Headmaster’s Message

Please allow me to extend a warm welcome to all our parents for 2014 – I hope that this will be a prosperous and happy year for all. A special welcome to all our new families! It is indeed an honour to have you

join the Glenwood family and we hope your stay with us will be an extremely pleasant one.

I would like to encourage you as concerned parents, to become part of your child’s journey of growth and discovery, be it in or out of the classroom.

As I mentioned in my initial interview with you, no school can guarantee your child a trouble-free education – there will be bumps in the road ahead and I therefore invite you to make use of our open-door policy and come in and discuss any issues of concern that you may have.

Encourage your child to take part in the many activities on offer at the school. In fact, let them do more than they have to, as experience has taught us that a busy child is a happy child.

I would also like to use this opportunity to congratulate our matric class of 2013 on their exceptional academic results – our 100% matric pass rate remains intact – well done!

The Grade One teachers were excited to welcome a new group of eager and smiling learners on the first day of term. The children appeared ready and able for a “smart start” to their school career. Although most of the children seemed to handle their first morn-ing with confidence, it was evident that some of the parents were struggling to adjust to this new phase of their children’s lives and quite a few wet eyes were observed! The Little Glens seem to find the transition to “big school” a breeze, as they are already familiar with the structure of the school. We would like to take this opportunity of welcoming all the new parents and children to the Glenwood family and hope that you will soon feel at home here. The teachers look forward to a spe-cial year with this lovely bunch of brand new “Glenwoodians.”

College house has five very different students, and the house is situated in Kraaibosch Manor. The hostel father is Mr Oosthuizen and the hostel mother is his wife, Mrs Oosthuizen. We were very

spoiled the first two nights in the hostel with a game of tenpin bowling and a trip to Wakaberry. While the two grade 8s had their “potjiekos” c o m p e t i t i o n , the grade 10s were treated to a movie at the mall. Our chef, Nicky, makes the most amazing food, from roast chicken to pizza. We all enjoy the hostel very much and everyone gets along with one other very well. Mr and Mrs Oosthuizen are always there if we ever need a helping hand with anything, like homework or if we just need someone to talk to. We are all very grateful for everything they do for us.

SOME NEWS FROM OUR STUDENTS OUT THERE IN THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARENA ...

“I am now a second year medical student at Stellenbosch University and I can’t convey enough how much Glenwood has helped me to cope with the academic demands of a rather hectic course. Throughout last year, the work I did was very much science-based and it was very challenging, but I found that the foundation for science and such subjects that had been laid down while I was at Glenwood was crucial for my success during the first year. This foundation included a strong work ethic that was instilled in me right from the beginning of grade 8, supportive teachers that motivated me and the motto that one should always pursue excellence in all areas of life. Those three factors, along with many others, allowed me to do well in my first year and I am confident that they will also help me in the years to come. I’d also like this opportunity to thank Mr van Zyl for his impeccable teaching in science. It’s sad to hear that he has left the Glenwood family, but I know that another teacher was appointed who is equally as great. I really feel like the opportunities presented to me at Glenwood allowed me to become a well-rounded person which is extremely important in the world of university. I am doing well and I am sure that my experience at Glenwood has something to do with it. I look forward to the year ahead and I trust that it is a blessed and prosperous year for the school.”

Nicole Spence - Alumni 2012

“Just completed a BSc Mathematical Sciences (Focus: Mathematics) at Stellenbosch. Graduation on 11th December. Doing honours in mathematics next year.”

Mark Chimes

“Doing medicine at UCT. First year went fine, and I managed to get onto the Dean’s List. Class starts on Monday so I’m back in Cape Town again and excited for 2nd year.”

Tiaan Munro

“I just received my degree from UCT. I studied a BA with a triple major in Drama, English Literature, and Classical Studies. I’ve been accepted into the honours program for English next year but I plan on taking a gap year teaching English in Korea to help cover the costs. After that honours and I hope to do my masters overseas. The long-term plan is to become a career academic and research and lecture.”

Juanita de Villiers

“On the academics front, I recently changed my major to a Bachelor of Science in Finance and I also was admitted to a highly prestigious program called AIM, which stands for Applied Investment Management. The program provides a small group of students with the opportunity to manage $2 Million of the universities’ money in equity funds and to invest in the stock market. My first classes for the program start this coming semester and if successful, I will graduate with a B/S in Finance and an AIM certificate. So a lot of exciting times ahead for me, but a lot of time away from home because I have to do an internship in the States over May, June and July at a large investment firm in either Chicago or New York City. I could never express how grateful I am to Glenwood House for the doors they have opened for me.”

Brandon Cloete

Brandon Cloete is now studying at the University of Marquette and previously studied at Arizona State University. Before Brandon came to Glenwood House he was told to do Mathematical Literacy. At Glenwood we advised him to do Mathematics and Science and he obtained distinctions in both of these subjects at the end of his Grade 12 year (2 out of his 4 distinctions).
