or the be-all and end-all; rather, it should be seen as just one indicator (of many) of your effort, an opportunity to enter a top high school, and an objective to work towards. If you’re overexerting yourself, take a step back and a break. Ideally, it’s as much about learning, self-development and enjoyment as much as achieving a good mark.

Finally, of course, come to North Shore Coaching College and do our Selective Written Assessment Test (SWAT)!

does success in primary school translate into success later in life?

Not per se. Real, ongoing success is not something that just happens; it requires hard work and discipline, not just raw talent.

OUR TE

AM!MEET

In fact, you can do very well in life without being anywhere near a genius. Some of you may have seen the memes on Subtle Asian Traits about how people peaked in primary school, when they could do complex mental maths with breakneck speed, but struggled to cope later on when natural intellect just isn’t enough anymore. And though these posts are satirical for the most part, there is an important point underlying this archetypal story: it’s naive, even dangerous, to be complacent about success. Your academic, social, professional, and even romantic life all demand effort and enthusiasm. Without the inherent drive to constantly improve, you will never achieve the best results, and more importantly, you will never be truly fulfilled.

Ultimately, you can never take success for granted, no matter how bright you might be. And success is not an end in itself — if you are curious, open-minded and determined, you will find fulfilment in anything you do, and possibly some excellent results on the side. This love of learning and robust work ethic underpins our work here at North Shore Coaching College, and it is this, not good marks, that is the true measure of success. (I know this was a rather philosophical answer, but I think it’s probably more apt than pretending a good Selective score did or will clear a straightforward path to a 99.95 ATAR and immortality!). there are a lot of coaching naysayers out there, amplified by certain sections of academia and the media. as someWhat of a ‘poster child’ for the coaching industry, What do you say to them?

I must admit that I was not a huge fan of coaching back in primary school. To me, someone who liked to think of himself as ‘smart’, there was no point in spending all this time and money learning more stuff. It’s only now that I appreciate the value of extracurricular tuition. School might seem like more than enough to students, but it is only a quarter of a day, five days a week, for three quarters of the year. There’s certainly room for more learning, especially during these formative years when students’ brains are all brilliant and elastic and growing (thanks Developmental Psych!). And I now realise that tutors aren’t sad, jaded pseudo-intellectuals churning out antisocial, hyper-academic exam robots. We’re educators, deeply passionate about doing the best for their students, and we’re learners too, constantly gaining knowledge, joy and inspiration from those same students. Many of the tutors I know at North Shore are teachers with the same qualifications, experience and drive as ‘normal’ school teachers. So if you ask me, they deserve just as much respect as those teaching classes at your local primary school.

I think those who say that the new Selective test will be the ‘death of the coaching industry’ and the like are fundamentally misunderstanding the purpose of tuition. I can only speak for North Shore, of course, but here we aren’t just teaching kids how to perform in a particular format of a particular exam that a particular group of people may sit.

“We are teaching a love of learning. Intellectual curiosity. The value of

education.”

Whatever you call that fundamental quality that enables us to improve ourselves and the world — that is what we are here for. That is what all my teachers strived to instil within me, within North Shore and without. That is what all of us teachers strive to instil within our students now. And that is always what education will be about — here at North Shore Coaching College no less.

BLACKTOWN north shore campus

Did you know that North Shore Coaching College has over 65 campuses Australia-wide? And growing every year! This month we take a peek into studying at the Blacktown campus and Bankstown campus.

At Bankstown, we want to inspire students to love learning and be excited about North Shore, so we try to make school inviting for everyone. This picture (left) is from Term 3 Week 3. At break time, our students enjoy solving maths problems (good job Phillip and Mohammad!), looking at the new books in our community library and eating some freshly baked cookies.

On the 3rd of August 2019, around 50 students arrived at the Blacktown North Shore campus to complete the REACH Assessments. We were proud to host REACH and other Competitions and Assessments throughout the year. Our campus is open on Saturdays at Blacktown Girls High School. The school has recently undergone renovation to the double-storey building that we are in, so the students were able to take their assessments in one of our large and newly painted classrooms. We pride ourselves on having excellent, experienced teachers and staff helping run our classes every week, and prioritise the students and their learning environment. Our campus has a large area at the front of the building for students to spend their recess breaks in, with basketball hoops and handball courts.
