EDITO

Dear former, actual, and future students of the EUREC Master in

Renewable Energy, I have the pleasure to introduce this first issue of the EUREC Master Newsletter.

The EUREC Master was launched in 2002, and has just entered its 9th year, attracting once more a record number of students. Since its

first edition, the EUREC Master has prepared around 300 applicants with the objective to filling the gap between the growing demand

from the private sector for specialised expertise in the field of renewable energy,

and the skills available on the job market. In 2002, seven European universities, from five different European countries,

decided to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to launch a European Master in Renewable Energy, able to provide students with the technical and soft skills requested by a growing European renewable energy industry.

The EUREC Master is structured in three semesters to provide the students not only

with high level technical and scientific competences, but also with so-called soft skills (e.g. flexibility, adaptability, team spirit, ability to work in a multicultural environment...), which are essential when working in an expanding and global

market.

The objective of this EUREC Master Newsletter is to provide former, actual and future students with additional information on the EUREC Master, its universities, the courses, its Alumni, relevant events, as well as to respond to questions and

issues whenever raised by the students. I hope that you will enjoy this first edition!

Kind regards,

Paola Mazzucchelli EUREC (European Renewable Energy Research Centres) Agency E.E.I.G.

NEWS FROM UNIVERSITIES MINES ParisTech CORE

Mines ParisTech Students 2009/2010

The students of the European Master in Renewable Energy registered at MINES

ParisTech are welcomed in the beginning of September at Sophia Antipolis, a

technopole located in the South East of France, on the French Riviera, near Nice.

The education team, also responsible of the daily organization, is made up of Didier

Mayer, Christian Beauger and François Cauneau, assisted by Lyliane Louault, for the

administrative part.

The course starts from September with a series of fundamental lectures in the field

of energy (Electro technical, heat transfers, fluid mechanics, electrical networks,

economics…). They are then organized in different blocks (solar, wind, water power,

and biomass) enriched by conferences and lectures on related themes such as

electricity storage, geothermal, hydrogen, deregulation of electricity markets…

Lab work (4 x 2 days) and one mini-project (100 h), carried up by groups of 2 to 3

people, are completing the educational activities. Several visits on sites are also

organized during the core (Wind Park, concentrated solar technologies, photovoltaic

installations…).

Some time is set aside for the students to participate to international exhibitions on

renewable energy and to attend the presentations of former students‟ professional

thesis, in December in Brussels.

From a logistical point of view, during the stay in Sophia-Antipolis, each student is

provided with a personal desk and computer, all gathered in one room dedicated to

the European Master. A lecture room is also dedicated to the Master.

The student life on the campus of Sophia Antipolis is quite active. Indeed, the

technopole is ideally located, next to the Mediterranean Sea and the seaside resorts

of Antibes and Golfe Juan. The South Alps and the national park of Mercantour are famous hiking sites. This year, the

weather, gentle and dry, has allowed the students to benefit both from the beach

and the mountains.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many students can register each Academic Year?

Each university has its maximum number of students it can admit. In most cases, the groups are

between 8 and 15 students. The maximum number of students which can be enrolled is sixty. For the

academic year 2010-2011, fifty four students have registered.

What will the final qualification be?

The student will be registered at the core provider where (s)he will follow the core section, which

means that the degree will be delivered by this core provider. The name of the qualification awarded is

“European Master in Renewable Energy" in the language of the core provider. In addition to their

diploma from their respective core university, students receive a Certificate of Equivalence from EUREC

Agency. This document formally states that the different degrees given by the four core universities

are equivalent in value and contents. The legal basis for issuing the Certificate of Equivalence is the

Memorandum of Understanding, agreed and signed by all participating universities.

Given that each core university is a public organisation, legally registered and recognised in its own

country, the certificates awarded by the EUREC core universities are fully recognised as postgraduate

degrees both in their respective countries and in the other Member States of the European Union, as

well as EEA countries, and Switzerland. Recognition of this degree in a non-European country depends

on the competent national and regional authorities. EUREC Agency has assisted several students from

non-European countries (e.g. Costa Rica) in having their diploma fully recognised.

ALUMNI NETWORK The genesis of the EUREC Alumni Forum

As Renewable Energies are becoming a leading economic sector, many universities have opened study programmes to satisfy today‟s generation of students‟ growing

demand for cleantech-related topics. So what still gives the EUREC Master its unique added value, now that is has become one among many Masters of Sciences

in Europe, not to say in the world?

The EUREC Master is first and foremost a European Master. Since its creation in

2002, one of the key skills that EUREC students develop during their training is the ability to work in a multicultural, multilingual and multi-background team.

www.master.eurec.be

If this aspect is much appreciated and valued by the students during their education, once they start their career in RE, this amazing sleeping capital seems to

be no longer developed. Yet what a unique opportunity would it be for us students and young professionals to promote a platform where ideas or work opportunities

could be exchanged in a privileged, trusty, sector-specific way!

That is why, together with a small team of motivated alumni, we had the idea to set

up an event that could build-up the EUREC Alumni network and generate a new dynamic for future EUREC classes.

The idea of creating a EUREC Alumni network was not new though: originated by the 2005-2006 students, it was later embodied by the creation of an association

called “Bâtir Durable”: the „08 class started a more project-oriented approach with a website focused on renewable energies and energy efficiency for buildings.

Following these initiatives, a daughter association was created and named “APOGEE”. A website was launched (www.apogee-asso.org) and a group created on the professional social network LinkedIn. [Read article below]

On this basis, it was decided to organize the first Alumni Forum. The yearly thesis Presentations days in Brussels appeared as the best time to have a maximum of

Alumni joining. In coordination with the EUREC Agency Secretary General, who supported the whole logistics, a date was chosen and invitations were sent to more

than 200 EUREC Alumni, students, teachers and administrative officers.

The ambition was not to get a big event organized but to raise an interest and

launch what could hopefully become a tradition of the EUREC Master. Also, as the strength of an Alumni network often provides a tangible long-term added value, we

were convinced that this event could impact very positively the overall reputation and visibility of our Master.

Around 100 responses were received, most of them giving a positive feedback to the initiative but sorry not to join because of the long-distance travels. But we

finally managed to get around 30 participants to the Forum. Based on voluntary presentations, the programme included discussions on RE policies, on the wind energy industry development, on CSP technologies, a case study of a hybrid system

hands-on project, and an entrepreneur‟s experience on his start-up business around spirulina.

The presentations were received with much interest from the participants and opened enthusiastic discussions on the future of the Alumni network. Today,

discussions are still running personally or via LinkedIn on different professional issues, and local meetings start to be planned…Of course the Alumni network still

needs new energies to keep on being developed, but I guess the tradition of the EUREC Master‟s yearly Alumni Forum is now born!

EUREC STORIES: YVAN GUERRA

Yvan Guerra, EUREC Master Student 2006/2007, is now a project officer in

Epuron, Germany and will very soon start as project developer in Conergy,

France. He kindly accepted to answer our questions on his EUREC adventure.

What attracted you to the EUREC Master? During summer 2006, I finalized my engineering studies with an internship in

Regensburg for Siemens VDO. The situation was good because I had an offer to continue working for the automotive industry, nevertheless within me, something was missing, and it was a link between my values and my future work life. Aurélien,

a friend of mine working for the wind industry, recommended me to get information on a Master programme called the EUREC Master in Renewable Energy.

Can you tell us about your experience in Ecole des Mines and Kassel University?

I spent the first semester in Sophia-Antipolis. With my new classmate Camilo, we shared an accommodation in a residence 10 min walk through the forests to the

lecture rooms. There, we were taught the different RE sources and we had opportunities to meet and interact with students from other masters, PhD students, teachers and experts from the industry. On the private side, we enjoyed theatre,

salsa lessons, played soccer and beach volley-ball.

During the second semester at Kassel University, I shared an accommodation with two German girls. The people from the Master were also friendly and, while the cold

weather was blowing outside, we learned the electrical behaviour of the different renewable energy sources. We again met experts, did interesting site visits and met students from other masters. On the private side, it was possible to do indoor

swimming and join the gym right next to the lecture rooms. With classmates we also enjoyed travelling to Berlin and Hamburg.

What about the project? At the end of the second semester, we were all looking for internships and I had

two possibilities: the first one was to do my Master thesis in Germany and the second one, my favourite, to do it in Australia. I quickly received a written

confirmation for the first one and waited until the last minute for the second. Two weeks before the deadline, I participated in the Kassel marathon and such a stimulating experience gave me the patience to keep trying for getting my favourite

choice. Fortunately, just before the deadline it worked!

My thesis was aiming at studying CSP technologies for supplying energy to the off-grid mining operations. Before departing to Sydney, I met the teams in Spain and

Page 10: Issue 1 September 2010

www.master.eurec.be

Germany for gaining technical support. Highly motivated, I discovered a new life style and made use of the lessons learned during the Master, I even got the chance

to work with policy makers and solar experts. During that great experience, my friend and colleague Chris taught me how to surf and I discovered the amazing

Australian fauna and flora. How would you qualify the EUREC Master - which is its added value as

compared to other programmes? The EUREC Master is an excellent way to discover new interesting working fields.

For me its added value comes from the international highly qualified network and classmates.

Based on your experience, would you have some suggestions on how to improve the EUREC Master?

Keep up to date with market situation and evolve with it. Finally, would you like to send a message to the EUREC Master community?

I am glad we can keep in touch like this and thanks again to all who helped me. Since then, I am still working in solar energy and feel lucky to be in harmony with

my values.

WHAT ARE THEY NOW?

Michael Darchambeau, EUREC Master student 2006/2007, followed the

core semester in the University of Zaragoza, Spain and specialised in

hybrid systems in the University of Kassel, Germany. He conducted a

project untitled: “Evolution and Implementation of Small Wind Turbines

and Solar Panels in the Urban Environment of Brussels”.

The Green Link – Urban Mobility Solutions

My name is Michael Darchambeau, I am 29 years old, and I am the co-founder of a new start-up focused on providing innovative solutions for urban mobility in the

express delivery sector. I have received a European Masters in Renewable Energy from EUREC Agency and

hold an MSc in Business Engineering and Economic Development with a focus on technology management from the ICHEC business school in Brussels, Belgium. In

2009, I was awarded an ambassadorial scholarship by the rotary foundation.

Page 11: Issue 1 September 2010

www.master.eurec.be

With two partners, I launched The Green Link in January 2010 and have acted as the Director of Operations for the pilot project in Paris.

Within 9 months we have secured contracts with leading international companies in the express delivery sector and we are now expanding the project on a European level.

Originally from Brussels, I moved to Paris in November 2007 after the EUREC

Master to work for PRTM Management Consultants. The Green Link seeks to provide innovative solutions in the delivery and logistics

sector. In January, we launched a pilot project in Paris to transport and deliver packages within the city centre using zero-emission electronic bikes and cargo

trailers. The Paris operation has been a success and we are now preparing for a European

roll-out, beginning in Lisbon, London and Brussels. Contact
