WelcomeA message from Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke MBE

As we enter a new academic year we take this opportunity to look back on the success stories from Hull College Group, and celebrate the events and news that took place in the run up to, and during our summer break.

The summer break has seen a significant change to our estate. Goole College benefited from the expansion of their Carpentry & Joinery Workshops, and upon opening, the new facility was oversubscribed, leading to the creation of duplicate programmes to meet demand.

Harrogate College opened their new £6m campus redevelopment, HCUK Training successfully relocated to the KCOM Stadium and the Creative Arts provision previously based at Park Street made the transition over to our Queens Gardens site, with the creation of our new facility, HU1 Visual Arts Studios.

We were delighted to announce the results of our Higher Education Review in August. Carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency the report confirmed that our Higher Education programmes are delivered to an impressively high standard with the standard of our students experience receiving a commendation.

Another recent development saw our Employability Skills Passport become the first scheme of its kind to be validated by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). This accolade underlined the Group’s excellent reputation with employers which was highlighted in our November 2015 Ofsted inspection.

There have been many more wonderful student success stories including some of our students being selected for the penultimate stage of WorldSkills by joining SquadUK, our 14-16 College students becoming published writers in a recent short story book and Ceramics student Abbie Nason designing and making the trophy for the AoC Gold Awards. In addition our students at Hull and Harrogate College saw great success at the Bridal Buyers awards, which saw Harrogate student Berenice Gilmore take first place in the ‘Best Student Designer’ award, and a further 4 Hull students named as among the 6 finalists.

This new academic year will bring lots of further changes and opportunities for the Group as we prepare for the introduction of the apprenticeship levy and commence our strategic area review in October with all colleges in the region.

Previously known as Charlottes, the popular restaurant underwent an impressive re-brand and refurbishment, but the fantastic food and training

still remains.

Work on the refurbishment began at the start of 2016, updating the 10 year old restaurant and bringing the facilities back up to date and ensuring everything is to industry standard.

Situated in the Horncastle Building on Hull College’s Queens Gardens site, the meals at HU1 Riverside are prepared, cooked and served by aspiring catering and hospitality students in a relaxed and sophisticated setting, offering a high standard of silver service as well as delicious food.

Marking the occasion was guest speaker Michelin star chef James Mackenzie owner of The Pipe & Glass, South Dalton. James is currently working in partnership with Hull College to provide ‘the Yorkshire Chefs Certificate’, which was also officially launched at the event. The project offers current Hull College Catering students the once in a lifetime opportunity of work placements within Michelin star restaurants and the chance to learn side by side with the Chefs themselves, including James Mackenzie at The Pipe & Glass.

James Mackenzie said, "This is an exciting opportunity for all the students involved, and hopefully the certificate can continue to develop in recognition over the coming years”.

“It’s always a pleasure to see a College recognising the value of, and investing in a restaurant for students. The refurbishment of HU1 Riverside creates a brilliant opportunity for the students to gain experience in a more realistic environment.”

Speaking about the rebrand, Nicola Allison, Head of the School of Customer Service, Business and Leisure said, “We just felt that the restaurant had become tired and not up to date with industry standards since its opening 10 years ago. We felt it was no longer reflective of what we are about as a Hospitality and Catering School and wanted to revitalise it to create a fresh, energetic, zesty environment for our students to train in that makes a statement about the School but also that prepares our students to be work ready.”

“We want our students to have pride in the restaurant and raise their expectations to achieve the best they can.”

The restaurant can cater for up to 80 guests for a sit-down meal or a buffet and special events and functions can be booked through the Hull College website, but diners are advised to book early as nights become fully booked on a weekly basis.

Hull College launches new restaurantHU1 Riverside looks set to become Hull’s newest, premier training restaurant, and was celebrated with an official launch event on Monday 25 April 2016.

It’s the start of a new era for Harrogate College following a £6m campus redevelopment that has seen brand new industry standard facilities opening for the start of September 2016.

The project, part funded by the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership has brought facilities

for an expansion of new and current curriculum areas as part of the LEP’s aim to strengthen local economies.

Principal of Harrogate College, Debra Forsythe-Conroy said: “This redevelopment represents the start of a new era for the

College, one that aspires to match the stature and reputation for quality in the town of Harrogate.

The investment supports our commitment to securing increased employment opportunities in the area and enhancing our ability to develop career packages which include a curriculum which meets local priorities, supports the visitor economy, heritage crafts, and cultural and business economies.”

New and returning students in September have been the first to access the £6m redeveloped campus and will enjoy the

College’s enhanced curriculum areas that mirror industry standards, such as the Bistro on the Park training restaurant and the Image Academy Hair and Beauty salons.

The Technology Centre has provided a home for the motor vehicle, electrical, welding and joinery workshops, in a purpose built environment that allows students access to top of the range equipment, such as electrical installation booths sponsored by Dunnington Electricals and joinery equipment sponsored by Howdens Joinery.

The front of the main building

has been transformed into the ‘high street’ where the training restaurant, hair salon and HG2 Café are all open to the public in order for students to gain valuable experience of working in a ‘real life’ placement.

The next phase of the Harrogate College investment programme will include a multi-use 3G pitch for student and community use, an expanded curriculum and new IT infrastructure to improve the learning experience of current and future students and allow the College to offer state of the art distance learning courses.

Park Street on the Move

Across the summer break of 2016, extensive work began to relocate the Creative Arts provision from the Park Street site over to the Queens Gardens and High Street sites as part of the Group’s estate strategy.

To mark this new chapter, the relocated Art and Design area now carries the name HU1 Visual Arts Studios and this creates a unique creative hub based in the centre of Hull and at the heart of the UK City of Culture in 2017.

Harrogate MP grilled by local students in the House of CommonsIn April, Harrogate and Knaresborough MP, Andrew Jones MP met Public Service students in the House of Commons to face an hour of questions in one of Parliament’s famous Select Committee Rooms.

The pupils from Harrogate College received a guided tour of the Commons and Lords before being meeting Mr Jones in the Chamber of the House. Later in Committee Room 5, Mr Jones faced questions on a variety of subjects but most had a strong European element to them, as the referendum was a topical subject at the time of the visit.

Mr Jones commented: “I host a lot of school visits to Parliament and these visits help make what Parliament does more tangible and real to students. They also enable them to see the work that goes on behind the scenes which rarely makes the evening news bulletins.”

Mr Jones also showed the students the Palace of Westminster’s roof garden and its spectacular views over London.

Helen Garnham, Public Service course tutor said, “Our Public Service students had an extremely enjoyable and informative day at the House of

Commons and Andrew Jones MP has really given them something to think about, particularly around the EU Referendum as some of the students may now have changed their viewpoints. It was a very long day but well worth it and we all enjoyed the rare opportunity to enjoy the views from the rooftop.”

Goole College Carpentry and Joinery Workshop nearing completion

Planned and developed in partnership with the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), who jointly funded the project, the workshop has been designed to deliver a provision that provides the vital skills needed by local businesses which will enhance the local skill set within the community.

Upon completion, the new extension to the existing welding workshop measures 15m x 15m and is able accommodate a large number of Carpentry and Joinery students allowing them to learn their trade on the newly installed machines.

The new workshop provides students with the opportunity to study Site/Bench Joinery

at Levels 1 & 2. These new programmes complement the existing Fabrication and Welding, Engineering and Manufacturing and MIG/TIG/MMA/Arc Welding courses.

With the recent addition of the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) test centre at Goole College, students can now gain the full package needed to progress to employment including the qualification, their CSCS Card and the all of the employability extras that comes with this.

Caron Wright, Principal of Goole College said, “We’re delighted that Goole College has this excellent opportunity and investment for the region in

terms of carpentry and joinery provision. We have had substantial investment from the LEP who have jointly funded the project in anticipation of supporting local business needs. The new workshop has been constructed throughout the year and building contractors made excellent progress in a short time, to ensure that everything was completed for September. “

“This development is very exciting and important not only to prospective students but also the local community and gives the college the opportunity to deliver curriculum that meets the needs of local employers. It provides excellent facilities for people to either upskill or train for careers in carpentry and joinery.”

Early in 2016, work began on the construction of a new, state of the art carpentry and joinery workshop at Goole College and the work is almost complete, ready for the new academic year in September.

Shadow Secretary Fact Finding with HCUK TrainingHCUK Training’s newly relocated Employment Services recently received a special visit, opening its doors to the Shadow Secretary for Works and Pensions, Debbie Abrahams.

HCUK Training Employment Services on the moveHCUK Training marked the relocation of their Employment Services division to the KCOM Stadium with a special breakfast networking event.

As part of Hull College Group, HCUK Training Employment Services was previously located within the Queens Gardens tower block providing a range of training and support for the unemployed including Basic IT Training, ESOL Training, CSCS Card Training, Food Safety, First Aid, CV Writing, Vocational Training in Customer Service, Retail, Hospitality, Health and Social Care, and Business Administration.

Moving to the Learning Zone 2 at the stadium, the team will continue to provide training to learners, in a newly refurbished environment providing facilities such as two dedicated IT suites,

interactive technology, and a drop-in Job Search and Support facility all within the secure and easily accessible location of this prominent Hull landmark.

To launch this new facility, key stakeholders were invited to a breakfast event for a guided tour of the new facilities and a chance to network with other major partners in the area.

Guests were welcomed by Director of External Funding, Dan Howard who also provided an overview of HCUK Training’s achievements, which was followed by Operational Manager Steve Steel, who

Being situated at such a famous landmark certainly puts us on the map. The new facilities are bright and modern and allow us to deliver training and qualifications to our learners in a dedicated space that we are all extremely proud of.”

Debbie Abrahams, MP, has recently been carrying out a fact finding visit, establishing vital information about employability skills and support in the regional area, and one of the stops was The Learning Zone at Hull’s KC Stadium.

to hear how HCUK Training are working in partnership with learners, businesses and Job Centre Plus in the Hull and Humber region.”

“The less traditional environment at the KCOM Stadium also helps removes barriers to learning for some people.

“I’ve been very impressed with the success and turnaround here, delivery of tailor made courses, and also with the very responsive approach of the staff.”

In May, a group of BA (Hons) Music Performance and Production students from Hull College embarked on the trip of a lifetime.

As part of their final year, the students take the annual pilgrimage to the birthplace of Elvis and Soul to share their musical talent and knowledge with students from the STAX Academy.

Born from the legendary STAX Records, widely credited with the creation of Soul music, the STAX Academy was created to inspire young people and enhance their academic, cognitive, performance, and leadership skills, and a joint learning programme has been created for the duration of the trip.

Now in its sixth year, the trip offers the students the opportunity to put their skills to use, experience travel and see first-hand the inner workings of the music industry.

Running up to this incredible experience, the students worked incredibly hard, preparing for a recording session in the very same studio that gave the world Elvis, SUN STUDIOS!

Add to this a visit to Graceland and an Al Green concert and this was a Music Students dream come true.

Chris Jordan BA (Hons) Music Performance student said “I think it’s incredibly important that these trips take place for the students and the college, especially as ambassadors for Hull in the run up to 2017. Working

with the youngsters at the STAX Academy and showing them what we can do was great, and we learned lots in return.”

“The chance to record in the legendary Sun studios was a chance in a lifetime, and there is no way I would ever have got there if it wasn’t for studying at Hull College”

Craig Steer, Hull College Tutor said, “The collaboration with Stax Music Academy is a unique relationship we have developed over the past seven years. For

staff and students alike it is an opportunity of a lifetime to work with musicians from all over America, teaching the next generation of performers about the value of Memphis’ rich music heritage.”

“The students selected for these trips are our ambassadors and have exceled in their prospective degrees; this is the best way to celebrate their achievement and create lifelong links with one of the best education establishments in the world.”

Goole company donates generous gift of fitted KitchenLocal company Howdens Joinery recently donated a fully equipped kitchen to assist students at Goole College.

The kitchen is used by the Supported Learning students and they use the top of the range appliances to develop independent living skills.

Students and staff gathered to officially open the kitchen and were joined by Sash Hanratty, Technical Manager from Howdens Joinery, who had the honour of cutting the ribbon.

Sash Hanratty said “We are really honoured that we’ve made a difference to the community, and that we are able to help the supported learners and helping them improve their life skills and gain new skills.”

Caron Wright, Principal of Goole College said, “The partnership with Howdens is really important and this is an example of what we can achieve by working with local businesses to support the college and support our students, particularly to developing independent living skills. Without their support we would not have this kitchen“.

“Delivering excellence by working with local businesses is my vision for the college, and this partnership with Howdens is still in its early stages so it is important to ensure that we develop this to provide more training support to our students.”

Business Admin students raise impressive funds for charityLevel 3 Business Admin students from Hull College took part in charity fundraising events which saw them collect over £3,000 for two worthy and important causes.

The students worked together to design, collect and produce a number of prize hampers, raising funds for The British Heart Foundation.

These were filled with gifts and cosmetic products for tailored to cater for males and females as well as generic mixed selection. These were then rolled out in an internal raffle, which saw the students travel the college site selling as many as they could. Their work paid off, and just through raffle tickets alone they raised over £200.

Jane Mooney from the British Heart Foundation was invited in to the college to enjoy a celebration party with the students and receive the cheque.

As well as this they also assisted in raising funds for The Macmillan Cancer Support Charity.

Working with Degree students, they created a further large hamper which they used in conjunction with the fundraising event held in St Stephens Shopping Centre in Hull. All together they raised an amazing £3,000 by running tombola’s and various raffles. The event also had great entertainment and a very special appearance from local boxing here Tommy Coyle.

The students all worked incredibly hard selling tickets and working with the public for the event and are rightly very proud of the incredible funds raised.

Johnstones (PPG) Painting & Decorating AwardsIn April, two 2nd year apprentices from Hull College competed in the regional heats of the Johnstones Painting & Decorating awards.

Liam Taylor and Lewis Fagan both work for Hull based companies as apprentices, and by displaying the skills developed through their learning, they both demonstrated how they are an asset to their employers.

The competition began with a 9.30am briefing for the nine competitors, who were also students from the Yorkshire region. Work then began until lunch, which gave the tutors

an opportunity to catch up on how well their students were progressing.

At this stage, both of the Hull students were working exceptionally well, with Liam taking the lead.

The contest was a close call and when the results were announced, Liam ranked at 2nd place.

Both Hull College apprentices worked well throughout and they both enjoyed the competition and the fantastic goodie bag they received for taking part.

Goole College held their annual Hair and Beauty showcase in May.

The event was held in the common room and the planning had started way back in November 2015! The showcase was based around the themes of Vintage, Horror, Avant Garde and Prom, and the decision was made that this would show off the skills of

many different levels.

Students taking part came from Level 2 apprentices and Level 2 & 3 Hairdressing.

The event was judged by a panel made up of last year’s student of the year and best overall winner, with prizes up for grabs for ‘Best Apprentice’, ‘Best in Level 2 & 3’ and ‘Best overall Winner’ The

judges commented that the standard from all students was incredibly high and the job of choosing winners was not an easy one.

With great support from students, staff, friends and family, the event was a huge success and a great night, creating a real buzz within the salon.

Hull College hosts WorldSkills Catering Heat

Harrogate Business students studying in their second year were given the opportunity to have their business plans reviewed by local businessman, Nigel Dakin.

The Enterprise Gateway manager of Harrogate Borough Council visited the students at the beginning of the year to offer advice and guidance on

how to write their own business plans as part of their ‘Starting a Small Business’ module. Over the course of this unit, the students needed to decide on a small business that they would like to set up and then produce a full business proposal for this.

Before they could present their business plan to a bank manager it needed to be discussed with

a business mentor, so Nigel returned to check on their progress and offered constructive criticism where needed. Carol Garland, the students’ course tutor said: “The students all found the process very interesting and helpful to gain valuable advice from an established businessman such as Nigel. Thank you to Nigel for offering his help and time to our students.”

Hull College Group has a long history with WorldSkills competition, and it’s not limited to our students winning their heats!

In May 2016, Hull College hosted one of the catering heats for WorldSkills, bringing together students from around the UK to test their skills.

Here you can see the start

of one the many challenges, which tasked the Chefs to create a unique dish from a surprise box of ingredients.

The School of Hair, Beauty & Catering celebrated even more competition success as Beauty Therapy student Emma Mitchell achieved 1st place in the regional heats of World Skills at Birmingham NEC. The competition included a facial treatment, make up and nail art. The judge of the competition

shared that it had been a very high scoring heat. We are hopeful Emma will represent Hull College competing at the final of World Skills in November. Her tutor, Kerry Wray said “I am very proud of Emma. She has worked hard to achieve this level of skill and really deserves this.”

Hull College thanks employers for work experience with dinner eventOn Monday 6 June, a dinner event was held to say a special thank you to the many local employers who provide valuable work experience to our students. Employers were invited into the Hull College training restaurant, HU1 Riverside, where they were waited on by students from the School of Catering. Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke addressed the diners, outlining why their contribution is a vital part of our student’s progression, and several students reported on what they had gained from their work experience. Work experience is an important aspect of helping students to develop their employability skills, which is one of the Group’s priorities, and at the time of the thank you dinner, 2339 students had completed 30 hours’ work experience with over 600 different local and national employers.

Since 2014, every 16 to 18 year old on a full time study programme has been required

to complete mandatory work experience as part of their qualification and Hull College Group has worked closely with employers locally to provide students with real live experience of work. Employers providing work experience range from local companies such as Probe (Hull) Limited, to national and international organisations, such as the NHS, BMW and Siemens. All students who successfully complete work experience can use what they have learned on placement to contribute

towards achieving their Hull College Group Employability Skills Passport and Seal, which has been developed in partnership with the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership. Hull College Group is the first providers in the region to achieve LEP validation for their passport.

College student chosen to design national award

On 14 June, students, tutors and a host of special guests gathered at Goole College to celebrate the 2015/16 academic year with the annual FE Awards.

The evening was opened by Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke, who, acting as Master of Ceremonies, welcomed the guests and introduced a visual photographic review of the year’s activities.

The film was followed by an address from Principal of Goole College Caron Wright, and the presentation of the Gold Awards by special guest Tom Morrison of Rollits.

The evening then progressed on to the awards of achievement and a selection of awards sponsored by key local employers and partners including Drax, BMW and The Goole Times.

As always, the annual FE Award Ceremony was a great event and a perfect way to close the year, recognising the achievements, success and hard work of all our students.

We want to thank everyone for making the night another memorable event and we wish you all well in whatever route you choose next.

Here is a small selection of pictures from the event and pictures of all of the winners can be found on the Goole College Facebook page.

A design by a student from Hull College was chosen as the 2016 Association of Colleges Gold Award.

Abbie Nason, 18, created the sculpture from ceramic and glass designed to represent achievement and final goals. The AoC ran a competition for students to design the award trophy, which Abbie chose to enter and eventually won.

The AoC Charitable Trust presents the Gold Awards to a select number of famous former college student alumni each year in recognition of the vital role further education has played in their careers and continuing achievements. Past winners include Dragons’ Den investor and successful entrepreneur

Deborah Meaden, Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle, actors Colin Firth and Idris Elba, and TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh.

Abbie said: “My ideas are developed from success and achievement. The slope on the base represents a climb, the building shapes are both stepping stones and the seats of learning which colleges represent. The glass sphere at the top represents achievement and final goals.”

Graham Towse, Principal at Hull College, said: “We are so proud of Abbie, her passion and commitment for her art and her studies. Abbie’s learning journey at Hull College epitomises what we do in Colleges across the country, supporting people to

achieve their potential. To enter this prestigious competition says a lot about Abbie’s confidence in her ability as an artist and to be selected as the winner is a huge accolade for Abbie and for her tutors who work extremely hard developing our students.”

Martin Doel, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges, said: “The design of these awards demonstrates the quality of work that college students attain and once again it was a tough decision in choosing who would design the Gold Award trophy. It is important to celebrate the work of students publicly, and I have no doubt that Abbie will take the skills she learned at college and go on to have a fantastic career in her chosen field.”

On Thursday 9 June, the Lord Mayor of Hull, CLLR Sean Chaytor paid the Hull College Horticulture Centre a visit to see some very important saplings.

The centre, in the Preston Road area of Hull, was honoured to be chosen as the recipient of a special batch of Ginkgo Tree seeds, originated from a batch of six trees that survived the blast of the A-Bomb dropped on

Hiroshima in 1945.

Following the aftermath of the bombing, these trees began to sprout, giving hope to the survivors and leading them to being dubbed the “Bearer of Hope”.

These seeds have been successfully germinated at the centre and will be planted in 2017 as part of the celebrations for the UK City of Culture.

Hairdressing competition success For School of Hair, Beauty and Catering

The school of Hair, Beauty and Catering celebrated as Level 2 Hairdressing student Michelle Richardson was selected to go through from the first heat of

World skills with her creation.

The strict competition rules meant that the restyle and colour needed to be carried out on a block head and the competition entry was by photograph only.

Denise Broughton, Michelle’s tutor said ‘ I am very proud of Michelle and the work she has put into this, it’s not easy putting yourself forward to take part in a national competition but we are delighted with the result!’

The Hull School of Art & Design has proved once again that the standard of its provision is among the best in the UK by gaining the prestigious accolade of a national accreditation.

The BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media course was successful in achieving accreditation from the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), making it the only mixed HE / FE College in the UK to achieve the award.

Primarily focused on accrediting Journalism courses within Higher Education, the BJTC Council Members are respected and experienced industry professionals, with impressive links to organisations such as the BBC, ITV, ITN, Sky News, and Channel 4 among many others.

The BJTC accreditation is highly valued throughout the journalism and media industry, as well as the higher education sector, representing the very highest level of industry based training for multi-platform journalism. Students who graduate from accredited courses can clearly demonstrate they are ready to enter into employment and are trained to the very best standards.

The accreditation process was carried out across 2 years, with visits, discussions and assessments from the BJTC, working alongside HSAD to tighten the current course and drive focus towards the skills criteria determined by employers and the council. The connection to the council means ongoing support and visits to continuously improve and grow

the provision.

Programme Leader and Associate Dean Jackie Goodman said, “I’m delighted that the BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media degree at Hull School of Art and Design has received accreditation by the BJTC. The is the result of a two-year process of advisory visits, which have helped us to make sure our students are getting high quality training in all aspects of online and multimedia journalism. I am especially pleased that we are the only college-based journalism course to have achieved BJTC accreditation, which enables us to stand alongside many of the longer-established university courses as a centre of excellence for journalism training. “

Business lecturer attends Entrepreneurial Ecosystems research workshop in Turkey

Alex Alterskye from the Faculty of Business and Science at Hull College attended a week long research workshop on Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (EE) held at Ege University in Izmir, Turkey, a trip that was part funded by Hull College.

Alex is currently studying for his PhD and is investigating regional entrepreneurship. The workshop was a Newton fund collaboration, between Ege

University, Strathclyde University and the British Research Council, and its aim was to get early career researchers engaged in research around entrepreneurial context.

Local entrepreneurs were interviewed, government and council officials presented the help that is available for entrepreneurship in the region and there was a visit to a Technology and Innovation park.

Researchers from the UK and Turkey formed working groups - these collaborations will prove to be extremely useful in expanding knowledge on EE with a number of research proposals and proposed papers resulting from the workshop.

The workshop concluded with a visit to the ancient city of Ephesus, and an investigation of the entrepreneurial past of that region of Turkey.

Hull College Group degree provision receives High Quality MarkIn August, The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), the UK’s independent assessor of quality and standards for university-level degrees, reported on their review of Hull College Group’s Higher Education programmes.

The QAA reviewed Hull College Group’s degree programmes available at Hull and Harrogate College, and the results showed these were delivered to a very high standard and awarded a commendation for the high quality of student experience, as well as noting four areas where the Group’s provision represented best practice in the provision of university degrees. There were no areas where improvements were required to meet the QAA’s standards.

“Commended” is the highest standard of judgement the QAA can award and rarely given, even to the UK’s very best universities.

This most recent commendation for the support given to Hull College Group students follows Ofsted’s December 2015 report, which highlighted how the innovative partnership between the institution and its students provides excellent learning opportunities.

The Group’s degree programmes were also seen as representing best practice nationally in the areas including:

•thestrongworkingrelationshipsbetweenstaffandstudents to provide a positive learning experience

•theresearchandscholarlyactivitycarriedoutbystaff to enhance teaching

•therangeofopportunities, locallyandnationally, made available to students to increase their employability

•arobustqualitymanagementsystemtoidentifyareas for further improvement in the student experience.

The Higher Education Review by QAA follows the Group’s achievement of Foundation Degree Awarding Powers in January 2016, which led to Hull College Group becoming only the 5th College in the UK to be granted degree awarding powers.

Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke said, “To receive a report with a commendation for enhancement and no recommendations for improvement is an outstanding report exceeding many of our very best universities. This result is a further endorsement of the quality of our higher education, building on the excellent achievement of our Foundation Degree Awarding Powers earlier in the year and the very positive feedback received following our recent validations from the Open University.”
