Wayne County Challenge Match Brings Successful Closure to 2018 and a Great Beginning for 2019!

CORPORATE SUSTAINER SPOTLIGHT:“Working with Cope for outreach and to support environmental education is a great way to extend our corporate goals for sustainable manufacturing outside of our plant walls.” - Sherrilyn Johnson, Plant Manager of Hill's Pet Nutrition

In 2018, the Wayne County Foundation and our community raised money to support 54 local charities. Our community raised more than $1.63 million dollars for its nonprofits. Cope Environmental Center is lucky to be situated in a community that cares so deeply for its organizations and environmental sustainability. CEC exceeded its $10,000 match goal and received more than $49,000. Thank you! We are so appreciative of your continued support. Together we can make the world a better place!

The CEC staff (above) and board are honored to be a part of such a wonderful community. Thank you! 2019 is going to be a great year! (Photo credit: Scarlet Shots Photography)

What does it mean to be a corporate sponsor? The support we receive from local businesses and organizations enables us to achieve incredible milestones. Corporate sponsors have helped us expand our environmental education programming, attempt the first Certified Living Building Challenge project in Indiana, and celebrate 27 years of promoting sustainable lifestyles in Wayne County and beyond.

We owe all of our sponsors a huge thank you!

While monetary donations are a constant need, the help from volunteers is an absolute necessity to see CEC fulfill our goals. If your company is interested in a corporate volunteer day, contact us at (765) 855–3188 or through our website at copeenvironmental.org!

I love new hats and I am excited to be wearing a new one at Cope Environmental Center. I wore my first signature logo Cope hat when I started in 2002 as a volunteer and have continued to wear many through the years. Since that time, Cope has seen a lot of growth, overgrowth, pruning, and more growth! But like our forest, CEC just keeps maturing and becoming more beautiful with time.

New growth to watch for and be a part of in 2019 includes the completion of the Living Building Challenge (LBC) project, new trails in the Children of Indiana Nature Park designed to meet the standards of the American Disabilities Act, hosting the Family Earth Day celebration this April and, as previously highlighted, hosting Jack Hanna's Going Wild for Wildlife!

Join us in our enthusiasm for these events and other new dreams and goals! I personally look forward to the spring fun coming soon, time in the garden, and the many great programs we have designed for area schoolchildren, families, and volunteers.

Thank you for the opportunity to wear this “new” hat. I am privileged to be the Executive Director of such a great organization and oversee the continuation of Jim and Helen Cope’s legacy of environmental learning and innovative

Stephanie McCurdy and Amanda Jetmore!

The CEC Community

Meet CEC's New Staff Members!

Director's Notes: From Under the Brim

"Let's Celebrate Earth Day every day!"

CEC is excited to introduce two new staff members, Stephanie McCurdy as our Program and Volunteer Coordinator and Amanda Jetmore as our Accountant.

Stephanie McCurdy holds a Bachelor Degree in Natural Resources from Purdue University and has 20 years of experience working in the non-profit sector of Wayne County. She brings to CEC a wealth of knowledge in programming, outreach, fundraising, and event planning. She also has a lifelong love of the woods, is passionate about frogs and other herps, and enjoys sharing her knowledge with people from many different backgrounds.

Stephanie is certified in Project Learning Tree, Project WET, Project Wild/Aquatic, Go FishIN, and is a Master Gardener. She is active with the Indiana Envirothon Competition and happily volunteers her time supporting the various activities of her sidekicks, James and Morgan.

Amanda Jetmore holds a Bachelor Degree in Accounting from the University of Evansville. Before joining CEC staff she worked as a contract bookkeeper for CEC for five years. We also share her with the Wayne County Historical Museum and First English Lutheran Church.

Amanda first came to CEC because she was inspired by Marianne Cope, who was the kindergarten teacher for both of her daughters. Amanda admired the values that Marianne instilled in her children and has continued to share and encourage the love of nature and the outdoors with them at CEC ever since. Her daughters have attended CEC’s camps since they were five years old and now they both are Junior Rangers, special volunteers who help lead the Summer Adventure Camps.

Amanda’s favorite outdoor activity is running. She has completed 10 half marathons to date and plans to complete one every month for the next year! Amanda also enjoys sewing, knitting, and gardening.

Please join us in welcoming Stephanie and Amanda!

Welcome aboard!

I hope to see you soon!
